양혜진의 The Music for Equus 연구

Abstract

양혜진의 The Music for Equus는 4개의 서로 다른 음악적 형식과 악기 편성으로 이루어진 음악으로서,이는 피터 쉐퍼(Peter Shaffer)의 희곡 Equus를 재료로 하여 극에서 가져온 인물과 주제의 상징과 그에 대한 특징 등을 다양한 음악 어법과 형식을 통해 형상화한 작품이다. 양혜진의 The Music for Equus의 네 악곡 즉, “알런과 다이사트”, “알런의 독백”, “알런과 질”, 마지막으로 “Equus !”는 희곡 Equus의 극적 구조와 주제의식 , 인물의 성격 등을 작곡자의 입장에서 다시 구성하여 다루고자 하는 메시지를 네 개의 타이틀로 만든 것이다. 또 음악적인 면에 있어서 이러한 문학적 재료와 이미지는 그 표현의 소재가 되었다. 따라서 논자는 양혜진의 The Music for Equus와 피터 쉐퍼의 희곡 Equus의 극적구성과 음악적 구성의 상호 관련성을 다루고, 희곡의 문학적 상징이 The Music for Equus에서 어떻게 음악적으로 표현되고 있는지를 논하였다. 그리고 이러한 논점을 토대로 하여 양혜진의 The Music for Equus를 분석하였다. 본고의 서론에서는 앞서 언급한 연구 목적과 그 방법론이 제시되었고, 본론에서는 양혜진의 The Music for Equus와 피터 쉐퍼의 희곡 Equus의 상호 관련성과 음악적 상징을 논하고 있으며, 마지막으로 양혜진의 The Music for Equus의 네 악곡에 대한 분석이 시도되었다. 그러나 논자는 무엇보다도 양혜진의 The Music for Equus가 단순히 희곡의 분위기나 인물의 특징을 묘사하기 위한 음악이 아니라 작곡자 나름의 구성을 통해 창작된 음악이라는 것을 중요하게 다루고자 하였다. 그러므로 본고는 음악이 문학적 재료를 ‘얼마나’ 충실히 묘사하는가 보다는 음악 그 자체로서 어떻게 구성되고 짜여져 있는 지에 초점을 두어 양혜진의 The Music for Equus가 갖는 독립된 음악으로서의 의미를 밝히는데 그 비중을 두고 있음을 언급해둔다.|Yang, Hye-jin’s The Music for Equus is composed of four pieces. Each piece has a unique instrumentaion, its musical language, characteristics, techniques, the structure and etc. The Music for Equus is based on Peter Shaffer’s drama, Equus. The composer as well as the writer of this paper wrote her music employing the materials of the symbols and the characters of this drama. The characters, the plot, conflicts, and themes of this drama were analyzed and redefined through four pieces of music: Alan and Dysart, Alan’s monologue, Alan and Jill and Equus !. The title of each music refers to themes of the composition. In this composition, the symbols from the literary work are presented as subjective material of musical expression. This dissertation deals with the relationship between the drama and the musical composition, the way literary symbols of the drama were interpreted into musical structure. It is clear that The Music for Equus is not just background music but a musical composition based on the writer’s own analysis and definition on the drama. This dissertation aims to clarify ‘how’ the composer redefined the drama and interpreted literary symbols into music. The purpose and focus of this dissertation were stated in the introduction. The main body consists of research on the relationships between drama Equus and musical composition, The Music for Equus, literary symbols of The Music for Equus in the musical composition and analysis of each chapter. The Music for Equus is not just a musical version of the drama but rather a unique creation, based on the composer’s own definition of the drama.
