대학수학능력시험 외국어영역 어휘의 코퍼스 분석

Abstract

본 연구는 대학수학능력시험 외국어영역에 나타나는 어휘에 관한 코퍼스 바탕 연구이다. 연구의 목적은 제7차 교육과정에서 제시한 기본어휘목록과 고등학교 영어교과서, EBS교재의 어휘를 대학수학능력시험의 어휘와 비교해보고, EBS교재와 기본어휘목록, 영어교과서의 어휘가 대학수학능력시험에 적절하게 반영되어 있는지 살펴보는데 있다. 지난 5년간 출제된 대학수학능력시험의 문제와 듣기 대본, 고등영어를 비롯한 심화선택과목을 포함한 영어교과서 4개 출판사 총 21권의 본문과 듣기대본, 3년간 발행된 EBS교재의 문제와 듣기대본을 코퍼스로 구축하여 Wordsmith 5.0을 이용하여 어휘를 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기본어휘목록에 제시된 어휘를 최근 5년간 대학수학능력시험 외국어영역에 나타난 어휘들과 비교해본 결과, 대학수학능력시험의 어휘 중 38%만이 기본어휘목록과 공통으로 사용된 것으로 나타났다. 기본어휘목록의 어휘만으로는 대학수학능력시험을 대비하기에 부족한 것으로 보인다. 둘째, 고등영어와 심화선택과목의 영어교과서에 사용된 어휘를 대학수학능력시험과 비교해보았을 때, 영어교과서와 대학수학능력시험에서 공통으로 사용된 단어의 개수는 평균 4,452개이다. 이는 약 90%에 해당하는 것으로, 많은 양의 영어교과서의 어휘가 대학수학능력시험 외국어영역에 포함된다고 볼 수 있다. 셋째, EBS교재의 어휘는 대학수학능력시험에 나타난 어휘와 약 99% 정도 공통적으로 사용되었다. EBS교재에서 나타나는 단어들을 잘 학습하면 대학수학능력시험을 대비하는데 어느 정도 효과적일 것으로 생각된다. 넷째, 대학수학능력시험에는 나타났지만 영어교과서와 EBS교재에 사용되지 않은 단어들을 대량 원어민 코퍼스인 BNC와 COCA의 상위 빈도수 단어들과 비교해봤을 때 거의 대부분의 단어들이 빈도수가 낮고, 상위 빈도수 어휘 순위가 낮았다. 이러한 결과에 따라 본 연구는 코퍼스를 바탕으로 한 대학수학능력시험과 영어교과서, EBS교재 코퍼스를 바탕으로 한 빈도수 높은 어휘목록의 추출을 통하여 빈도수가 높은 중요한 어휘들을 중심으로 학습자들이 어휘학습을 하도록 의견을 제시하였다. 또한 후속 연구에서 대학수학능력시험과 영어교과서, EBS교재에서 공통으로 나타나는 어휘목록을 추출해보는 것과 대량 원어민 코퍼스인 BNC, COCA에서 공통으로 나타나는 어휘나 공통으로 나타나지 않는 어휘를 비교해 보고 학습자들의 진정성 있는 영어 학습을 위해 도움을 줄 것이라고 하였다.| This study is a corpus-based analysis of English vocabulary used in the College Scholastic Ability Test administered in the years 2006-2010. The purpose of this study is to examine how many vocabularies of high school English textbooks and EBS textbooks have been used for CSAT. To achieve this purpose, the texts of five CSAT and twenty-one high school English textbooks, eighteen EBS textbooks were used to compile a corpus. This study is organized as follows. First, vocabularies used in the College Scholastic Ability Test were compared with the basic words of the 7th curriculum, and then the investigation to compare vocabularies of twenty-one high school English textbooks with those of CSAT was carried out. Then I measured vocabularies in CSAT against words of EBS textbooks. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the reflection rate of basic words of 7th curriculum which has been used in CSAT was 31%. This indicates that students should study various vocabularies in order to get a good grade at CSAT. Second, in regard of the reflection rate of vocabularies of high school English textbooks in CSAT, the average rate was 90%. It means studying all kinds of English textbooks in high school curriculum can help student to prepare for the College Scholastic Ability Test. Third, the reflection percentage of vocabularies used in EBS textbooks which has been used in CSAT is 99%. Most of vocabularies used in EBS textbooks mirrored vocabularies of CSAT. Based on the finding above, this study proposes that it would be an effective way to teach English if teachers set wordlists for vocabularies on the basis of word frequency.
