- A Study of an Art Education Teaching Plan Involving Public Art Projects : Focusing on the Middle School Art Curriculum
- Abstract
- As modern society is changing rapidly, the art education paradigm has continuously changed according to historical and social changes. Unlike in the past, visual art is used instead of art and various genres are dealt with within the category of art.
This paper looks into the meaning of public art, which defines a formal concept of a culture as an artwork along with the meaning of the social concept, "public". And based on public art, it explores an effective teaching plan for an art class using the public art project.
This paper begins by looking into the reason why public art emerged and why it is significant. For the answer, chapter 2 attempts to understand the types and cases of public art that emphasize "participation" and "communication". It looks into the concept and history of public art based on its theoretical background. And by discovering the social effect of public art, it could infer in advance an educational value in relation to public art that the next chapter will deal with.
Chapter 3 explains the educational value and role of public art in a real classroom from the viewpoint of the changing art education paradigm after analyzing the 2009 revised middle school art curriculum. We discovered that the public art section is limited to aesthetic experience and expression, and that students would find it difficult to find the meaning and problems inherent in public artwork, interpret and criticize them.
In addition, this chapter by comparing and analyzing educational application cases of public art projects created in real public educational spots investigates its educational effect. From this process it was observed that most students could interpret the lesson topic by themselves while solving problems and took the lead while teachers play the role of a teaching helper or nurturer.
Chapter 4 introduces a lesson plan that utilizes a public art project through a case study I conducted. In a real class with them I led the students in "Hide and Seek" at Changduk Women's Middle School based on the artist Ikjung Kang's artwork. Its format was composed of an aesthetic experience, expressive activity and appreciation. This lesson plan was suggested as a format to be used in a real classroom even though one of the challenges of any public art project is that it is hard to apply to a real class.
As a result of this lesson, students could find the theme of the lesson easily, making them feel closer to school and providing them with a meaning for their education that they discovered themselves. This result showed that a public art project that doesn't pursue individual interests, but rather emphasizes that public value can bring about a positive effect.
Chapter 5 deals with a problem that occurs when a public art project is applied to a real art class. The biggest problem is the current condition of art classes, whereby they are excluded from the current educational system which is itself centered on the college entrance examination.
In order for the art class to find its rightful place in the current college entrance exam-oriented school, parents and students should be recommended to experience art-related programs so that they can directly experience how art education makes humans happy, through which they can realize the importance and necessity of school art education. In this respect, this paper explored a desirable teaching plan using a public art project that can be utilized in a real class and accepted positively and willingly.
As today's public art is contributing to improving the members of this society's aesthetic value and their quality of life in the urban environment, I hope this study along with this positive example of art education using public art projects will boost art teachers'continuous research and its support, contributing to a reconsideration of current art education and the activation of a greater variety of classes.
