기억으로 재구성된 내면풍경 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 기억으로 재구성된 내면풍경을 주제로 2016년‘찰나의 순간을 빛나는 영원으로’라는 석사 학위 청구 전시의 작품부터 2019년까지의 작업을 바탕으로 기술되었다. 기억의 재구성에 대한 고민은 2016년에 진행한‘Landscape of Memory’ 시리즈에서 시작되었다. 의도하지 않아도 떠오르는 과거의 기억들은 연구자의 일상에서 시공간을 초월하여 나타나고 사라짐을 반복한다. 이러한 기억이 상기되는 순간 떠오르는 이미지와 함께 당시의 감정과 정서를 포착하여 재구성하는 방식으로 작업을 진행한다. 연구자에게 정서적 울림을 주는 유년시절의 제주풍경은 마르셀 프루스트의 장편 소설‘잃어버린 기억을 찾아서’에서 등장하는‘마들렌’과 같이 과거의 순간을 상기시켜주는 대상이다. 의식 밑으로 감춰져 있던 과거의 기억들과 감정들은 어떤 대상과의 우연한 만남으로 인해 무의식적으로 일어나 현재의‘나’와 과거의‘나’사이의 단절을 메우고 과거와 현재를 동시에 느끼게 하는 경험을 하게 한다. 연구자는 깊이 있는 작품 활동을 이어가기 위해 기억에 대한 이론 고찰과 함께 내면풍경과의 연결점을 찾기 위한 심리학적 접근이 필요했고, 연구 결과로 연구자의 작업을 보다 객관적인 시선으로 정리할 수 있는 시간을 가지게 되었다. 모든 존재들이 서서히 흐려지는 지속적인 시간의 흐름 속에서, 연구자는 기억을 단순히 지나가는 것에 그치지 않고 무의식 속에 잠재되어 있던 과거의 감정이나 사건을 통해 새로운 이미지로 재창조 하였다. 이러한 창조행위는 계속해서 과거를 회상하고 과거의 나와 소통하며, 본인이 인식하지 못했던 또 다른 자아를 통해 반성하는 시간을 가지고 그로 인해 계속해서 성장할 수 있는 계기를 만들고자 한다.|This dissertation is based upon the works ranging from the exhibition “From moment to shining eternity” in 2016 and its subsequent work up to 2019, all of which primarily focus on recreating inner sceneries as seen through the scope of personal memory. The exploration into the principles of memory reconstitution began with the series ‘Landscape of Memory’ in 2016. Flashes of the past continue to emerge and fade at random moments in life, often times unintended. It is as though they transcend our perception of time and space. Such memories are of course accompanied by mementos of images and personal sentiments, which are both to be captured and recreated on the canvas. Childhood memories of Jeju are what best resonate with me, just as the madeleine cake in Marcel Proust’s “In Search of Lost Time” inspires the narrator’s involuntary memories as a child. Driven by unexpected encounters with random objects, memories and emotions that were once submerged in the depths of unconsciousness are shot back up onto the surface of my keen awareness, On that platform, my past and present self meet; it is an extraordinary experience where my past and present identities cooperate to fill up the chasms of oblivion, enabling access to different moments of my life at the same time. In order to better portray such profound experiences, it was necessary to take a more psychological approach to such inner sceneries. By taking a strictly theoretical stance to take a step back and examine the fragments of memory, it was possible to find a converging point that granted objectivity and universality to my insights. As is with all existing matters, all things present cannot help but fade into the past. The significance of the endeavor to capture memories into images lies not only in the fact that it seeks to perpetuate what could be lost, but it can also gift them with a greater significance than they ever had before. By incorporating simple episodes of memories with emotions embedded deep within the unconsciousness, unique new values can be brought to life. Through continuous reminiscence and communication with my past self, I wish to keep striving to find different versions of myself, consequently leading to a better understanding of myself and personal growth.
