김요섭 시 연구

Abstract

김요섭은 1950년대에서 출발하여 1990년대에 이르기까지 40여 년 동안 꾸준한 시작활동을 통해 다양한 시적 방법을 모색한 시인이다. 하지만 그의 문학적 성취에 관한 논의는 주로 아동문학 분야에 국한되어 있다. 이는 그가 시로 등단하기 이전에 이미 14세의 이른 나이로 동화작가로서 데뷔했다는 독특한 이력 때문이기도 하지만 어느 한 편에 귀속시키기 힘든 다양한 시작 활동으로 인해 일관된 평가가 어렵기 때문이기도 하다. 김요섭의 시세계는 1950년대의 자장 안에서 비롯하여 일정한 성취를 이루어냈다는 점에서 전체적인 조망을 요한다. 이에 본 논문은 김요섭의 시세계를 전반적으로 조망하기 위해 그의 문학적 도정과 시작품 분석이라는 두 가지 축을 세운다. 이는 작품 분석과 함께 외적 자료를 참고하여 축소되었던 그의 시사적 위상을 제고하기 위한 방법적 기틀이라 할 수 있다. 김요섭의 시작 활동은 1950년대라는 시대적 상황과 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있으며, 따라서 이러한 연관성을 해명하는 일은 김요섭의 시세계를 이해하는 데 중요한 기제가 된다. 이를 위해 김요섭의 장편문학자전집 󰡔눈보라의 사상󰡕을 토대로 하여 시대적 상황과 그의 시작 활동을 재구성하고, 그가 일관되게 추구한 ‘빛’ 오브제의 단초를 발견한다. 다음으로 김요섭의 시작품을 분석하여 그가 시작 전반을 통해 추구하고자 했던 바를 해명한다. 김요섭의 시작 전반은 ‘이미지’의 역동적인 운용으로 이루어져 있으며, 대상이 지닌 즉물성과 사물성에 주목하여 이를 텍스트 안에서 다양한 모습으로 현시하고자 한다. 이는 30년대와 50년대의 한국 모더니즘 선상에서 파악이 가능하며 이미지즘의 발전적 극복 양상이라는 측면에서 그 의의를 살필 수 있다. 또한 제1시집과 제2시집을 묶어 초기로 나누고 제3시집부터 본격적으로 개진된 70～80년대의 시작 활동을 염두에 둘 때, 전쟁체험에서 비롯한 실존적 고민을 덜어내고 낙관적 인식에 도달하는 기제로써 사용된 ‘빛’의 전경화는 김요섭이 지닌 특징이라고 할 수 있다. 시작 전반에 넘쳐나는 역동적 이미지들을 ‘빛’ 이미지로 수렴시켜 효과적으로 시적 운용을 이루는 방법은 그 근간이 되는 낙관적 인식과 기독교적 세계관을 파악하는 데 중요한 지점이 된다. 또한 이러한 세계관을 바탕으로 근원을 탐색하고자 하는 다양한 시도는 그가 궁극적으로 도달하려 한 세계를 단적으로 보여준다. 한편 근원 모색이라는 형이상학적 주제를 보다 쉽게 보여주고자 하는 의도는 친숙한 설화의 모티브를 중심으로 한 이야기시의 형상화로 이어진다. 따라서 김요섭 시에서 이루어지는 이미지의 다양한 변주와 ‘빛’의 전경화, 그리고 기독교적 세계관과 근원 탐색은 기법과 내용이라는 두 가지 측면을 아우르며 발현된다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 방법론을 바탕으로 김요섭의 문학적 성취를 살피는 것은 1950년대 시문학사에서 그의 위상을 찾아주는 일이 된다. 당대의 사회적 배경 속에서 ‘시대적 우울’을 극복하는 양상으로 포착되는 김요섭의 시작 활동은 1950년대라는 시대적 상황과 분리시킬 수 없기 때문이다. 그 시기의 이념적 강압 속에서 김요섭은 자신만의 방향과 방법을 찾고자 노력한 시인으로, 독자적인 시세계를 구축했다는 점에서 그 의미가 있다.

It is necessary to reevaluate Kim Yo-seop as a poet who reached the high level of poetic achievement through various poetic activities. However, the discussion on his literary achievement has been limited mainly to children's literature. It is not only due to his unique career beginning as a writer of children's stories at an early age of 14 but also due to the difficulty of the consistent evaluation caused by the various poetic activities hard to be classified into a certain one. In this regard, this paper focuses on building the two axes for analyzing both his literary journey and poetry in order to look around Kim Yo-seop's overall poetic world. This is related to the methodological frame to enhance his reduced poetic status through analyzing his works and referring to the external data. Kim Yo-seop's poetic activities are closely related to the periodic situation such as 1950s, and therefore it becomes an important mechanism for understanding his poetic world to explain the correlation. In this regard, the paper concentrates on reconstructing his poetic activities and the periodic situation on the basis of Kim Yo-seop's autobiographic novel 󰡔A snowstorm's thought󰡕. The poems of the apre-guerre (postwar) generation start with unhappy history and the ruins of war. This feature is also true of Kim's case. The emotions featuring his first and second poetic books (anthologies) are existential despair and frustration derived from the war related scars. Thus, the image characterizing the early poems related to war experience is gloomy and unstable. However, his poetry secures his unique aesthetic standing with expressing the vivid and dynamic images in his early mid period keeping a certain distance from the war. Next, the paper focuses on clarifying what he had pursued through all his poetry by analyzing Kim Yo-seop's poetic works. Kim's overall poetry consists of the dynamic operation of 'image,' and tries to reveal it variously in the text with taking notice of its being realistic(sachlichkeit) and thingness. The feature can be grasped on the line of Korean modernism in 1930s and 1950s and its meaning can be found in the aspect of the developmental overcoming of imagism. When his first and second poetic books (anthologies) are thought to be included in his poetic early period, and if his poetic activities in 1970s and 1980s from the 3 anthology on are paid attention to, the foregrounding of 'light' used as a mechanism for reaching the optimistic perception after unburdening the agony derived from the war experience can be thought to be the feature of Kim's poetry. The method of his effective poetic operation converging the dynamic images into the 'light' image becomes the important point for grasping his optimistic perception and Christian view of the world as the basis. Also, the various attempts to search the root on the basis of such a view of the world show his pursuing world straightforwardly. Meanwhile, his intention to show the metaphysical subject of the root search more easily is connected to the formation of the narrative poetry focusing on the motive of the familiar stories. Thus, the variation of image, the foregrounding of 'light,' the Christian view of the world and the search of the origin which consist of Kim Yo-seop's poetry can be thought to put together the techniques and the contents and to be manifested. To study Kim's literary achievements on the basis of these methods will be to restore his real position in the history of poetic literature in 1950s.
