현재 우리 사회는 세계화․국제화로의 진입과 함께 국제결혼의 증가라는 현상 하에 다양한 인종과 문화가 혼재되어 다문화 사회로의 급격한 변화가 이루어지고 있다. 그동안 우리나라는 단일민족 우위론을 바탕으로 유구한 역사와 전통을 강조하고 자기 민족 중심의 교육을 해왔다. 그 결과 아직도 외국 문화와 외국인 이주민에 대한 시각이 배타적이고 부정적이다. 이것은 우리 사회가 다문화의 다양성에 대한 포괄적 이해와 교육이 부족한 상태에서 다문화 사회로 진입하였기 때문이다. 이제 외국인이 110만 명 이상이 거주하는 우리나라는 세계화․정보화․문화화 속에서 다른 인종에 대한 고정관념과 편견을 극복하고 세계의 사람들과 함께 공존할 수 있는 문화 다원주의적 의식을 길러 나가야 한다. 그리고 다인종적, 다문화적 사고와 상호존중과 배려가 교육의 중요한 과제로 떠오르고 있는 이 시기에 우리는 교육적으로도 사회적으로도 실천적이고 다각적인 다문화교육이 필요하다. 이에 이 연구를 통해 학생들이 다문화사회를 이해하고 각기 다른 문화 속에서 서로의 문화를 존중함과 동시에 문화적 정체성을 갖도록 효과적인 다문화교육의 방법을 모색하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 다문화사회를 이해하기 위한 방법으로서 학습자들이 생활 주변에서 친근하게 접할 수 있는 북 아트(Book Arts)를 활용한 활동을 중심으로 효과적인 지도 방안을 구안하는데 목적을 두고 다음과 같이 논문을 구성하였다. 서론에서는 다문화교육에 대한 연구의 필요성과 목적, 연구방법에 대해 서술하고, 제Ⅱ장에서는 다문화사회를 이해할 수 있는 전반적인 내용과 다문화 사회에 맞는 교육의 중요성과 교육적 가치를 고찰하였다. 제Ⅲ장에서는 다양한 재료와 표현기법을 통해서 자기의 생각, 느낌, 이야기들을 글과 그림으로 표현하며 다양한 형태의 독창적인 예술 책을 만드는 활동인 북 아트에 대하여 살펴보고, 다문화사회에 대한 이해를 돕는 방안으로써 북 아트를 제작해 볼 수 있도록 유도하고 있다. 제Ⅳ장에서는 우리나라와 외국의 북 아트 교육을 통해 북 아트가 교육에 어떻게 적용되고 있는지를 살펴보고, 북 아트 활동이 주는 교육적 효과와 북 아트 수업과정에서의 교사의 역할을 봄으로써 북 아트 수업의 교육적 의의를 알 수 있다. 제Ⅴ장에서는 지금까지의 내용을 바탕으로 다문화사회를 이해하며, 다른 나라의 문화를 접해 볼 수 있는 북 아트를 활용한 교수․학습프로그램을 제시하였다. 제Ⅵ장 결론에서는 본 연구를 통해 얻은 고찰결과를 토대로 다문화교육의 활성화 방안을 제언하고, 더불어 다문화교육을 통해 학생들이 우리와 다른 타인에 대해 알아가며 그들의 문화와 생각을 이해하고 인정함으로써 서로의 차이를 존중하는 안목과 태도를 함양할 수 있다는 기대감을 나타내고 있다.|ABSTRACT

A Study of Art Education Program Using Books Arts to Understand Multiculturalism

At present our society is rapidly changing into a multicultural society due to an increase in international marriages, globalization and internationalization. This creates a mix of diverse races and cultures. For a long time Korea has emphasized its long history and tradition based on a homogeneous nationalism and has conducted its own ethnic-oriented education. As a result the average Korean’s view of foreign cultures and foreign residents is still exclusive and negative. This is because Korean society has entered into a multicultural era under which inclusive understanding of, and education on, multicultural diversity is insufficient. Currentlythere are more than 1.1 million foreign residents living in Korea. Thus Koreaneeds to overcome the spirit of homogenous nationalism and prejudice against other ethnic groups in this global, informational and cultural society. Korea needs to nurture cultural pluralism where Koreans can co-exist with other peoples from around the world. At this time we are developing multi-ethnic and multicultural thinking. Mutual respect and consideration are rising as an important task of education but we need a practical and multi-angled multicultural education both in school and society. In this regard, this paper tries to investigate an effective multicultural education in order to help students understand how to live in a multicultural society and respect each others’cultures despite their differences while simultaneously helping everyone develop a cultural identity. The goal of this paper is to find an effective teaching plan focusing on activities using book arts to which learners can have an easy access in their surroundings as a way to understand multicultural society. This paper is composed as follows: The introduction lays outthe necessity, goal and methodology of this research. Chapter II investigates the overall content on how to understand a multicultural society and explains the importance and value of an education that suits a multicultural society. Chapter III looks into book arts activitiesin which people express their ideas, feelings and stories by writing and drawing using various materials and techniques and thereby creates a variety of unique artists’books. It encourages students to produce artists’ books as a way to help them understand multicultural society. Chapter IV looks into how book arts have been applied to education by investigatingKorean and foreign book arts education. It investigates the educational effects of book arts activities and the teacher’s rolein book arts classes. By so doing it finds the educational meaning of book arts classes. Based on the studies above, chapter V suggests a teaching and learning program using book arts through which students can understand a multicultural society and have some contact with other countries’ cultures. The concluding chapter VI suggests a plan to initiate a multicultural education based on the investigative resultsof this study. It is expected that through multicultural education students will get to know other people from different cultural backgrounds and understand and recognize their cultures and ideas. By doing this they can nurture views and attitudes that respect the differences of others.
