아랑 설화의 현대적 변용 연구

Abstract

본 논문에서는 개별설화로는 드물게 현대소설과 영화로 전승되어 현대에도 많은 관심을 받고 있는 ‘아랑 설화’의 현대적인 계승과 변용에 대하여 살펴보았다. 설화는 그 장르의 특성상 우리 민족의 경험과 생활모습, 그리고 감정까지 담겨있어서 문학적인 의미와 함께 문화적인 의미도 가지고 있는 국문학의 중요한 장르이다. 그렇기 때문에 설화의 의미를 살펴보는 것은 우리 문화를 이해하는 하나의 방법이 된다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 설화의 문학적 상징성에 주목하여 연구를 진행하고자 한다. 다양한 장르에서 재구성되고 있는 ‘아랑 설화’는 현대 소설과 영화로 제작되었다. 이러한 작품들은 단순히 ‘아랑 설화’의 모티브를 차용한 것이 아니라, 설화가 지니고 있는 다양한 이야기 구조와 더불어 상징체계까지 다루고 있다. 현대적 전승물을 연구함으로써 ‘아랑 설화’의 문학적인 의미를 돌아보고자 하였다. 본 연구는 설화, 소설, 영화라는 세 가지 장르를 아우르고 있다. 따라서 우선 연구 대상인 ‘아랑 설화’에 관한 연구, 현대 소설 <아랑은 왜>에 관한 연구, 영화 <아랑>에 관한 연구를 검토하였다. ‘아랑 설화’의 경우 기존의 연구 성과를 중심으로 인물과 서사단락의 특징을 파악하여 ‘아랑 설화’가 갖는 문학적인 생명력과 의미를 살펴보았다. 현대 소설 <아랑은 왜>는 ‘아랑 설화’를 차용하여 쓰여진 추리소설이다. 하지만 단순히 ‘아랑 설화’를 모티브로 하여 소설로 꾸민 것은 아니다. 오히려 ‘아랑 설화’의 내용과는 관련이 없는 듯 보이는 독특한 창작물이다. 하지만 ‘아랑 설화’의 내용을 다각도로 검토하여 또 다른 이야기로 재구성함과 동시에 표현적인 측면에서는 고전 문학의 다양한 특징과 상징을 형상화하였다. 따라서 <아랑은 왜>의 서사단락과 인물, 그리고 ‘아랑 설화’와의 관계를 파악하여 ‘아랑 설화’의 변이 양상을 도출하고자 하였다. 소설에서 재구성된 ‘아랑 설화’는 ‘아랑 설화’의 여러 각편 중 작가가 선택하여 재구성한 또 하나의 각편이며, 장르는 다르지만 또 다른 ‘아랑 설화’를 형상화한 것이다. 영화 <아랑>은 ‘아랑 설화’를 소재로 삼아 제작된 공포영화이다. 앞서 제시한 <아랑은 왜>가 소재적인 측면에서 아랑 설화를 차용했다면, 영화 <아랑>은 설화의 주제적 측면을 부각하고자 한 작품이다. ‘아랑 설화’는 대표적인 원귀설화로써, 흔히 우리가 말하는 ‘귀신 이야기’이다. 때문에 영화 <아랑>은 공포물로 제작되었으며, 대중적인 흥행을 거두는 것을 목표로 하는 상업적인 장르라고 할 수 있다. 표면적으로 보면 이 영화는 한 여성의 억울한 죽음으로 인해 벌어지는 연쇄살인사건을 큰 주제로 하고 있다. 하지만 이 영화의 이면에는 ‘아랑 설화’의 상징체계 및 구조를 효과적으로 보여주고 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 영화 <아랑>의 서사단락과 인물, 그리고 ‘아랑 설화’의 상징체계를 어떻게 재구성하여 보여주고 있는지 밝히고자 하였다. 이처럼 다양한 장르를 넘나드는 설화, 소설, 영화에 대한 비교를 통해 설화가 다양한 장르에서 차지할 수 있는 위치를 파악할 수 있었다. 그리고 ‘설화’의 수용 범위가 장르와 작품마다 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그러한 예로 본 논문에서 제시한 현대소설과 영화의 두 작품은 장르적 차이가 크고, ‘아랑 설화’의 변용 범위가 소재적 측면과 주제적 측면으로 다르다는 점에서 ‘설화’의 현대적 변용의 범위가 넓다는 것을 보여주고자 하였다. ‘아랑 설화’는 그 자체로도 흥미로운 이야기 구조를 지니고 있어 현대에 까지 이야기로 전승되어 왔으며, 재구성될 수 있는 여러 가지 상징과 의미가 존재하였기 때문에 소설과 영화로도 제작되었다. 무엇보다도 한국인의 대표적인 문화와 정서인 ‘원한과 해한’이라는 큰 틀을 어떤 설화보다 명확히 보여주고 있다는 점에서 앞으로도 다양한 장르로 재탄생될 것이라고 생각한다. 이에 본 연구가 앞으로 ‘아랑 설화’와 그것을 전승한 현대 작품의 맥을 이해하는 데 초석이 될 수 있기를 기대한다.|In this thesis, this researcher examined the modern transmission aspect and meaning of 'Arang Narrative' which is handed down as modern novel and movie rarely out of individual narratives and which arouses much interest in modern time also. As narrative is including experience, life form, and even feeling of our rance from the viewpoint of feature of the genre, it is important genre of Korean literature to have cultural meaning with literary meaning. So, it becomes one method to understand our culture to examine the meaning of narrative. In this thesis, this researcher tries to understand our culture through narrative by taking notice of the cultural symbolical nature of this narrative. In addition, this researcher tries to clarify that narrative which started from tradition literature is not old story to be handed down simply in this study. 