나뭇결을 살린 自然이미지의 心象 表現 硏究

Abstract

본 연구자의 조형의식은 ‘자연에 대한 사랑과 조화’를 중요시하는 한국인의 미의식을 바탕으로 하고 있다. 이러한 한국의 미의식에서는 순리를 그대로 살리는 아름다움이 우선시 되며, 자연과 하나가 되어 조화를 이룰 때 예술로써의 미적 가치는 극대화 되는 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 이렇듯 자연 그대로의 아름다움을 볼 수 있는 심미안(審美眼)을 가지고 그것을 살린 창작물을 생활 속으로 조화롭게 끌어들인 우리 조상들의 미의식은 본 작업에 기틀이 되었다. 아름다운 목리를 살려 만든 전통 목가구나 오래된 사찰의 단청과 벽화에서 볼 수 있는 세월이 흐르면서 부분적으로 형상이 없어지고 퇴색된 빛깔들이 나무의 색과 자연스럽게 어우러지면서 느껴지는 정서는 본 연구자에게 편안한 미감으로 다가왔고, 그러한 느낌을 표현하고자 고재(古材)를 재료로 하여 개인적인 시각으로 그려낸 서정적인 공간으로서의 정원을 형상화시킨 것이다. 본 작품 연구에서는 나무가 지니고 있는 고유의 결을 살리면서 내면세계를 인식하는 수단인 자연의 이미지와 접목시켜서 작품의 구도와 배치에 적절히 활용해 보고자 하였는데 이러한 의미에서 본 작업은 작품 속에서 표현된 자연이미지를 단순히 묘사를 한 다기 보다는 조형적인 형태와 의미를 자연으로 환원(還元)해가는 자연 친화적인 의미를 함축하고 있다. 나무를 매개체로 하여 손으로 다듬고, 파고, 그 위에 채색을 하는 일련의 과정을 통하여 나뭇결사이에 본 연구자의 감성을 주입시켜서 자연 그대로의 아름다움과 편안한 느낌을 유도하여 작품으로서 자연과 조화되고자 한다.|My thesis intends to deal with aesthetics of nature. The aesthetics of nature in my work is deeply associated with Korean traditional aesthetics, which tend to privilege aesthetic values and appreciation harmonious with nature. Korean traditional art has been constructed in close relation to the appreciation of the aesthetic beauty of nature. This naturalism deeply inscribed in Korean traditional art has thus emphasized aesthetics that can convey naturalized beauty and harmony with nature, thereby there is a profound belief that aesthetic value in any work of art can be maximized when it establishes ultimate harmony with nature. This aesthetic of nature has shaped the fundamental idea of my aesthetic sense, and I wanted to create a work that can express and appreciate this vibrant charm, allure of nature actively residing in our everyday life. It is this aesthetic of nature that inspired my work titled as "Garden of My Mind." In "Garden of my Mind," I wanted to show varied images of nature that I have observed and felt in daily life by visualizing various kinds of natural symbols and images on the surface of aged wood. Wood has often been known as one of the most difficult art materials to deal with. Despite this, wood is truly an excellent material in that humans can become easily familiar with and, more importantly, it is a material that contains the sheer ambiance of nature. In this sense, wood as an art material is quite adequate to my fundamental idea of aesthetics. With this material, I intended to create varied images of nature articulated with modern aesthetics emphasizing the quality of wood as an art material. Viewed from this perspective, my work can be seen not as a work of art, which tries to take only the simplified images and shapes of nature, and to show the relationship between nature and its images, but as the one, which tries to get closer to nature by actively utilizing varied symbols and shapes of nature. In my work, "Garden of My Mind,"I used old lumbers from the Korean traditional house as a major material. These lumbers contain traces of time and life. After the time-consuming, hand-crafting labors of cleaning, trimming, and carving, I painted on the surface, grains of wood. By doing this, I wanted to create images retaining fading, worn-out, and natural shapes and colors as well as a quality of depth that only familiar, aged materials can offer. It is such naturalized charm and familiarity of Korean traditional aesthetics that my work intends to discover. My thesis tries to examine the meanings of aesthetics in nature and to pursue the aesthetic value of liveliness and shapes that nature as an art object can offer. In doing this, I intend to not only have an opportunity of rethinking about the perspectives on painting, but also seek the new ways of creating images, which I will adopt in my future work.
