신체 이미지의 추상적 표현을 통한 자아 탐구

Abstract

본 논문은 2022년부터 2024년까지 작업한‘G35’시리즈를 중심으로 작품의 내용과 조형 연구 과정에 대해 서술하였다.‘G35’시리즈는 중증질환자인 내가 치료 과정에서 경험하는 육체적, 심리적 고통을 나의 신체 이미지를 활용하여 캔버스 화면 내 추상적 이미지 구성과 다양한 기법으로 표현하고, 이를 통해 자기 치유를 시도하는 작업이다.

현대사회는 인간의 수명이 100세를 넘어서는‘장수 혁명(longevity revolution)의 시대’ 라고도 불린다. 현대의학의 눈부신 발전 및 첨단 기술의 보급으로 현재 5세 연령 아이들의 절반 정도가 100세까지 살 가능성이 있다고 예상하는 시대지만 그럼에도 불구하고 여전히 현대의학으로 고칠 수 없는 난치병들이 남아 있다. 희귀난치성 질환은 같은 시기의 의학으로 치료가 어렵고 치료 조건이 한정적인 질병을 뜻한다. 나는 다발성경화증 환자로서 현실에서 내가 감당해야 할 어려움을 회피하기보다는 받아들이고 직면하는 긍정적인 태도를 가지고자 노력한다.

그 과정에서 나의 내면의 감정 상태와 극복 의지를 나의 신체 이미지를 중심으로 하여 캔버스 화면에 조형적으로 표현하고 그 작품 제작 과정 및 결과물을 통해 내적치유를 추구하고자 한다. 캔버스 화면 위에 빨간색으로 나 자신의 이미지를 그려 넣고 그 위에 흰색 계열의 색을 반복적으로 레이어를 쌓거나 물감을 흘리는 과정을 통해 붉은색 신체의 존재성을 불명확하게 만들면서 내면의 정서적 안정을 기대하고 억눌려 있던 감정의 표출을 시도한다.

본 논문에서는 나의 정신적, 육체적 고통이 작업을 진행하는 과정에서 치유되는 효과에 대해 연구한다. 이를 위해 희귀난치성질환자의 삶이 예술을 통해 어떻게 더 나아질 수 있는지에 대해 알아본다. 예술 작품을 통해 자신의 고통과 경험을 표현함으로써 나는 스스로의 정체성을 재확립한다. 이는 자기 이해를 돕고, 자존감을 높이며, 자기 수용의 과정을 촉진시킬 수 있다. 나의 작품을 보며 난치병을 가진 사람들뿐만 아니라 모든 환자가 자신의 아픔을 스스로 인식하고 인정하면서 치유하는 계기가 되기를 바란다. 더불어 논문을 통해 이러한 예술적 승화의 과정에 대해 고찰하고 예술적 치유에 대한 새로운 시각을 제시한다. 그리고 희귀난치성질환자들에 대한 사회적 관심과 연대를 불러일으키는 계기가 되길 바란다. 나 자신에게는 작품 제작 과정에서 내가 진행한 표현적 연구 방식의 발전을 도모하고 한계를 극복하길 기대한다.|This paper describes the content and formative research process of my 'G35' series, which I have worked on from 2022 to 2024. The 'G35' series represents an attempt at self-healing, expressing the physical and psychological pain I experience as a severely ill patient undergoing treatment by using abstract compositions and various techniques on canvas based on images of my body.

Modern society is often referred to as the 'longevity revolution,' an era where human life expectancy exceeds 100 years. Due to remarkable advances in modern medicine and the proliferation of cutting-edge technology, it is expected that approximately half of today's five-year-olds will live to be 100 years old. However, there remain many rare intractable diseases that are difficult to treat with contemporary medical practices and have limited treatment options. As a patient with multiple sclerosis, I strive to maintain a positive attitude by accepting and confronting the challenges I must face rather than avoiding them.

In this process, I aim to pursue inner healing by expressing my emotional state and will to overcome my condition through formative representation on canvas, centered on images of my body. By painting my own image in red on the canvas and repeatedly layering or dripping white paint over it, I obscure the presence of my red body, seeking emotional stability and attempting to express suppressed emotions.

This paper studies the healing effect that occured during the course of my work. It examines how the lives of patients with rare intractable diseases can be improved through art. Expressing my pain and experiences through my artwork, aids in self-understanding, boosts self-esteem, and promotes self-acceptance, thus reaffirming my identity. I hope that my work will not only help patients with intractable diseases, but all patients to recognize and acknowledge their pain, providing an opportunity for healing. Furthermore, through this paper, I reflect on the process of artistic sublimation and present a new perspective on artistic healing. I also hope to raise social awareness and solidarity regarding rare intractable diseases. For myself, I expect this to help me develop my expressive research methods and overcome limitations in my artistic practice.
