자유의 양면성에 대한 상징적 표현 연구 : 본인의 작품을 중심으로

Abstract

사회는 개인을 발전시키고 개인은 사회의 발전에 이바지한다. 그러나 한편 사회는 개인의 자유를 억압하여 무력화시키며 개인은 사회의 권력에 복종하며 또한 대항한다. 오늘날 우리가 살아가고 있는 시대는 과학과 문명의 진보로 인해 근대 이전의 온갖 구속으로부터 벗어나 자유를 누리고 있다. 그러나 이것은 어디까지나 종교, 정치, 자연으로부터의 자유일 뿐이며 '주체적 의사 결정'의 '본질적 자유'에서는 오히려 멀어지고 있다. 다시 말하면 현대 사회의 개인은 정치 제도와 온갖 대중 매체, 수많은 이익 사회, 대량의 물질 재화들 속에서 자신이 미증유의 자유를 누리고 있다고 '생각'하고 있다. 그러나 실제로는 '욕망' - 자신 존재에 대한 욕망이든, 물리적 이익에 대한 욕망이든 - 에 의해 통제되는 '다수의 의사 결정'을 따르고 있을 뿐 궁극적으로는 자신의 자유의지(free will)는 상실하고 사회는 획일화되어가고 있다. 본인은 현대 사회가 개인을 대중화시킴으로써 개인의 다양성을 제한하고 개인은 개성적 삶을 욕망하면서도 사회로부터의 소외와 고립을 두려워하여 스스로 '본질적 자유'를 포기한 채 대중적 삶을 선택하는, 자유의 양면성속에서 갈등하는 인간상을 표현해왔다. 본 논문은 이러한 본인의 작품을 대상으로 이론적 배경, 소재의 상징성과 표현 방법 등을 서술한 것으로 총 3장으로 구성되어 있다. 제 1장 서론에서는 주제설정 동기와 연구 목적을 설명하였다. 제 2장 본론에서는 작품의 이론적 배경으로 현대 사회의 소극적 자유와 적극적 자유 즉, 자유의 양면성을 설명하였다. 또한 고독과 소외감에서 벗어나기 위해 소극적 자유를 선택하게 되고 그것으로 인해 야기되는 획일화 현상을 설명하였다. 이를 표현하기 위해 도입한 형태의 상징성과 형태적인 근거 및 의미, 표현방법과 작품 분석을 서술하였다. 제 3장 결론에서는 본 논문의 내용을 정리하고 향후 작업 방향을 제시하였다.|A society enlightens an individual, while an individual contributes to the development of the society where she belongs to. However, at the same time, a society interfere personal liberty, while an individual confront the absolute authority of the society. It appears that any individual does not have any trouble enjoying freedom thanks to technological advancement and civilization. Nevertheless, this kind of freedom can only be defined as the 'freedom' of religion, politics, and the force of nature. Therefore, people are even far from 'fundamental freedom', which characterize independent decision making. As a matter of fact, people in the modern society 'believe' that they possess unprecedented freedom in consequence of mass media, mass products, diverse social structures, and political environments. Conversely, the society is becoming homogeneous as its members give up their own uniqueness, but follow 'mass deliberative decision' controlled by 'desire', both for personal identity and for materialistic benefits. The present author has been representing personalities disturbed by the two faces of freedom. The contemporary society disguises person uniqueness by perceiving its members as a homogeneous group. Simultaneously, the individuals choose to live as elements of the homogeneous group in the fear of alienation and isolation from the society, even though in t heir deep in minds, they seek for distinctiveness. The present thesis is composed of three chapters, all of which elaborate the theoretical background, the interpretation of materials used, and the manners of representing the present author's work. The purpose of this study will be explained by the Chapter 1. In the Chapter 2, the theoretical background of the present author's work will demonstrates the conflict between negative and positive freedoms. Also, it describes the homogeneity resulted from the conflict, by illustrating the theory of 'the spiral of silence' and the cases of the social homogeneity. The analysis of the present author's work will also be rationalized by assessing the demonstration methods of symbolism, the reasons and significance of its structure. This present study will be concluded by summarizing and presenting the directions for the future study in the Chapter 3.
