색채의 층을 통한 식물이미지 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 색채의 층을 통한 식물이미지 연구를 주제로 2016년‘실제, 실체’라는 석사 학위 청구 전시의 작품부터 2020년까지의 작업을 바탕으로 기술되었다. 본인은 식물이 성장하며 나타나는 색의 그라데이션(gradation)에 주목해 작업의 한 형식으로 재해석해 보았다. 식물은 싹을 틔우고 자라나 꽃이나 열매를 맺으며 시들고 말라간다. 이러한 식물의 변화가 본인에게 있어서 작업의 모티브가 되었고 식물이 가지고 있는 본연의 색에 대해 더 심도 있게 관찰하게 되었다. 색은 시각을 통해 받아들여지고 인지되며 여러 가지 감정을 느끼게 한다. 그 중 초록은 자연과 순수를 상징하며 생명과 에너지, 성장 등을 뜻한다. 이처럼 색은 시대와 문화마다 가진 의미가 달라질 수도 있지만, 우리 삶의 모든 측면에 스며들어 일상을 장식한다. 이렇게 색이 가진 상징성을 통해 감정과 기억을 전달할 수 있는 것이다. 본인은 이러한 식물이 가진 초록의 색채를 작업으로 재해석하기 위해 자연을 느낀 그대로 사진에 담은 후 포토샵(photo shop)을 이용해 식물에 담긴 그라데이션을 하나의 레이어로 구분 지었다. 그 후 배접을 이용해 평면의 화면위에 레이어를 한 겹씩 쌓아올리며 작업을 완성시켰다. 본인은 이런 과정을 단순한 심미적 식물의 아름다움이 아닌 각자의 색이 가진 고유성과 특성을 살려 보여주는 것을 중점으로 두고자 하였다. 따라서, 색채의 층을 통한 식물 이미지 연구는 단면적인 식물의 실제를 보는 것이 아니라 그 내면까지 들여다보면 훨씬 많은 것들을 마주할 수 있으며 그 색을 통해 시각적으로 즐거움 또는 위로가 된다는 것을 상기시켜 주는 계기가 되었다.| This dissertation is based on art works ranging from the master’s degree requirement exhibition ‘Reality, Substance’ in 2016, and its subsequent works up to 2020. Plants in general go through a life cycle of germination, growth, flowering, fruiting, and in the end wilting. The observation of changes that accompany each stage became an inspiration for creative work, and led to a deeper exploration into the essence of natural colors that plants possess. Consequently, I have sought to reinterpret these natural colors in a form of art, where raw gradation of colors are reborn with the addition of human emotions. Though perceived through the eye, colors are ultimately interpreted by the brain. Here, mere spectrums of light are transformed into a multitude of emotions and meanings. For instance, the color green is typically known to signify values such as nature and its purity, or the energy of life and growth. Like this, colors permeate into every aspect of our lives, adorning every day with various vibes. In order to share personal emotions and memories with the world through colors, I found Photoshop to be the best method to utilize the inherent symbolism that colors bear. After taking a photograph of nature in a way that best represents my personal sensation, I divided the natural gradation of plants into separate layers through Photoshop. Then, I reconstructed the image by restacking the multiple layers back onto a flat plane. Through this process of personal reinterpretation, I focused not on revealing the apparent aesthetic appeal of the plant itself, but rather the characteristics and the identity of individual colors that comprise it. In conclusion, “The Study on Plant Images through Color Layers” led to the realization that once observed with the intention to see the “substance” of nature, plants offer so much more than their mere exteriors. In a modern society that is so demanding and perhaps even suffocating, nature’s soothing array of colors provide more than just visual delight. It embraces us with comfort, giving consolation to those exhausted.
