환경교육에 대한 유아 어머니의 이해와 경험

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 유아 어머니의 환경교육에 대한 이해와 가정에서 실천하고 있는 환경교육의 실제 및 실천 과정에서 느끼는 어려움과 요구는 무엇인지를 탐색함으로써, 가정에서의 환경교육 실천에 필요한 기초자료를 제공하는 데 있다. 이러한 연구목적에 따라 설정한 연구문제는 다음과 같다.

첫째, 유아 어머니의 환경교육에 대한 이해는 어떠한가? 둘째, 유아 어머니의 가정 내 환경교육 실천 경험은 어떠한가? 셋째, 유아 어머니의 가정 내 환경교육 실천 과정에서 가지는 어려움과 요구는 어떠한가?

본 연구 참여자는 유아기 자녀를 둔 유아 어머니 10명이며, 2023년 6월 17일부터 8월 26일까지 연구 참여자별로 각각 2회씩 총 20회의 심층면담을 실시하여 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 반복해서 읽으며 전체적인 맥락을 파악하고 연구 목적에 부합하는 내용 안에서 공통적으로 언급하는 주제나 단어를 찾은 후, 해당 내용들 간의 연결고리를 찾아 범주화하여 분석하였다. 또한 연구의 정확성과 신뢰성을 확보하기 위하여 동료 연구자, 연구 참여자, 유아교육전문가에 의한 검토 과정을 거치며 지속적인 수정 및 보완을 통해 방법적, 해석적, 절차적 오류를 줄이고자 하였다.

본 연구의 결과를 연구문제에 따라 정리하면 다음과 같다.

첫째, 유아 어머니들의 환경교육에 대한 이해가 어떠한지 살펴본 결과, 유아 어머니들은 미래를 위해 필요한 교육으로 환경교육을 이해하고 있었다. 즉, 유아들이 현재보다 환경적으로 더 나은 미래에서 건강하게 살아가기 위해 환경교육이 필요하다고 생각하였다. 또한 어머니들은 환경교육을 생활습관 형성에 필요한 교육의 하나로 이해하고 있었는데, 이를 위해 가정에서 어머니는 친환경적인 생활로 유아에게 긍정적인 모델링이 되어야 한다고 하였다. 그리고 유아 어머니들은 환경교육은 행동에 따른 결과를 자세하게 알려주고 직접적인 경험을 통해 환경문제의 원리와 흐름에 대해 파악할 수 있도록 하는 교육으로 이해하였다. 둘째, 유아 어머니들의 가정 내 환경교육에 대한 실천 경험을 분석한 결과, 가정에서 주도적으로 실천하는 환경교육과 유아교육기관과 연계하여 실천하는 환경교육으로 나타났다. 먼저 유아 어머니들은 일상생활 속에서 의도적으로 유아들에게 친환경 행동을 수행하며 모범이 되어주고 유아들이 환경에 바람직하지 않은 행동을 할 때 적절하게 안내해주면서 일상에서 환경을 보호하는 태도와 행동이 길러질 수 있도록 자연스럽게 실천하고 있었다. 또한 환경 그림책이나 환경 관련 다큐멘터리 등의 다양한 매체를 활용하여 유아와 상호작용하였으며, 환경과 관련된 다양한 행사에 참여하여 직접 체험할 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 방법으로 환경교육을 실천하였다. 어머니들은 유아들이 유아교육기관에서 실시한 환경과 관련된 다양한 놀이 및 활동을 가정에서도 지속적으로 즐길 수 있도록 여건을 조성해주고 기관에서의 환경교육 내용과 관련된 실물 자료나 영상 및 서적을 제공해 환경에 대한 관심이 확장될 수 있도록 지원하였다. 또한 기관에서 제공되는 환경 관련 연계활동에 적극적으로 참여하면서 유아에게 지속적으로 환경에 대해 안내하고 행동을 유도하며 환경에 대한 올바른 인식이 고취될 수 있도록 노력하였다. 더불어 유아 어머니들은 유아들이 유아교육기관에서의 환경교육 경험을 떠올려 가정에서도 유아가 주도적으로 행동하도록 안내하면서 자연스럽게 환경교육을 실천하였다. 셋째, 유아 어머니들의 가정 내 환경교육에 대한 실천 과정에서 경험하는 어려움이 어떠한지 살펴본 결과, 환경에 대한 문제를 인식하고 환경교육의 필요성을 인지하고 있었지만 현실적으로 시간적 여유가 부족하며 환경문제로 인해 겪는 직접적인 피해가 없어 실천 의지가 약화되는 데서 실행 어려움을 느끼고 있었다. 환경에 대한 유아의 낮은 관심과 흥미 또한 환경교육 실천을 어렵게 만들었다. 이에 유아 어머니들은 지속적인 환경교육의 실천을 위해 유아의 흥미를 유발할 수 있는 캐릭터를 활용한 영상이나 재미있는 노래 등의 매체와 환경교육을 보다 쉽고 부담없이 실천할 수 있는 환경 지식과 환경교육의 방법 및 정보 등이 수록된 지침서와 같은 자료들이 제공되기를 요구하였다. 그리고 유아교육기관에서 가족 모두가 함께 수행할 수 있는 실천 중심의 연계활동, 환경 관련 행사나 캠페인을 통한 환경교육의 중요성 홍보 및 사회적 분위기 조성이 필요하다고 하였다.|The purpose of this study is to provide basic data necessary for environmental education at home by exploring the understanding of early childhood mothers' environmental education and the difficulties and demands felt in the actual and practical process of environmental education practiced at home. The research questions set according to these research objectives are as follows.

