빛에 의한 인위적인 공간 표현연구

Abstract

본 논문은 2019년‘스치는 낮과 밤’이라는 석사 학위 청구전시를 바탕으로 시간의 흐름에 따라 달라지는 빛의 성질을 통해 일상 풍경에서 나타나는 인위적인 공간을 관찰하고 연구한 것으로 기술되었다. 현대 사회의 풍경 속에서 반복적인 형태나 익숙해진 공간은 관심 있게 보려고 하지 않는다. 이러한 공간을 본인의 시각으로 바라봤을 때 낯설게 느끼게 되어, 이에 따라 빛의 성질과 범위에 달라지는 형태에 대해 집중적으로 포착, 연구하게 되었다. 빛의 성질은 크게 두 가지로 구분되는데, 자연적인 빛과 인위적인 빛으로 시간의 순환에 따라 낮과 밤의 공간이 형성되면서 나타난다. 자연적인 빛은 모든 공간을 비추게 되면서 개인이 바라보는 시점에 따라 넓은 범위로 관찰할 수 있게 되고, 인위적인 빛은 인간의 필요에 의해 위치하여 선택적인 범위의 공간을 비추게 된다. 빛을 통해 비친 공간은 자연물과 인공물의 형태가 공존하며 반복적으로 등장하게 되는데, 이러한 형태들을 통해서 인위적인 공간이 형성되는 것이다. 본인은 선택된 시야 안에서 관찰하게 된 인위적 공간의 존재 의미에 대한 의문과 빛에 따른 형태에 대한 감정과 태도를 작업으로 나타내려고 하였다. 빛에 따라 비친 공간 안에서 인물들을 통해 이야기를 형성하고 화면을 재구성하게 되었고, 빛에 영향을 받아 나타나는 요소들을 이용하여 대비되는 효과를 작품에 표현하려고 하였다. 그 과정에서 나타나는 구성과 표현 방식에 대해 작품을 통해서 설명해 보았다.|This dissertation is based on the master’s degree requirement exhibition ‘Crossing Day and Night’ in 2019, accompanied by observation and study of everyday scenes of artificial spaces that change with the change in light due to the flux of time. The monotonous modern society leaves no room for an individual to pay attention to repetitive patterns and familiar spaces. However, the truth is that once one stops to carefully observe the surrounding objects and spaces, it easily become clear that the world is actually ever-changing. I have found the change in light particularly interesting, for what seemed at once to be so ordinary can suddenly become surprisingly obscure and different, even by the slightest change in the source of light and the boundary it sets. In our everyday life, we come across two distinct types of light that differ in their origin. One is light from a natural source, namely the sun, and the other is light from an artificial source. Usually, natural light dominates the day, while artificial lights replace its absence at night. A major contrasting characteristic between the two is that natural light shines upon space without limit, while artificial light selectively illuminates a limited space with a purpose that corresponds to man’s needs. In consequence, in the presence of natural light, the perception of space is only limited by one‘s viewpoint and thus enables observation at a wide scale. Without it on the other hand, we are left only with artificial light, and therefore are restricted by the boundaries it sets. Within these boundaries, objects both natural and artificial coexist, appearing one after the other, thereby forming a space both artificial and natural. Through my work, I have sought to capture such interesting conditions and convey the personal emotions and sensations that arose as I observed them. By the beams of light, the people in the painting become characters of an enigmatic story, while the surrounding space becomes the stage providing contrasting illumination as if by a spotlight.
