조지프 코넬(Joseph Cornell) 상자 작품에 나타나는 "여성 이미지" 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 조지프 코넬(Joseph Cornell, 1903~1972)의 상자 작품에 나타나는 “여성 이미지”에 관한 연구이다. 미국 초현실주의를 대표하는 작가인 코넬은 상자 안에 여러 종류의 오브제를 담아 ‘상자 작품’을 제작했다. 그의 상자 작품을 구성하는 재료들은 다음과 같이 집약해 볼 수 있다. 하나는 당대의 유명한 발레리나와 여배우, 혹은 소녀의 사진, 삽화, 소지품 이고 다른 하나는 꽃, 유리, 인조보석, 갑각류, 동물, 곤충 등이다. 이것은 코넬이 심취했던 낭만주의와 초현실주의를 토대로 한 (그의) 여성 이미지의 상징들로, 그의 상자 작업에서 여성은 영감의 뮤즈, 팜므 파탈, 아이의 모습으로 투영된다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 코넬의 상자 작업에 등장하는 오브제가 ‘여성 이미지’의 상징이라는 전제하에 작가의 전성기였던 1940년대와 1950년대 사이 중점적으로 제작된 발레리나, 여배우, 소녀의 사진과 그녀들을 상징하는 오브제를 담고 있는 ‘상자 작품’들을 통해 여성 이미지를 분석한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 크게 세 부분으로 나누어 전개하고자 한다. Ⅱ장에서는 먼저, 코넬의 여성 이미지 형성에 중요한 요인으로 사료되는 생애에 대해 살펴본다. Ⅲ장에서는 여성 이미지의 형성 배경과 특징을 고찰한다. 1절 낭만주의와 초현실주의의 영향에서는 동경과 숭배적 대상으로의 여성, 관음성과 페티시(Fetish)적 대상으로의 여성으로 절을 나누어 알아보고, 2절에서는 ‘여성=아이(Femme=Enfant)’, ‘여성=팜므 파탈(Femme=Femme Fatale)’, ‘여성=뮤즈(Femme=Muse)’로 분류하여 코넬 여성 이미지의 특징을 알아본다. 이를 바탕으로 Ⅳ장에서는 위의 영향과 특징을 함축하는 코넬 작품의 여성인 발레리나, 여배우, 소녀가 등장하는 상자 작업을 분석한다. 1절에서는 작품 <탈리오니 보석상자 (Taglioni's Jewel Casket)>(1940)를 통해 발레리나로 상징되는 여성 이미지를, 2절에서는 <로렌 바콜의 페니 아케이드 초상 (Penny Arcade Portrait of Lauren Bacall)>(1945~46)을 통해 여배우로 상징되는 여성 이미지를 살펴본다. 3절 에서는 <메디치 공주 (Medici Princess)>(1952~54)를 통해 소녀로 상징되는 여성 이미지를 살펴보고 이들 작품에서 보여 지는 낭만주의와 초현실주의로 부터의 특징을 고찰한다. 이를 통해 본 논자는 코넬의 상자 작업에서 여성은 인조 보석과 같은 장식물, 클로즈업(Close-up)된 사진, 초상 등을 통해 투영되었다는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 작품에 나타나는 ‘아이’, ‘팜므파탈’, ‘뮤즈’의 성격은 ‘발레리나’, ‘여배우’, ‘소녀’를 통해 ‘아이와 팜므파탈’, ‘아이와 뮤즈’같은 양가적 특성으로 표현되었음을 찾을 수 있었다. 또 그의 작품에 등장하는 여배우의 사진 등은 1950년대 후반 라우셴버그(Rauschenberg)의 네오 다다와 앤디 워홀(Andy Warhol)의 팝 아트에 많은 영향을 미쳤다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. |This thesis is a research on “feminine image” shown in the box works of Joseph Cornell (1903~1972). Cornell, an artist representing American Surrealism, had produced ‘box works’ by putting various objets in the box. The materials used for his box works are summarized as follows; 1) photos, illustrations, and belongings of famous ballerinas (or girls) and actresses of the years, or girl, 2) flower, glass, artificial gem, crustacea, animal, insect and so on. As the symbols of his feminine image based on Romanticism and Surrealism fascinated by Cornell, female is projected as muse of inspiration, femme fatale, and enfant through box works. Therefore, in this thesis, ‘feminine image’ is analyzed through Cornell's box works produced during his heyday, especially between 1940s and 1950s. These works containing photos of ballerina, actress, and a girl as well as objets representing them. This research is developed into three big sections. At first, in chapter II, his life is observed as an important element for forming Cornell's feminine image. In chapter III, background and characteristics of feminine image is studied. 'Verse 1 The Effects of Romanticism and Surrealism examines women in two aspects: women as subjects of longing and worship, and women as subjects of voyeurism and fetishism. Verse 2 investigates characteristics of Cornell's feminine image, such as ‘Femme=Enfant’, ‘Femme=Femme Fatale’ and ‘Femme=Muse’. Finally, in chapter IV, the masterpieces of Cornell's box works are analyzed, which ballerina, actress and girl appear. Feminine image represented as ballerina through <Taglioni's Jewel Casket>(1940) and actress through <Penny Arcade Portrait of Lauren Bacall>(1945~46) are observed in verse 1 and 2, respectively. Verse 3 shows feminine image represented as girl through <Medici Princess>(1952~54). As a result, this paper shows that, in Cornell's box works, female is reflected through ornaments like artificial jewels, close-up photos, portrait, etc., and the characteristics of ‘enfant’, ‘Femme Fatale’ and ‘Muse’ are represented as ambivalent characters, such as ‘Enfant and Femme Farale’ and ‘Enfant and Muse’, through ‘ballerina’, ‘actress’ and ‘girl’. It is also verified that photo of actress and such appeared in his works greatly influenced neo-Dada of Rauschenberg and Pop art of Andy Warhol in the late 1950s.
