동조성(同調性)에 관한 조형성 연구

Abstract

우리나라는 혈연을 바탕으로 형성된 가족 중심에서부터 사회의 각종 단체 및 집단에 이르기까지 집단적 성향이 뚜렷한 문화를 가지고 있다. 이러한 성향 속에서 집단적 규범, 관습이나 다른 사람의 반응에 일치하도록 행동하는 양식인 동조(同調)의식은 고밀도화 해가는 우리사회의 모둔 분야에 서 드러나고 있는 현상으로 각 개인들은 이러한 탈개인적 행동 속에서 심리적인 안정을 찾는다. 연구자 또한 유년기부터 이러한 성향이 다분했고, 동조를 통해 사회화의 과정을 거쳐왔다. 특히 동조적 특성은 사회의 가치체계나 체계유지적인 권력 현상과 맞물려 ‘순하다’, ‘착하다’라는 표현을 빌려 표현되기도 한다. 이러한 말들은 한 개체를 체제에 순응하게 하기 위한 가장 효과적인 방법으로 작용하고, 결과적으로 선의 가치체계를 이룬다. 이러한 동조성은 한 개체가 사회화하는 과정 중에 사회의 가치 체계나 이데올로기, 그리고 종교적인 덕목을 무의식적으로 내재화하도록 한다. 개체의 동조적 성향은 인간의 선천적인 육체적 능력의 결여(인간은 태어날 때부터 부모의 양육을 받아야만 한다) 때문에 생기는 것이지만, 동조성에 의해 가치체계를 내재화할 때 문제가 될 수 있는 것은 그것이 자칫 개인의 고유한 실존적 존재를 잃어버리게 할 수도 있다는 것이다. 특히 개인과 사회가 평화롭게 공존하던 전통사회에서 보다는, 소외와 물화, 그리고 상품화라는 다중고(多重苦)를 겪고 있는 현대 소비자본주의 사회에서 동조성은 불안한 모습을 띤다. 상품을 하나의 물신으로 여기고 자신의 욕망을 투자해 동조하는 현상이나, 종교적 이데올로기나 권력에 맹목적으로 자신을 동조하려 함으로써 존재의 결여와 불안을 해소하려는 부정적인 동조현상은 자본주의적 권력이 만들어낸 특수한 상황이라고 할 수 있다. 이에 본 논문은 본인의 작품에 대한 사회역사적, 조형적, 문맥적 탐구를 통해 독립적 주체성을 잃고 물질사회와 허위적 의식이 지배하는 사회에 맹목적으로 동조하는 비주체적인 탈개인화된 주체의 모습을 그려 보이고, 이에 대한 대안으로 소통과 해방의 계기가 가능한 것인지를 묻고자 하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 타인이 하는 것은 나도 해야만 된다는 동조의식은 우리사회의 모든 분야에서 드러나고 있는 현상으로 각 개인들은 이러한 동조적 행동 속에서 심리적 안정을 찾는다. 특히 본 논문은 2008년 “집단 속 개인의 동조성”을 주제로 전시된 본인의 작품과 그 이전 시기의 작품들에 대한 설명과 분석을 통해 위의 동조성의 문제에 접근하려 하였다.|Our country has apparently group-oriented culture such as family-centered system which roots in blood, a variety of social groups or communities. In this group-oriented culture, people tend to repress themselves and try to be in accord with group norms, custom or even others' reaction. Such a mode of behavior arises from the inclination toward 'Conformity'. Individuals in a group feel comfortable in the mode of 'being conformed' behavior based on such an inclination. On looking back into my childhood, I had a bent for 'conformity' to the normative atmosphere in groups, and I have also gone through the process of socialization in need for ' being conformed'. The feature of 'conformity' is often expressed as a word of praise, such as 'gentle', 'meek' or 'good', in combination with social value system. Those words are the most effective way to make an individual conformed with a group system, and futhermore come to be a part of the value systems of virtue. In addition, the inclination toward 'conformity' makes an individual, who is in the process of socialization, unconsciously internalize the values of group, ideologies and moral principles of religion, etc. Such an inclination stems from the lack of the human physical ability like a spontaneous ability to grow with no help ( human beings need parents' help from the moment when they are born). It is a kind of complementary measures to make up for the weak points. However, if it causes the individuality and subjectivity to be lost, it will be troubling that 'uniformed society' and 'blind mob psychology' occur. Specially, in the modern capitalistic society, in which a lot of social problems, including the estrangement, materialism and rash merchandising are widespread, the aspect of 'conformity' seems more unstable than in the traditional society in which an individual and society were in peaceful coexistence. The negative aspects of 'conformed' or 'blindly adapted' (for example, satisfying their desire for materials by apotheosizing goods ,and covering the lack of 'identity' and 'inborn ability' by blindly jumping themselves into political ideaologies ,religious beliefs or social power)are special phenomena made by capitalistic power. Therefore, through historic and figurative investigation, I am going to exhibit the non-subjective state of conformed individuals, who lose their independence and are blindly adapted to the society where materialism and false consciousness prevail. With the aim of the mutual understanding between individuals and a society, and the liberty of consciousness, I am going to directly access to the problem of 'Conformity' through my works on the subject of "The individual conformity in groups".