'Arang Narrative' which is reconstituted in diverse genres from individual story was manufactured modern novel and movie. This researcher tried to reflect on the cultural and literary meaning of 'Arang Narrative' through various transmission materials which doesn't borrow 'Arang Narrative' but which is handling symbol system with diverse story structures that narrative has. This study is including 3 kinds of genres to be narrative, novel and movie. Thus, this researcher examined study on 'Arang Narrative' which is study subject, study on modern novel <Why is Arang>, and movie<Arang>. In case of 'Arang Narrative', this researcher examined literary life power and meaning that 'Arang Narrative' has by grasping the feature of character and narrative structure centering around existing study result. Modern novel<Why is Arang> is detective story written from modern viewpoint by borrowing 'Arang Narrative'. However, it doesn't make 'Arang Narrative' of motive simply but it made diverse feature and symbols of our classical literature into form as novel with 'Arang Narrative'. This researcher tried to deduce the change aspect of 'Arang Narrative' by grasping narrative structure and character of <Why is Arang> and relation with 'Arang Narrative'. 'Arang Narrative' reconstituted from novel is another each piece that author chose out of various each piece of 'Arang Narrative' and reconstituted, and author made efforts so as to fill up the gap of narrative. In addition, author constituted the probability and fictitious nature that novel may have more rationally by reconstituting and feeding diverse characters with narrative structure. Above all, this novel sought modern rationality that modern novel has. And, at the same time, efforts was made, so as to show the form of classics by adding the premodern viewpoint and fantasy nature of classics which is the original form of story, through genre is different. Movie <Arang> is horror movie manufactured by making 'Arang Narrative' of material. 'Arang Narrative' is ghost story that we frequently say as representative ghost narrative. So, movie <Arang> was manufactured as horror material, and it may be referred to as commercial genre to aim at making popular show. To see superficially, this movie makes consecutive murder incidents to occur due to the unjust death of a woman of great subject. However, the back of this movie is showing the symbol system and structure of 'Arang Narrative' effectively. So, this researcher tried to clarify how narrative structure and character of movie <Arang> and the symbol system of 'Arang Narrative" reconstituted. Especially, movie is showing by reconstituting 'Arang Narrative' from female viewpoint. So, it can be seen that it is taking notice of symbol than narrative itself. Through the comparison for narrative, novel and movie to frequent diverse genres like this, this researcher could grasp the position that narrative may occupy in diverse genres. As 'Arang Narrative' has interesting story in itself, it has been transmitted as story up to modern time, and various symbol and meaning to be able to be reconstituted existed. So, it was manufactured as novel and movie. Above all, it is deemed that it will be reborn with diverse genres in the future also in that it is showing great frame, resentment and heartburnings which are the representative culture and emotion of Koreans clearly than any narrative. So, this researcher hopes that this study will be cornerstone for understanding Arang narrative and the line of connection of modern work that it was transmitted in the future also.
