물의 속성을 이용한 무위적 회화 실험 연구

Abstract

기후위기의 시대, 인간과 자연의 공존에 대한 관심은 더욱 커지고 있다. 코로나 19 팬데믹 원인 가운데 하나를 산림의 파괴로 보기도 한다. 아이러니하게도 팬데믹으로 인해 인간의 외부 활동이 줄자, 공기의 질이 좋아졌다는 연구가 보고된 바 있다. 이러한 보고를 통해 분명히 알 수 있는 것은 인간의 활동이 환경과 자연에 지대한 영향을 주고 있다는 점이다. 기후변화 및 환경에 관심이 있는 본 연구자는 환경과 자연을 주제로 작업을 시도해 보고자 하였다. 더 나아가 인간과 자연의 지속가능한 공존을 위해서는 자연의 본성을 거스르지 않고 따르는 삶의 태도를 실천해야 해야 하며, 이를 작업의 과정을 통해 보여주고자 하였다. 본 연구는 이러한 문제의식에서 출발하였으며, 이를 도가의 무위사상에서 찾고자 하였다.

도가사상(道家思想)의 대가인 노자(老子)는 자연이 스스로 그러해야 함을 강조하였는데, 이것을 ‘무위(無爲)’라고 한다. 다시 말해 자연이 자연 모습 그대로 존재하기 위해서는 무위를 실천해야 하는 것이다. 본 연구자는 작업의 주요 재료가 되는 물의 속성을 통해 자연의 존재성을 인정하고, 있는 그대로 표현하고자 하는 태도를 취하였으며, 이는 노자의 무위사상에 나타난 자연에 대한 무위적 태도와 맞닿아 있음을 보여주고자 하였다. 본 연구자의 무위적 태도는 다음의 측면에서 엿볼 수 있다. 첫째, 인위적인 작가성을 배제했다는 점. 둘째, 작품의 재료로 사용된 물이 자연 그대로의 속성으로 드러난다는 점. 마지막으로 작품 그 자체의 주체성을 인정한다는 점이다. 이러한 무위적 태도의 특징은 미니멀리즘과 모노하의 작업 태도에서 그 근거를 찾을 수 있다. 그렇다면 무위적 태도를 보여줄 수 있는 작업 재료에는 무엇이 있을까? 여러 재료가 있지만 본 연구자는 ‘물’이 가장 적합하다고 판단하였다. 따라서 물을 이용해 여러 실험을 거듭하며 물의 속성을 발견하고 발견한 속성을 통해 작업 연구를 진행하였다. 본 논문에서는 본 연구자가 작품을 통해 발견한 물의 속성에 대해 서술하였으며, 본 연구자의 개인전을 중심으로 작품 내용을 분석하였다. <경계가 희미해>에서는 자연 세계에는 인간이 규정한 개념으로 존재하지 않음에 주목한다. 물을 이용하여 실험한 작품은 ‘자연스러움’을 보여준다. <막간을 이용하여: Intermission>에서는 조금 더 직접적으로 개념을 격파시키려는 시도를 보여준다. 명명되어 있는 색을 잉크를 번지게 하여 색의 스펙트럼을 보여주거나 선명히 인쇄된 사진을 번지게 하여 흐릿하게 만드는 작업 등을 보여준다. 이는 개념과 개념 사이, 즉 개념으로 정리되지 않은 세계에 주목하고자 한다. 석사학위청구전 <수중진담 水中眞談>에서는 물의 속성을 적극적으로 보여주고자 하였다. 현재까지 진행하였던 다양한 실험 작업을 통해 발견한 물의 속성(아래로 흐름, 종이에 번짐, 안료를 나름 등)을 확인할 수 있다.

결론적으로, 본 연구는 인간과 자연의 공존을 무위적 삶의 태도에서 바라보고자 하였으며, 이를 본 연구자의 작품에 드러난 무위적 표현기법을 통해 보여주고자 하였다.| In an era of climate crisis, the coexistence of humans and nature is becoming increasingly important. Deforestation is seen as one of the causes of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ironically, as the pandemic reduced human activity outside, studies have reported that air quality improved. What is clear from these reports is that human activity is having a profound impact on the environment and nature. This researcher, who is interested in climate change and the environment, try to work on the topic of environment and nature. Furthermore, for the sustainable coexistence of humans and nature, it is necessary to practice an attitude of life that follows the nature of nature instead of going against it, and the researcher tries to show this through the process of my work. This research starts with this problem and sought to find the solution in Taoist thought.

Lao Tzu, a master of Taoist thought, emphasized that nature should be as it is, which is called 'Actionless Action(Wu Wei)'. In other words, in order for nature to exist as it is, it must practice the Actionless Action. This researcher acknowledges the existence of nature through the properties of water, which is the main material of the work, and takes the attitude of expressing it as it is, which is in line with the atavistic attitude towards nature shown in Lao Tzu's atavistic thought. This researcher's attitude can be seen in the following aspects. First, artificial intervention is excluded. Second, the water used as a material in the work is revealed as a natural property. Lastly, it recognizes the subjectivity of the work itself. These characteristics of the Actionless Action can be traced back to the work of minimalism and mono-ha. So, what are the materials that can show this attitude? There are many materials, but the researcher found ‘The Water’ to be the most suitable. Therefore, the researcher conducts several experiments with water to discover its properties and uses the discovered properties to conduct his work. In this paper, the researcher describes the properties of water that the researcher discovers through my work, and analyze the contents of my work, focusing on the researcher’s solo exhibition. In <Boundaries are Blurred>, the artist draws attention to the fact that the natural world does not exist as a concept defined by humans. The work, which was experimented with water, shows 'naturalness'. <In Intermission>, the researcher attempts to subvert concepts more directly. Named colors are smeared with ink to show the spectrum of colors, or clear photographs are smeared to make them blurry. These works seek to draw attention to the world between concepts and concepts, a world that is not organized by concepts. In his master's thesis, "The properties of water(SooJoongJinDam)" the researcher tries to actively show the properties of water. It can see the properties of water (flowing downward, smearing on paper, absorbing pigments, etc.) that the researcher discovers through various experimental works.

In conclusion, the researcher aims to look at the coexistence of humans and nature from an attitude of the Actionless Action, and to show this through the Actionless Action expression techniques revealed in this researcher's work.
