게르하르트 리히터 Gerhard Richter의 유리, 거울 작품 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 게르하르트 리히터(Gerhard Richter: 1932~)의 유리, 거울 작품에 관한 연구이다. 1967년부터 2004년 사이에 제작된 리히터의 유리, 거울 작품은 모두 평평한 면(들)로 이루어져 있다. 리히터는 유리와 거울이 회화의 밑바탕이 되는 캔버스나 패널처럼 모두 평평한 화면을 가졌으며, 유리 너머의 혹은 거울 앞의 공간을 재현해낸다는 점에서 회화적 특성을 가지고 있다는 점에 주목했다. 그래서 사진을 회화적 수단으로 전이시킨 것처럼 유리, 거울을 회화적 화면으로 이동시키고 있다. 그러나 전자가 작가의 손으로 이미 존재하는 이미지를 재현해낸 것이라면 후자는 관객의 시선으로 현실의 이미지를 화면 안에 재현해 낸다. 시공간을 고정시킴으로써 단일한 이미지를 생산하는 카메라와 달리 텅 빈 유리, 거울은 풍부한 재현을 위한 가능성으로 남게 되었다. 사진의 결박된 시간은 유리와 거울에서 현재의 시간으로 지속됨으로써 리히터가 강조한 가변적인 실재에 다가가고 있다. 그리고 작가의 창작 범위가 화면의 크기와 배치 장소를 선택하는 것에 국한됨에 따라 리히터가 제거하고자 한 예술가의 흔적은 최소화되지만 예술 생산의 범위는 확장되었다. 뿐만 아니라 관객과 회화 간의 현상학적 상호작용성은 전통적인 회화를 통해서 성취하기 힘든 것으로 리히터가 지속적으로 유리, 거울 작품을 제작하게 된 요인이다. 이 논점에서 본 논문의 첫째 장에서는 리히터의 미술관의 형성에 중요한 요인으로 사료되는 그의 생애와 유리, 거울 작품을 제작하게 된 시대적 배경을 다루었고, 2장에서는 유리, 거울 작품의 변화과정을 1991년 이전(전기)과 이후(후기)로 분리해 살펴보았다. 1절에서는 1991년 이전 유리에서 거울로 변화하는 과정을 <4개의 유리면 4 Panes of Glass>(1967), <유리면 Pane of Glass>(1977)과 <이중유리면 Double Pane of Glass>(1977), <거울 Mirror>(1981)을 통해 알아보았고, 2절에서는 <8개의 회색 8 Grey>(2002)과 <11개의 면 11 Scheiben>(2004)을 통해 1991년 이후 집중적으로 제작된 채색 유리와 겹쳐진 유리에 대해 알아보았다. 마지막 장에서는 이들 작품에서 두드러지게 나타나는 회화성과 탈양식성, 그리고 지각의 재현과 상대적 실재에 대해 조명하였다. 이를 통해 본 논자는 리히터의 유리, 거울 작품이 환영주의적 재현으로서의 회화적 전통과 평면성이라는 자기 지시성으로서의 회화의 전통을 모두 이어받고 있지만, 그것의 권위를 문제 삼고 있으며 그 권위 대신 개별 관람자들의 경험을 삽입하고 있다는 것에 주목할 수 있었다.|This Thesis is the spatial study on Gerhard Richter's Glass and Mirror(1967-2004). These works are composed of a flat plate(s). He notes that the glass and mirror have a flat plate like a canvas or a panel. So he transfer the glass and mirror to a picture as the photography does. But the former represents real images by spectators's eyes, the latter represents existed images by the artist's hand. Unlike a camera, a void glass and mirror become a possibility to abundant representation. A photography is bided with time, but the glass and mirror's time are continued. They get near to variable reality that Richter stressed. And the artist's creational sphere is limited to plate's dimension and arrangement. Phenomenological interactions between the spectator and the picture are realized in his Glass and Mirror. That is why Richter continued to produce Glass and Mirror. In this arguing point, Chapter II introduces a brief biography of his life, and a background of Glass and Mirror's production. Next Chapter provides a formation's process about Glass and Mirror. This Chapter is divided into two branches, which are process Glass to Mirror(<4 Panes of Glass>(1967), <Pane of Glass>(1977), <Double Pane of Glass>(1977) and <Mirror>(1981)) and the Painted Glass and the Overlapped Glass(<8 Grey>(2002) and <11 Scheiben>(2004)). And the last Chapter tells about distinctive feature of Richter's Glass and Mirror as the painterliness, anti-stylization, perceptional representation and relative reality. As the result to have studies like this, it can be said that Richter's Glass and Mirror follow traditions which painting as illusionistic representation and self-referential painting, but ask a question to its authority. Instead of that he regards the individual spectator's experience as a importance.
