죄와 벌의 관계로 본〈숙향전〉

Abstract

〈숙향전〉은 창작시기를 정확히 가늠하긴 어렵지만 17세기 말에 형성된 것으로 추정되는 고전소설 중 비교적 이른 시기에 해당되는 작품이다. 〈숙향전〉은 숙향과 이선, 그 밖의 등장인물들이 천상에서 지은 죄로 인한 지상에서 겪게 되는 형벌과 속죄가 첨예하게 얽혀서 핵심적 구조를 이룬다. 즉 적강구조가 작품 곳곳에 온전히 실현되어 이를 중심으로 서사가 전개되는 작품이라 할 수 있으며 이 점이 여타의 적강형 소설과 구별되는〈숙향전〉만의 특징이라 할 수 있다. 특히〈숙향전〉의 적강은 기존논의에서도 중심축으로 연구되었지만 죄와 벌의 구조까지 연구의 폭이 확대되지 못했기 때문에 이러한 점에 주목하여〈숙향전〉의 적강을 죄와 벌의 관계망 속에서 세밀하게 고찰하고자 하였다. 본고에서는 이와 같은〈숙향전〉의 특이점에 주목해 각 인물별 적강 형상을 면밀히 살폈으며 또한〈숙향전〉의 특징을 찾아내기 위해 적강형 소설인 타 작품과는 어떤 차이점을 드러내는지〈숙향전〉과 유사한 적강형 소설들과도 함께 살펴보았다. 그 결과 적강이 주인공에만 집중되어 서사가 진행된 여타의 적강형 소설과는 달리〈숙향전〉의 서사는 주인공과 그 밖의 등장인물들 간의 관계가 천상계와 연관되어 지상에서도 빈틈없이 진행되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 즉 작가는〈숙향전〉의 주인공 숙향을 중심으로 각 인물들을 배치하여 이들이 어떻게 관계를 맺게 되는지 죄와 벌의 관점으로 서사를 진행시켰다. 천상계?지상계?천상계의 적강의 정형적 구조인 순환체계가〈숙향전〉에선 주인공과 그 밖에 인물들의 관계 속에서 인과적으로 치밀하게 구현되었던 것이다. 그렇다면 비교적 이른 시기의 작품인 적강의 논리가 강하게 적용되는〈숙향전〉을 통해 작가가 보여주고자 한 것은 무엇일까? 또한 왜 그토록 철저하게〈숙향전〉의 모든 등장인물들을 죄와 벌이라는 적강의 틀 속에서 구현해 내고자 한 것일까? 이는 당대인들의 사고관념, 즉 작품속의 인물들과 작품을 접하는 대중들의 의식 때문이었을 것이다. 〈숙향전〉의 등장인물들은 작품 속에서 자신들에게 부여된 죄와 벌을 대하는 태도는 그 경중에 상관없이 이를 거부하지 않고 자신의 운명으로 받아들인다. 지상에서 벌어지는 현세의 일, 즉 고난과 벌이 자신들의 천상죄업 때문임을 숙지하고 이를 회피하거나 거부하지 않고 순응하는 것이다. 이러한 관념은 당대인들의 중세의 사고방식과도 직결된 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 〈숙향전〉의 등장인물들은 이원론적인 세계관을 믿고 있었기에 죄에서 벗어나려거나 반항하지 않은 채 자신의 현재의 상황이 천상 업 때문이라고 받아들였던 것이다. 결국〈숙향전〉은 천상죄와 지상벌이라는 적강의 틀에 기대어 문학적 장치로 풀어낸 작품이며 이러한 이원론적인 세계관을 믿던 당시의 사고관념이 대중들에게도 관통하고 있었기에 공감대를 형성할 수 있었다고 여겨진다. 천상세계를 믿으며 자신의 고단한 현세는 전생의 업 과 관련 있다고 믿는 인간 원죄의식에 기대어 작가는〈숙향전〉을 창작하였던 것이다. 또한 천상죄인이었던 작중인물들이 현세의 벌을 감내하는 과정은 인간 삶의 여정 속에 맞닥트리는 고난이기도 하기에 이들이 그것을 극복해내는 과정은 대중들의 마음을 끌기에 부족함이 없었을 것이다. 이상과 같이 보았을 때〈숙향전〉의 작가가 등장인물들 간의 천상에서부터 얽힌 관계를 지상으로까지 재현하여 죄와 벌로 서사를 풀어낸 것은 작가의 창작 의도에 의한 설정이라는 것을 알 수 있다. 작가는〈숙향전〉의 인물들 각자가 지은 천상 업으로 인한 죄의 형벌을 지상에서 치르는 동안 그들 사이에 얽힌 문제들이 하나씩 해결되게끔 만들어 나간다. 죄와 벌도 각각 다르게 적용시켜 타인의 부족한 부분은 채워 주기도하고, 가해자 · 피해자 · 원인제공자로서 서로에게 상처를 입히며 반목과 대립적 상황을 만들어냈던 관계들을 지상형벌을 받는 과정을 통해 이전의 갈등이 해소되게 만든 것이라 할 수 있다. 다시 말해 천상의 업 으로 인한 소통의 부재를 겪었던 관계가 지상 죄업을 겪어나가는 과정 속에서 상대방을 이해하게 되고 서로 화해할 수 있게 된 것이라 할 수 있다. 〈숙향전〉의 인물들은 자신들의 천상죄업에 대한 죄 값을 지상형벌을 통해 모두 치러 내게 되자 현세에서 막혔던 고단했던 삶은 그들이 소망하던 조화롭고 안정된, 가장 이상적인 삶의 모습으로 변모하게 되었기 때문이다. 즉 적강의 논리에 의해 등장인물들 간의 관계를 회복시키며 대동화합을 반영한 작품이〈숙향전〉이라 볼 수 있다. |<Sook Hyang Jeon> is difficult to estimate the date of writing, but it is comparatively earlier literary work among traditional novel assumed formation at the end of the 19th century. The punishment and atone on the earth of Sookhyang, E-sun and the other characters caused by their sin on the heaven makes fundamental structure of <Sook Hyang Jeon>. In particular, <Sook Hyang Jeon>’s jeokgang was studied in the central axis in the discussion of the existing research, but it was not expanded to study about structure of sin and punishment. Therefore, this study focus on relationship between sin and punishment in <Sook Hyang Jeon>. In this thesis, saw examined a specific shape jeokgang each person