S. Barber 의 「Knoxville : Summer of 1915」 에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 현대 미국음악을 대표하는 주요 작곡가의 사무엘 바버(Samuel Barber, 1910-1981)의 <Knoxville: Summer of 1915> op.24 (1947)에 관한 연구이다. 바버의 음악은 낭만주의에 기초하여 전통적이고 다소 보수적인 경향을 유지하면서 그 안에 20세기의 새로운 양식을 적절히 융합하고 있다. 따라서 그의 음악은 서정적이고 이해하기 쉬우면서도 새롭고 독특하여 연주자와 청중 모두에게 큰 호응을 얻고 있다. 작곡가이자 바리톤 가수였던 바버는 성악가와 성악작품에 대하 이해가 뛰어나며 미국 가곡 발전에 핵심적인 인물로 평가되고 있다. 특히 가곡은 바버 자신의 음악적 서정성을 가장 잘 표현 할 수 있었던 분야로 그의 작품들에서 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 문학적 조예가 깊었던 그는 가곡을 작곡함에 있어 가사선택을 가장 근본적인 기준으로 삼고 있다. 바버는 여러 시인들의 글을 가사로 사용했는데 그 중 제임스 에이지(James Agee, 1909-1955)의 글을 많이 사용하였다. <Knoxville: Summer of 1915>도 에이지의 소설 <가족의 죽음(A Death in Family)>의 프롤로그로써 바버는 이 프롤로그에서 느낀 작가와의 동일한 정서를 음악을 통해 직접적이고 아주 강렬하게 재창조해 내고 있다. 특히, 이 작품은 바버의 원숙한 작품시기에 만들어진 작품으로, 본 논문에서는 작품에 사용된 바버의 전형적인 형식, 선율, 조성, 리듬, 화성의 분석을 통해 그의 독특한 음악양식에 대해 연구해보았다.|This thesis is the analysis of Knoxville: Summer of 1915, op. 14 (1927) by Samuel Barber, one of the great composers in twentieth-centry America. Barber is categorized as neo - romantic composer. He kept a traditional and conservative trend based on romanticism and also united twentieth-centry modern forms with this trend. Accordingly, new and unique, they have appealed both to performed to audiences and have been performed frequently. Barber was a composer and baritone singer, who had the ability to understand both singers and songs. Now he is regarded as one of the musicians who have developed the modern American art song. Barber's lyricism is well expressed in about his song. When he composed these songs, he prudently chose the words using the poem as the base of each work. Knoxville: Summer of 1915 is one of the best works with coincidence of words and composition. Here, directly and intensively, Barber recreated the very emotion that James Agee created in <A Death in the Family>'s prologue. As this work was composed in composition. This study is aimed at researching Barber's specific techniques by analyzing the forms, melody, structure, rhythm and harmony of the work.
