문둥이 처녀담 연구

Abstract

근대에 이르기까지 문둥병은 불치의 유전병으로 여겨졌다. 신체가 훼손되며 긴 투병 기간을 갖는 특징으로 인해 문둥이는 대부분의 문화권에서 소외와 천대의 낙인으로 인식되었다. 문둥병의 특성에 이같은 사회적인 인식이 반영되어 많은 문학 작품이 발생하였는데, 설화도 예외는 아니어서 『구비문학대계』에는 60여 편에 이르는 문둥이담이 수록되어 있다. 그러나 문둥이담을 위한 분류 항목조차 전무한 실정이다. 2장에서는 문둥병이 독립된 질병으로 인지되기 시작한 조선시대의 역사적 · 의학적 자료를 살펴보았다. 본격적인 논의에 앞서 문둥병에 관한 사회적 인식을 알아보고 이것이 문둥이담에 어떤 방식으로 적용되는지를 고찰하기 위함이다. 3장에서는 『구비문학대계』에 수록된 문둥이담의 내용을 종합하여 문둥병 · 문둥병의 치유 · 치유자와의 결연 · 치유자에 대한 보은 등의 네 가지 모티프를 추출하고 이들의 결합을 통해 문둥이담의 양상을 다섯 가지로 분류하였다. 이를 통해 문둥이 처녀담은 작품에 등장하는 문둥이의 성별의 차이를 떠나 문둥이담의 핵심 구조를 고루 갖추며 다른 이야기와 변별되는 뚜렷한 주제의식을 갖는다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 문둥이 처녀담은 결핍이 있는 남자 주인공이 우연히 문둥이 처녀와 만나 인연을 맺고 문둥병을 치유해준다. 병이 나은 처녀는 떨어져 있던 가족들과 상봉하고 남자 주인공의 사회적, 경제적 지위를 상승시키는 보은을 통해 결핍을 해소시킨다는 내용으로 이루어졌다. 4장에서는 문둥이 처녀담을 결연과 치유, 보은의 세 가지 틀을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 서사 전개는 문둥이 처녀와 남자 주인공의 절연 위기의 극복 유무에 유기적으로 연계되어 있다. 남자 주인공의 직업, 문둥이 처녀와의 결연 장소, 치유 음식의 제공, 가족 상봉 과정, 보은 양상 등 서사 단락 전반에 고루 영향을 끼치기 때문이다. 문둥이 처녀담은 남자 주인공의 선행이 계기가 되어 문둥병이 치유되며, 이를 매개로 남자 주인공의 지위 상승이 일어난다. 여기에는 신분 계층의 상하 이동이 이루어지고 부유함이 또 하나의 중요한 가치로 등장하는 조선 후기의 시대상이 담겨 있다. 5장에서는 문둥이 처녀담과 긴밀한 관계를 맺고 있는 국문 소설 「여선담전」을 다룸으로써 문둥이 모티프가 오랜 생명력을 갖고 꾸준히 향유 · 전승되었음을 확인하였다. 또한 설화의 범주인 문둥이담이 통과제의적 성격을 갖고 있는 치유담을 위주로 향유되었지만, 소설 「여선담전」은 문둥병이 나은 처녀의 보은담을 중심으로 확장되어 설화에서 소설로의 이행 과정에서 드러난 독자층 인식 변화를 엿볼 수 있었다. 결론에서는 이상의 논의를 통해 본 논문이 규명하고자 했던 문둥이 처녀담의 형성 배경이 된 사회적 인식과 존재 양상, 문학적인 의의와 소설로의 변이를 요약 정리하였다.|Until modern times, leprosy had been incurable, damaging the body. Hence, lepers had been equated with alienated and contemptuous people, regardless of East and West. This study was the first attempt to discuss a maid leper tale borrowing such an intense symbolism from lepers. To this end, the researcher reviewed 'The Legendary Traditional Literature Collection' and thereby, identified about 60 tales about lepers and then, classified them according to four motives: leprosy, treatment of leprosy, affiliation between leper and curer and leper's requital. Thereupon, the researcher examined the historical and medical literature during Chosun dynasty when leprosy began to be perceived as an independent disease, and thereby, determined the social perception of the disease and its effects on leper tales. The Maid Leper Tale possesses the core structures of leper's tales evenly just beyond the sexual discrimination, while showing some unique theme different from other tales. In that tale, a poor male character happens to meed a maid leper, and affiliates himself with her and cures her. The maid recovered from her disease meets her separated family members and repays the male character by helping him enhance his social and economic status only to relieve him of poverty. Such epic paragraphs consists of three parts: affiliation, treatment and requital. Those paragraphs are inter-connected with each other to unfold the story centering about surmounting of a disaffiliation crisis. The male character does a good conduct for the maid, and as a result, the maid is recovered from the disease, and his status rises. The tale metaphors the important values of Chosun dynasty or vertical upward rising of status and wealth. Anyway, The Maid Leper Tale has been vital enough to be handed down orally, which could be proved by the Korean language novel 'Yeosundam Story'. Unlike The Maid Leper Tale focused on treatment of leprosy, this novel is centered about requital, which seems to have reflected the contemporary readers' wish for wealth in the process shifting from tale to novel. Based on the discussion of the maid leper story, each leper story was examined in terms of its literary implications and potential for novel.
