코퍼스 기반 고등학교 영어 교과서와 국내 대학 영자 신문의 연관성 연구

Abstract

본 논문에서는 EFL환경인 한국에서 영어 학습을 위해 가장 많이 사용되고 중요한 학습 자료인 영어 교과서가 학습자에게 미치는 영향에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 교과서 영어의 특징을 분석하여 그러한 특징이 국내 대학 영자 신문사설의 영어에서도 비슷하게 나타나는지 알아보았다. 특징 분석을 위해 선정된 항목은 사용빈도가 높으며, 한국인 영어 학습자들이 어려워하는 역접의 의미를 나타내는 however와 but의 비교, 미래를 나타내는 will과 be going to를 택하였다. 접속(부)사 however와 but은 앞의 내용과 반대되는 내용을 말하거나 서술하기 위해 사용된다는 점에서 비교대상으로 선정되었고 will과 be going to는 미래를 나타내기 위해 사용되기 때문에 비교대상으로 선정되었다. 실제로 기초 영문법에서도 두 표현에 대해 설명하고 있지만 여전히 영어 학습자들에게 두 표현을 구분해서 사용하는 것은 어려운 과제로 남아있다는 점에서 의의를 가진다. 사용양상 비교를 통해 영어 교과서와 대학 영자 신문사설의 연관성을 알아보고자 하였다. 영어 교과서와 대학 영자 신문 코퍼스에서 나타난 however와 but의 사용양상과 will과 be going to의 사용양상은 비슷하게 나타났다. 먼저 however와 but을 비교한 결과, 영어 교과서와 대학 영자 신문 모두에서 however보다 but의 사용비율이 더 높았다. 문두, 문중 출현 비율에 있어서도 두 코퍼스에서 비슷한 양상을 보였다. however는 문두에 나타나는 비율이 높았으며 but은 문중에 사용되는 경우가 많았다. will과 be going to 비교결과, be going to의 사용비율보다 will의 사용비율이 현저히 높은 것으로 영어 교과서와 대학 영자 신문에서 나타났다. 또한 영어 교과서 코퍼스에서 will이 구어체와 문어체에서 be going to보다 높은 사용비율을 보였으며 사전 결정된 미래를 나타내기 위해서는 be going to를, 화자가 말하는 시점에 결정된 미래를 위해서는 will이 사용되는 비율이 높았다. 영어 교과서 코퍼스에서 나타난 will과 be going to의 이 같은 특징은 대학 영자 신문 코퍼스에서도 동일하게 나타났다. 이와 함께, 영어 교과서 출판사별 however와 but의 사용 비율, will과 be going to의 사용 비율을 살펴 본 결과, 세 개의 출판사에서 비슷한 사용양상을 보였다.|English textbooks are the most important and used material for English studying in countries which use English as Foreign language such as Korea. For this reason, Korean students’ English competence could be considerably effected by English textbooks. English newspapers in Korean Universities writers might studied English with English textbooks, so features of English textbooks might appear in English newspapers in Korean Universities.

For this thesis, frequency, location, and meaning of function words however/but and will/be going to were examined. For this study, texts from 11 high school textbooks and 100 newspaper articles were chosen. The results are as follow. First, in however/but analysis, however appears more frequently than but in both textbooks and English newspapers in Korean Universities articles. Also, locations of however/but were similar in the textbooks and the newspaper articles. For example, however mostly located at the beginning of sentences in both textbooks and English newspapers in Korean Universities articles. The result of location of but was the other way. but are generally located at the middle of the sentences in both textbooks and English newspapers in Korean Universities articles.

Second, in terms of frequency, will appears far more than be going to both in the textbooks and the English newspapers in Korean Universities articles. In spoken and written English, will appears more than be going to in both textbooks and English newspapers in Korean Universities articles. Also, will was used when someone decide to do something at the time of speaking, while be going to was used when someone have already decided to do something.

Further, frequency and location of however/but and will/be going to were examined according to publisher of textbooks. There was not significant difference between publishers of textbooks consequently.

According to this study, there were similarities between English textbooks’s English and English newspapers in Korean Universities articles’ English. It means that Korean students’ English competence could be considerably effected by English textbooks.