First, what is the understanding of early childhood mothers' environmental education? Second, what is the experience of early childhood mothers in practicing environmental education at home? Third, what are the difficulties and demands of infants' mothers in the process of practicing environmental education at home? The participants in this study were 10 mothers of infants with early childhood children, and data were collected by conducting a total of 20 in-depth interviews twice for each study participant from June 17 to August 26, 2023. The collected data were repeatedly read, the overall context was grasped, a common topic or word was found within the content that met the research purpose, and the link between the contents was found and categorized and analyzed. In addition, in order to secure the accuracy and reliability of the study, we tried to reduce methodological, interpretive, and procedural errors through a review process by fellow researchers, research participants, and early childhood education experts through continuous correction and supplementation.

The results of this study are summarized according to the research questions as follows.

First, as a result of examining the understanding of early childhood mothers' environmental education, early childhood mothers were understanding environmental education as an education necessary for the future. In other words, it was thought that environmental education was necessary for infants to live healthy in an environmentally better future than the present. In addition, mothers understood environmental education as one of the necessary education to form lifestyle habits, and for this, mothers at home should model positively for infants with an eco-friendly life. In addition, early childhood mothers understood environmental education as education that provides detailed information on the consequences of actions and allows them to grasp the principles and flows of environmental problems through direct experience. Second, as a result of analyzing early childhood mothers' practical experiences in environmental education at home, it was found that environmental education led by families and environmental education practiced in connection with early childhood education institutions. First of all, infants' mothers were intentionally performing eco-friendly actions in their daily lives, setting an example, and properly guiding infants when they acted unfavorable to the environment, so that they could naturally develop attitudes and behaviors to protect the environment in their daily lives. In addition, various media such as environmental picture books and environmental documentaries were used to interact with infants, and environmental education was practiced by participating in various environmental events and providing opportunities for hands-on experience. Mothers created conditions for children to continue to enjoy various plays and activities related to the environment conducted by early childhood education institutions at home, and provided real materials, videos and books related to environmental education at the institution to expand their interest in the environment. In addition, while actively participating in environment-related activities provided by the institution, we tried to continuously guide infants about the environment, induce behavior, and promote correct environmental awareness. In addition, mothers of infants naturally practiced environmental education by guiding infants to take the initiative at home by recalling their environmental education experiences in early childhood education institutions. Third, as a result of examining the difficulties experienced in implementing environmental education at home by early childhood mothers, they recognized environmental problems and recognized the need for environmental education, but in reality, they lacked time and did not suffer significant damage from the environment, making it difficult to implement it. Children's low interest and interest in the environment also made it difficult to practice environmental education. In order to continue to practice environmental education, early childhood mothers demanded that materials such as media such as videos or fun songs that can arouse children's interest and guidelines containing environmental knowledge and methods and information for environmental education be provided more easily and easily. In addition, it is necessary to promote the importance of environmental education through task practice-oriented linkage activities that all families can perform together in early childhood education institutions, environmental events and campaigns, and create a social atmosphere.
