Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present a method to enhance the understanding of the editorial scores meant for pianist. According to the editors, many different notated signs could be found including slur, dynamic marks, pedal, even the notes itselves. Pianist should study the editorial scores because scores are important data for the performers to use in interpreting the music and provide advice while the music is played.

This paper is a study on the editorial score of <Piano Sonata Op. 2, No. 2> an early work of 32 Beethoven piano sonata. Beethoven's Piano Sonata Op. 2 contains three piano sonata works and was published as a single work number. These three piano sonatas were dedicated to Haydn and made Beethoven composer one of the greatest composers of the time. Chapter 1 aims to help understand Beethoven’s political and social situation at that the time when his piano sonata Op. 2, No. 2 was made. Chapter 2 presents the overall composition of Beethoven's piano sonata Op. 2, No. 2 and examines the first movement more closely. In Chapter 3 are enumerated all editorial scores of Beethoven's piano sonata Op. 2, No. 2 and organized the characteristics. Chapter 4, focuses on Schnabel’s edition through comparison with the urtext classified into articulation, pedaling, tempo, and dynamic.
