Some Applications of Storytelling in Middle School Mathematics
Abstract
Storytelling, as a mean to express and transfer the experiences, emotions and process of thoughts, helps learners to promote ability of communications, to understand information, and to have affirmative attitude about learning.
In mathematics education, storytelling has significance in various aspects such as helping leanears to have interests and affirmative attitude in mathematics learning, acceleration of development of mathematical thinking ability, easy constructionof integrated curriculum.
In this thesis, we study the educational meaning of storytelling and especially, we investigate storytelling models which can be applied in mathematics education. we classify four types of storytelling models about system of linear equations and inequalities for second grade middle school students.
As conculusion, we show the educational effect of each models as follows;
First, materials from history of mathematics can help students to access the core of mathematical problems throgh communications with teachers and to find methods of problem solving by themselves.
Second, for the materials related to real life, storytelling has an effect to see the neccesity of mathematical symbol in addition to simple computation and to have experiences of confirming
mathematical concepts.
Third, for the materials related to other topics, students can understand the relation between mathematics
and literature, physics, chemistry, etc. and the real world.
Fourth, for the materials related to games, students can understand the relation between problems of
distance/time/velocity and game, have access easily to those problems and perceive the
neccesity of mathematical formula.
