The Purpose of this study is to provide systematic information to teachers involved in the guidance of choruses in elementary, middle, and high schools and to those who participate in social and religious chorus conducting, and of proposing the direction of Chorus related to future chorus conducting for researchers, by apprehending study trends and by finding and organizing Chorus interpretation theses that performs the role of a major axis in chorus conduction.
Seen from the perception of literature theses, content concerning chorus conducting and rehearsal technique are periodically presented, however, there are no literature theses with in-depth study in the interpretation of Chorus. Thus, 247 theses on the interpretation of Chorus related to chorus conducting as presented over 36 years from 1976 to 2012, to provide data that can be referred by researchers and teachers that wish to conduct future study and education on the interpretation of performance related to chorus conducting.
To perform such projects, the need for literature studies in music education has firstly been considered, followed by the defining of chorus conducting and the examination of its history. Next, Chorus interpretation theses related to chorus conducting of standard graduate schools, graduate schools of education, and graduate school of theology have been analyzed and organized. 247 performance interpretation these related to chorus conducting have been collected centrally from the National Assembly Library and RISS, and the Korea Education & Research Information Service, and research trends have been analyzed through the number of theses presented concerning each year, school, major, subject, and composer. Chorus were categorized into eight categories of Gregorian chant, mass, motet, requiem, choral, cantata, oratorio, and passion for the analysis of the interpretation of Chorus for chorus conducting, and the musical properties of each category have been briefly depicted.
Less than five annual academic theses that interpret Chorus in relation to chorus conducting have been published from 1976 to 2000, however from 2000, the number of published these dramatically increased to an approximate annual amount of 10 theses. This verified the increase of the population participating in chorus literature at a rapid speed.
In the study trends of each school and major related to chorus conducting, standard graduate school students displayed significantly high in comparison to theses by graduate school of education students. This is because each university newly established departments of conducting.
In the study trends of each era, the interpretation of Chorus was most frequently conducted concerning songs of the Baroque era, and the greatest number of theses was published in the order to contemporary, Romanticism, Classicism, and the Renaissance.
In each category of chorus interpretation, the interpretation of oratorio was the most frequently conducted, and the greatest number of theses was published in the order of mass, cantata, requiem, choral, motet, and passion. Concerning composers, studies on Handel’s oratorio and Bach’s cantata of the Baroque era were the most actively conducted.
As so, the following has been proposed for a balanced and progressive study on the interpretation of Chorus related to chorus conduction, based on the analysis of trends of the interpretation of Chorus in relation to chorus conduction.
First, the importance of chorus literature studies must be recognized.
Second, researchers must conduct their own unique and special study with pride and mission that their own thesis contains the professional data of the interpretation of Chorus in relation to chorus conduction
Third, there is a need for study content of various themes. There is a need for multiple angles of approaches, just as many directions of the Messiah were studied among theses that interpret Chorus composed by Handel.
This study is hoped to help the selection of direction and theme to researchers that intend to study the interpretation of Chorus in relation to conducting, and to contribute to the qualitative development of the interpretation of Chorus in relation to chorus conducting.
