A Study on the Influence of Residents’ Participation on a Sense of Community

The purpose of this study is to find out the level of residents' the sense of community, and by verifying how a sense of community influences on residents participation, to activate residents participation and further through community participation, by self-realization and increasing quality of life of the residents, ultimately to contribute to improvement of the community welfare level. In order to achieve this goal, the following conclusions were obtained by a survey to 307 of local residents in Seodaemun-gu, people and analysis of study.

First, the respondents a sense of community was a relatively high level, and according to age, marital status, home ownership, length of residence, occupation among the demographic characteristics, the differences were statistically significant.

Second, the respondents level of residents participation was usually a little higher than normal, and in accordance with age, marital status, family enemies, occupation, education, length of residence among demographic characteristics, a statistically significant difference was found.

Third, to determine the impact on participation by the level of sense of community residents, in a multi-factor regression analysis, three sub-factors of emotional intimacy, sense of belonging and a sense of solidarity and mutual influence appeared to be positive effect on residents participation in order, and the fulfillment were not significant.

To solve local issues as participatory sub-factor, such as alerts information and participation submission, surveys and monitoring of administrative offices, participating local public hearings and meetings and residents meetings, participating in volunteer, and participation emotional intimacy were appeared the most positive (+), and belonging and solidarity of mutual influence consciousness were then appeared to affect.

Petition for solving local issues and protest rallies, donate participation, traffic safety and environmental protection campaign participation were influenced by a sense of belonging and a sense of solidarity and mutual influence of the biggest influences and then emotional intimacy were appeared to affect. Thus, a sense of community residents affects to participate in the positive, and emotional intimacy and sense of belonging and a sense of community residents interaction were found to be necessary factor for residents participation.

Based on the results of this study, the proposed measures to strengthen a sense of community affecting the residents participation were as follows.

By strengthening the sense of community, in order to activate the residents participation, it was importance to secure the physical characteristics of the space community, and in order to promote the sense of community, the intended plan was required.

Policies which enabled the local community to solve the problem, suggesting the direction of regional development community and the community itself, between the communities and the local network activation and direct participation in the resolution of local issues and causes, in the process, reinforcement of community the cohesion and unity of the community ultimately enable sustainable development.

Thus, in order to participate a substantial citizen and to grow continued participation environment, local administrative and institutional measures should be provided to support a variety of local small group activities.
