엔도슈사쿠의 '깊은강'론

Abstract

소설이 허구의 산물이라고는 하지만, 그 안에는 분명 작가의 현실적 체험이나 사상이 녹아나 있다. 한 작가의 작품을 형성하는 본질적 요소가 환경적 영향이라는 사실에서도 알 수 있듯이, 이러한 영향은 의식한다고 해서 구축되고 의식하지 않는다고 해서 의식 속에서 소멸되는 것은 아니다. 엔도슈사쿠(遠藤周作）역시 이러한 원체험적 영향이 작품 속에 반영되어 있다고 하겠다. 따라서 본고에서는 어린시절 이질적인 거리감에서 시작된 종교를 일생 문학이라는 매개체로 변용시켜 받아들인 사실에 주목하여, 그의 원체험인 환경적 사상적 영향관계를 중심으로 생각해 보기로 하였다. 또한 엔도가 카톨릭 신앙을 가진 일본의 문학가라는 입장에서 자신의 문학을 창작한 것이라 보고, 엔도의 많은 작품들 중 소설『깊은강(深い河)』을 텍스트로 하여, 그 안에 반영된 작가의 내면적 인식(원체험의 영향)을 문학의 주제와 연관시켜 분석하고자 한다. 일생을 통해 신앙의 문제를 일관된 모티브로 추구해 왔던 엔도는 작품『깊은강(深い河)』을 통해, 다양한 종교에 공통하는 본질인 「전생」「동반자」「모성적신」「구원(영원)」등과 같은 문제를 논한다. 소설 속의 주인공들은 이러한 각각의 과제를 가지고 등장하지만, 그 과제는 모두 작가 자신 속에서 오랜 시간 중요한 의미를 가져왔던 것이다. 엔도는 『깊은강(深い河)』속에서 종교의 종파를 초월하여 인간의 생과 추함과 슬픔, 선과 악이 혼재한 우리들의 모든 것을 포용하는 신의 모습을 추구한다. 그 대표적 상징으로서 엔도는 ‘갠지스강’을 「모든 사람을 위한 ‘깊은 강’」의 상징으로서 나타낸다. 이 성스러운 구원의 강은, 불변적인 인류의 구제의 강으로서의 사랑의 상징이 되고 있다. 이 작품을 통해 엔도는 신앙에 대한 동양과 서양의 견해의 차이를 조명하는 것을 시작으로 하여, ‘신’을 우러르는 대상이 아닌 인간과 가깝고 한없이 온후한 사랑이 넘치는 신으로서의 모습을 찾고 있다고 하겠다. 이와같이 엔도는 문학이라는 매개체를 이용하여 유일신을 갖지 않은 ‘일본’이라는 풍토속에서, 서양의 신의 모습을 일본인의 입장에서 추구하는 자신의 작가관과 종교관을 작품『깊은강(深い河)』속에 담고 있다고 할 수 있겠다.|Although a novel is said to be the product of fiction, it certainly contains a writer's actual experience or thought. Endo Shusaku would also have influences of his actual experience reflected in his works. With focus on the fact that he began to approach a religion due to the sense of heterogeneity in childhood and accepted it in the changed form of a medium of literature through life, this study aims at investigating effects of environment and thought as his experience. Considering that Endo created his literary works as a Japanese literary man believing in Catholicism, this study intends to analyze his internal awareness (effects of experience) reflected in his novel Deep River among his many works in connection with the literary theme. In Deep River, Endo pursues God who embraces human life, ugliness, sorrow, and all the other things mixed with good and evil beyond denomination. For a typical example, he presents the Ganges River as a symbol of "a deep river for all the people." This holy river of salvation is symbolic of love as a river of unchangeable human salvation. In this work, Endo begins with considering differences between the East and the West in the ideas of belief in search of God who is close to human beings and overflowing with love rather than the target for reverence. In conclusion, Endo expresses his view of artists and religions in pursuit of Western God as a Japanese in Deep River through a medium of literature in the climate of Japan never believing in the one and only God.
