사회교과서 삽화에 나타난 시민사회단체 활동 분석

Abstract

본 연구는 중학교와 고등학교 사회 교과서 삽화에 나타난 시민사회단체 활동 유형과 분야에 대해 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 청소년들이 균형 있는 시각으로 시민사회단체 활동을 바라보고 적극적으로 시민사회단체 활동에 참여할 수 있도록 하기 위해서는 학교 교육의 역할이 중요하며, 그 중에서도 교과서는 학생들의 학습활동의 주된 자료임으로 매우 중요하다고 할 수 있다. 특히 시민사회단체 활동은 행위적 모습이기 때문에 글로써 서술된 내용을 살펴보기 보다는 삽화를 통해 살펴 볼 필요성이 있다. 왜냐하면 학생들이 교과서를 볼 때 내용보다는 삽화를 먼저 본다고 해도 과언이 아닐 만큼 삽화의 시각적 효과는 매우 크며, 그만큼 학생들에게 암묵적으로 많은 영향을 미치기 때문이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 교과서 삽화를 중심으로 시민사회단체 활동을 살펴보았는데, 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 시민사회단체 활동 유형을 살펴본 결과, 시위의 비중이 가장 높은 것을 알 수 있다. 전체 삽화 343개 중 시위가 57.4%를 차지하고 있으며, 교육 · 계몽활동 15.5%, 공청회 · 기자회견 11.3%, 서명운동 6.7%, 정부감시활동 4.7%, 봉사활동 3.2%, 중재활동 1.2%였다. 그리고 사회교과서 전반적으로는 다양한 활동을 제시하고 있었지만 특정 과목에서는 중재활동 등의 몇 가지 활동 유형은 살펴볼 수 없었다. 둘째, 시민사회단체 활동 분야를 살펴보면, 사회교과서는 각각의 분야를 균등하게 제시하지 못하고 있다. 중 · 고등학교 사회 교과서는 ‘사회적 이슈 ’와 ‘정치적 이슈’를 비슷한 비중으로 비교적 높게 제시하고 있는데 반해, 상대적으로 ‘실생활 이슈’는 소홀히 하고 있었다. 셋째, 국민공통과정 · 심화선택과정별로 살펴보면, 국민공통과정은 학년이 올라갈수록 높은 비중으로 차지하고 있는 ‘시위’에 관한 삽화가 증가 추세를 보이는데 반해, ‘교육 · 계몽활동’에 관한 삽화나 ‘실생활 이슈’에 관한 삽화는 감소 추세에 있었다. 그리고 심화선택과정에서는 시민사회단체 활동 삽화가 정치 교과서에 밀집되어 있어 학생들에게 시민사회단체 활동은 정치적 영역에서만 이루어지는 것이라는 잘못된 인식을 심어줄 우려가 있다. 위와 같이 나타난 결과를 통해 얻을 수 있는 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 시민사회단체 활동 유형 삽화는 전반적으로 ‘시위’에 집중되어 있으며 특정 과목에서는 일부 활동을 제시하지 않고 있는데 이는 학생들에게 시민사회단체 활동은 시위에 한정되어 있는 것처럼 인식시킬 수 있다. 따라서 사회 교과서는 모든 과목에서 다양한 시민사회단체 활동 유형 삽화를 제시하도록 노력해야 하며, 각각의 활동 유형의 삽화도 균형을 이룰 수 있도록 개선되어야 할 것이다. 둘째, 실생활 이슈와 관련된 시민사회단체 활동 삽화가 보다 비중 있게 제시되어야 한다고 본다. 실생활 이슈는 주위에서 쉽게 접할 수 있는 내용이어서 학생들이 성인이 되었을 때 더 쉽게 시민사회단체 활동에 참여할 수 있도록 하는 긍정적인 역할을 하고 있으므로 사회 교과서는 실생활 이슈에 관한 삽화를 증가시켜야 할 것이다. 셋째, 시민사회단체 활동에 대한 올바른 시각을 갖고 참여하도록 학생들을 교육시키기 위해 국민공통과정 · 심화선택과정별 균형을 맞추어야 한다. 즉, 시민사회단체 활동 유형과 분야 그 자체의 균형뿐 아니라 국민공통과정의 학년별 균형 또한 체계적으로 구성하여 학생들에게 균형 있는 시각을 심어주도록 해야 한다.|The paper seeks to explore activity types and fields of the civil society organization as described in middle school and high school's social studies textbook illustrations. In order to enable adolescents to have balanced view of activities of the civil society organization and to let them to actively participate in such activities, school education can be said to play a vital role, and among it, the textbook is a major material, very important for student's lesson activity. Particularly, because activities of the civil society organization are performance-based, there is a need for describing them through illustrations rather than writing in words. It is because illustration's visual effects are huge in that it's no wonder that students first look at the illustrations before the content when reading textbooks, and they tacitly influence students that much. Therefore, the paper explored activities of the civil society organization centering on textbook illustrations, and main results of the study are as follows. First, as a result of examining activity types of the civil society organization, the paper found that the proportion of demonstrations was the highest. Among the total of 343 illustrations, demonstrations constituted 57.4%, education · enlightenment activity constituted 15.5%, public hearing · press conference constituted 11.3%, signing activity constituted 6.7%, government watch activity constituted 4.7%, volunteer activity constituted 3.2%, and mediating activity constituted 1.2%. Furthermore, overall, social studies textbook stated various activities but in certain subjects, some types of activities, such as mediating activity, were not stated. Second, looking at field of activity of the civil society organization, social studies textbook doesn't equally suggest each field. Unlike in middle and high school social studies textbook, which states 'social issues' and 'political issues' in similar high proportions, ‥real-life issues' are treated relatively less. Third, looking at each national common curriculum · advanced elective, in national common curriculum, illustrations on 'demonstration', which constitutes higher proportion as year level gets higher, showed an increasing trend, while illustrations on 'education · enlightenment activity' or 'real-life issues' were on a decreasing trend. Further, in advanced elective, illustrations on the civil society organization activities were concentrated in political science textbook, which may pose as a danger of incorrect understanding in which activities of the civil society organization are carried out only within a political sphere. Implications based on the results mentioned above are as follows. First, illustrations of activity type of the civil society organization are generally concentrated in 'demonstrations' and in certain subjects don't mention certain activities; and because of this, this may present an understanding to students that the activities of civil society groups are limited to demonstrations. Therefore, social studies textbook must try to present illustrations of various types of activities that civil society groups do in all subjects, and improvements must be made in order for illustrations of each type of activities to be incorporated equally. Second, illustrations of the civil society organization activities related to real-life issues must be incorporated with more emphasis. Because real-life issues are issues that are easy to come across, they play a positive role in which to enable students to more easily participate in the civil society organization activities when they grow to be adults, and social studies textbook must increase illustrations related to real-life issues. Third, in order to educate students to participate with proper perception on activities of the civil society organization, the balance between national common curriculum · advanced elective must be equalized. That is, one must not only balance between types and fields themselves of activities of the civil society organization, but also equally and systemically organize national common curriculum per year level, so that one must try to ingrain balanced view to students.
