Abstract

본 논문은 20세기 미국음악을 대표하는 주요 작곡가의 한 사람인 Samuel Barber (1910-1981)의 <Hermit Songs> op. 29에 관한 연구이다. Barber is categorized as a neo-romantic composer. His art is essentially lyric and dramatic, his harmonic language is basically that of the 19th century. He united twentieth centry modern forms with this trend. Accordingly, as his works are not only lyrical and easy to understand but also new and unique. Barber was a composer studied vocal music, who had the ability to understand both singers and songs. Now he is regarded as one of the musicians who have developed the modern American art song. Barber's lyricism is well expressed in about 100 songs. Barber felt that the poem was of primary importance in his songs. The subject of this thesis, Hermit Songs which is written in 1953 is anonymous poems written by Irish monks and scholars, dating from the eighth to the thirteenth centuries. The texts that are wideranging in mood and length, encompassing that vary from intensely devout to ribald. In order to accommodate the rhythmic irregularities of the poetry, Barber omits metrical signatures throughout the cycle. Hermit Songs contains a variety of forms and styles. The forms and styles are always dictated by the text and Barber uses them to create a unique ambience for this cycle. Hermit Songs in their diversity seem to represent a summary of Barber's stylistic development with regard to his songs at midcareer. Hermit Songs is a masterpiece of Barber's work, one of Barber's most performed vocal works. It ranks among the foremost song cycles of twentieth centry.