and singularity before sookhyang attention the a novel jeokgang and other works to find the features before sookhyang not reveal any difference between novel jeokgang similar to the sookhyang before and take a look. In result, it was verified the description of <Sook Hyang Jeon>, the relationships between main characters and other characters in the Heaven continue in the Ground. It is different with other general novels of Jeokgang which focus on only main characters. That is, writer progress the description from the perspective of sin and punishment, positioning each character with Sookhyang as the central figure. The formal structure of the circulatory system of ‘Jeokgang’ ?Heaven?Ground?Heaven- was realized carefully relationships between characters in <Sook Hyang Jeon>. So then, what is the thing that the writer want to show readers with <Sook Hyang Jeon>? Also, why writer realize so thoroughly <Sook Hyang Jeon> of all the characters in the crime and punishment lecture ever implemented in the framework? This is the thinking of contemporary ideas, or work with the person in the public consciousness because of the work would have been in contact. <Sook Hyang Jeonn> have been granted to the characters in their attitudes towards crime and punishment, regardless of the severity refuse to accept his fate without. Happening on the ground temporal one, ie, suffering and punishment because of their heavenly sin avoidance or deny that it does not understand and is compliant. This concept contemporary of the medieval way of thinking and also directly concerning that can be seen. The chacters of <Sook Hyang Jeon> accepted their situation as caused by their Heaven’s ‘Eob’. As a result, <Sook Hyang Jeon> utilized a literature tool ‘Jeokgang frame’-the sin in Heaven and Ground- and was able to draw a full attention from the public whom believed in this kind of world view regarding dualism. The author created <Sook Hyang Jeon> based on human kinds awareness in original sin, which gives account on present life’s hard time is related to previous life’s ‘Eob’. The characters who were heavens offender enduring this worlds sin is same what revealing mankind’s adversity that we face and had no shortage to attract public interest. Like above, it was the author’s delicate intent to chronically reproduce character’s tangled relation ranging from Heaven to Ground. The writer had set up the situation in which each individual pay back the ‘Eob’ in Heaven on the Ground that also accompanies the problems within the individual’s to be returned. Sin and punishment is also differently granted so as to fill in for other’s short comings, hurt one another in the manner of being perpetrator, victim and offerer making a relationship facing hostile and opposing situation are alleviated by being punished. In other words, absence in communication up in Heaven owing to ‘Eob’ was able to be relieved in the course of undergoing the Ground’s ‘Eob’.
