갯벌 체험환경교육의 지리적 접근

Abstract

오늘날은 과히 ‘환경의 세기’라 할 정도로, 우리나라뿐만 아니라 전 세계 각 지역에서 환경을 화두로 하여, 환경 문제의 예방과 해결을 위한 노력들을 다양하게 시도하고 있으며, 특히 환경과 관련된 교육활동을 환경교육이라 지칭하고 이를 통해 환경문제를 해결하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 환경교육의 개념이나 목적은 환경을 인식하는 방법과 관련되어 시대마다 달라져왔다. 이에 따라 초기의 환경교육이 환경 및 환경문제에 대한 과학적 지식의 획득에 중점을 두었다면 오늘날의 환경교육은 가치, 태도의 함양을 중시하는 방향으로 변화되었다. 따라서 도덕적, 심미적 차원의 발달을 위해 보다 정의적 영역에 중점을 두는 환경교육이 강조되기 시작하였고, 태도나 가치와 같은 정의적 영역의 목표를 가장 잘 달성할 수 있는 방법으로 체험환경교육이 대두되었다. 우리나라에서도 1990년대 체험환경교육이 강조되기 시작하여 이후 지속적으로 환경교육에서 중요한 영역으로 간주되고 있다. 체험환경교육은 주변의 자연환경 및 시설물들을 학습의 장으로 활용하고 있다. 그 중 갯벌은 오감체험을 통해 갯벌을 구성하고 있는 많은 생명들의 유기적 관계를 현장에서 손쉽게 관찰할 수 있으며, 또한 갯벌주변에 대한 체험과 탐조활동의 적절한 병행이 가능하므로 체험환경교육의 장으로서 그 활용성과 가치가 매우 높다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 현재 이루어지고 있는 갯벌체험 프로그램이 대개의 경우 관광의 의미를 벗어나지 못하거나, 어패류의 채집체험에 머물고 있는 실정이다. 이처럼 잘못된 갯벌체험으로 인해 오히려 갯벌의 생태계가 파괴되는 것은 물론, 체험대상자들로 하여금 생명을 경시하게 만드는 극악한 폐단을 가져올 수도 있다. 체험환경교육이 호기심을 자극하여 나아가 자연을 이해하면서 자신과 환경과의 관계를 발견할 수 있게 해야 한다는 것을 생각할 때 갯벌체험학습 프로그램의 올바른 개발과 정착이 시급하다 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 환경교육 및 체험환경교육의 이론적 고찰을 통하여,환경교육의 정의 및 목적, 체험환경교육의 의미 및 필요성, 국내ㆍ외 해양환경교육 현황을 살펴보았다. 또한, 갯벌의 이론적 고찰을 통하여, 갯벌의 기능 및 가치에 대하여 고찰하였다. 이에 국내 갯벌 체험환경교육의 현황을 토대로 하여, 현재 국내에서 이루어지고 있는 갯벌 체험학습의 실태를 분석하고 효과적인 갯벌 체험환경교육을 위해 다음과 같이 3단계로 이루어진 프로그램을 제안하였다. 1단계는 간접학습 프로그램으로 직접체험학습을 하기 전 갯벌의 역할, 환경, 생태계 등 전반적인 분야에 대해 지식을 가질 수 있도록 하며, 2단계는 직접체험 프로그램으로 갯벌의 자연자원을 직접 몸으로 느껴 볼 수 있도록 하고, 마지막 3단계는 지역사회학습으로 지역사회의 사회ㆍ문화적인 특성을 이해하고 이를 경험할 수 있게 구성하였다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 프로그램을 통하여, 다양한 갯벌 체험환경교육의 시도와 지속적인 활동 및 체계적 시스템 구축을 이루고, 체험학습의 새로운 장으로서의 갯벌의 역할을 재고해 보고자 한다.

| To the extent that these days can be seen as the century of environment, each country regards environment as a big issue and is making various efforts to prevent and solve environmental problems. They refer to environment-related educational activities as environmental education and are striving to solve environmental problems through the education. The concept or purpose of environmental education has been changing just as recognition about environment has been changing with time. As a result, the early environmental education gave a weight to delivering scientific knowledge about environment and its problems, whereas today's environmental education has turned into attaching importance to developing values and attitudes to environment. Thus, they began to emphasize environmental education which appreciates affective domain for development of moral and aesthetic sense, and so experience environmental education has emerged as a method to accomplish objectives of affective domain such as attitudes and values. Since the 1990s, our country has also stressed experience environmental education and steadily views it as an important part of environmental education. Experience environmental education utilizes natural environment and facilities around as scenes of education. Among them, tidal flat has great practicability and value because participants can easily watch organic relations of many living things making up tidal flat through experience with the use of five senses of theirs and it also enables both experience and observation activities. But in fact, most of tidal flat experience programs being currently executed do not overcome the level of mere tourism and some of them are limited to collecting shellfish. Needless to say, wrong tidal flat experience may destroy its ecology and bring about bad practices of neglecting life on the part of participants in tidal flat experience. The development and establishment of correct tidal flat experience programs are urgent in that experience environmental education should stimulate curiosity and help them understand nature and realize their relations with nature. This study looked into the definition and purpose of environmental education, the meaning and necessity of experience environmental education and the present conditions of domestic and international maritime environmental education through theoretical research of environmental education and experience environmental education. In addition, this study looked into functions and values of tidal flat through theoretical research about tidal flat. Accordingly, based upon the present conditions of local tidal flat experience environmental education, this study analyzed the actual facts of tidal flat experience-study currently carried on across the nation and suggests three phases of programs for effective tidal flat experience environmental education on the basis of the analysis. The first phase is indirect study programs which provide knowledge about overall areas including roles, environment, ecology of tidal flat, etc. The second phase is direct study programs which allow participants feel natural resources of tidal flat with five senses of theirs. The last phase is local society study programs which are composed to help participants understand and experience social and cultural characteristics of local society. This study intends to reconsider roles of tidal flat as a new scene of experience environmental so that programs like these can encourage various and continued activities of tidal flat experience environmental education and serve to establish an organized system of environmental education.
