현대사회와 인공정원의 심리적 표현연구

Abstract

본 논문은 ‘도시인들이 만들고 가꾼 인공정원’의 관찰과 작품분석을 통해 현대사회가 지닌 여러 특징들을 연구하고 현대인들에게 내재되어 있는 심리 상태를 분석한 연구이다. 인공적으로 꾸며진 정원의 모습에서 우리가 살고 있는 사회의 면모를 분석하고, 그 제한된 틀 속에서 자연 본연이 지닌 의지를 확인함으로써 현대사회를 살고 있는 구성원의 심리적 모습을 보다 구체적으로 표현하고자 하였다. 현대인들의 심리적 상태를 연구하기 위해 우선하여 확인 할 것은 우리가 살고 있는 사회의 구조였다. 특히 사회 깊숙이 자리한 자본주의는 사회적 특징을 만드는 여러 요인으로 작용하였다. 자본주의란 ‘생산 사회’를 의미한다. 생산사회에서는 경제적 효율성을 극대화 할 수 있도록 대량 생산이 목적이고 컨베이어벨트와 같은 거대한 기계가 인간을 대체하기 시작했다. 다수를 획일화시키고 자본을 얻기 위해 서로 경쟁하게 되는 사회이다. 그 과정에서 신체적 노동뿐만 아니라 감정노동이 커지고 업무의 성과가 중요한 가치로 자리 잡게 되며 성과 위주의 사회가 된 셈이다. 또한 타인의 시선을 지나치게 의식하여 본래의 자신의 모습이기보다 인위적으로 만들어내고 꾸며진 모습의 자아를 마주하게 된다. 본인은 이러한 현상을 도시인들이 만든 인공정원을 관찰하고 그 속에 내포된 현대사회의 특징 및 심리적 모습을 구체적으로 연구하고 표현해 보고자 하였다. 더 나아가 작품 속에 비친 자연 본연의 모습을 통찰해 봄으로써 사회구조 속에 잠재되어 있는 인간 본연의 의지를 확인하고 내재된 희망을 엿볼 수 있는 계기를 삼고자 하였다. 이것이 작품의 핵심적인 출발점이다. 작업에서 주로 표현된 인공정원 속 식물의 형상과 말끔히 재단되어진 자연의 모습은 현대사회를 사는 구성원들의 내적 상태를 표현해 내는데 목적을 두었다. 정해진 구역을 벗어나지 못하지만 그 안에서 혼신을 다해 성장해 가는 인공정원의 모습을 통한 작가 본인이 지닌 심리적 상태의 반영이기도 하다. 작품표현 방법에 있어서 이러한 심리적 표현을 위해 주재료로 섬세한 표현이 가능한 색연필을 사용하였다. 색연필은 현대사회의 무미건조함을 드러내기에 적합하며 개인의 감정과 존재가치가 가볍게 여겨지듯, 가벼운 무게감 표현이 가능한 도구라 판단하였기 때문이다. 또한 작품구도로 나타나는 여백의 특징을 도입해 불필요한 소재의 삭제, 대상에 대한 몰입도의 증대, 그리고 관람인으로 하여금 시각적 여운을 주고자 하였다. 마지막으로 자연의 색인 녹색연구를 통해 녹색이 지닌 본연의 의미와 내재된 요인들을 연구해 봄으로써 작품 전반에 흐르는 색채에 대한 이해와 표현 방법을 구체화하고자 하였다. 본 논문은 작품에서 담고 있는 이야기는 억압과 제한된 현대사회의 모습을 반영하는 동시에, 절망의 표현으로 끝나는 것이 아닌 녹색이란 색채를 통해 안락하고 희망적 메시지를 담는 것이 작품 활동의 가장 중요한 목표였다. | The purpose of this study was to research various characteristics of today's modern society and analyze the implicit psychology of modern people by observing and analyzing "manmade gardens created and tended by urbanites". This study intended to observe and express the psychology of the members of modern society by analyzing the aspects of the society in which we live based on the appearances of artificially decorated gardens and confirming nature's intrinsic will within those limited frames. First, the structure of the society where we live had to be examined to research the psychology of modern people. In particular, capitalism, which is deeply rooted in our society, worked as various factors for creating our social characteristics. Capitalism refers to "production society". In the production society, its goal became mass production to maximize economic efficiency and giant machines such as conveyor belts began to replace humans. In modern society, capitalism standardizes a number of people and they compete with each other to obtain capital. During this process, not only physical labor, but emotional labor have increased, and our society has become performance-oriented as job performance is positioned as an important value. In addition, individuals are overly conscious of the way other people look at them, thus they create an artificial self rather than their own appearances, and face their decorated self-images. Regarding the characteristics of modern society brought by this capitalism, this study aimed to observe and research "manmade gardens created by urbanites who live in the respective era", thereby researching and expressing the characteristics of modern society implied within those gardens and the psychology of people who live in the era in a detailed manner. Moreover, this study intended to contemplate nature's intrinsic aspects reflected in those manmade gardens and use this act as the opportunity to confirm humans' intrinsic will and look for inherent hopes contained within the social structure. This was the key starting point of the author's creation of the works. The shapes of plants and the appearance of cleanly cut-out nature within the manmade gardens, which were mainly expressed within the author's works, aimed to express the internal conditions of the members of modern society. These manmade gardens that endeavor to grow within their defined zones while not being able to get out of them are also the reflection of the artist's own psychological conditions. As the method of expressing these works, colored pencils, which enable detailed expressions, were mostly used as the main material for the above psychological expressions. Colored pencils were considered suitable for revealing the dryness of modern society and expressing light levels of weight feelings as if individuals' feelings and value of existence are taken lightly. Moreover, the characteristics of blank spaces exhibited by the composition of the works were introduced to remove unnecessary materials, increase the audience's immersion in the subject, and provide the audience with visual aftertastes. Finally, this study intended to concretize our understanding of the main color that flows over the overall works and the method of its expression by performing more detailed research on the green color's intrinsic meanings and its implicit elements through a review of nature's color green. As its main story, this study aimed to reflect the appearance of today's oppressed and confined modern society. At the same time, the most important purpose of the author's creation was to contain a comfortable and hopeful message using the color green instead of ending up expressing despair.
