Abstract

로저 퀼터(Roger Quilter 1877-1953)는 영국의 시를 사랑한 20세기 영국의 작곡가로 시를 아름다운 선율로 이끌어 내는데 뛰어난 능력을 보여준 작가이다. 그의 작품은 영국 예술가곡의 주요 레파토리로 등장하며 청중들에게 애호되고 있다. 그의 가곡의 전반적인 특징은 독특한 멜로디 감각과, 시의 선택과 곡을 붙임에 있어서의 세련된 취향으로 볼 수 있다. 특히 퀼터는 시의 선택에 탁월한 감각을 지녔으며 엘리자베스 왕조의 시기의 시인인 셰익스피어(William Shakespeare)를 비롯하여 헤릭(Robert Herrick), 블레이크(William Blake), 쉘리(Percy Bysshe Shelley), 테니슨(Alfred Lord Tennyson)의 시를 선호하여 이 시들에 곡을 붙였고 그 곡들은 훌륭한 가곡 작품으로 평가되고 있다. 또한 그의 가곡은 시에 대한 음악적 화답으로 가사와 음악이 완벽하게 일치하며, 서정적 선율에 풍부한 화성이 뒷받침되어 호소력 짙은 가곡으로 그 진가를 발휘한다. 또한 청중들이 쉽고 편안하게 다가갈 수 있는 친근함을 지니고 있어 전문가를 비롯한 비전문가에게도 애호되는 음악임을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 본 논문은 그의 작품 중 <Seven Elizabethan Lyrics (7개의 엘리자베스 시대의 노래) op.12>에 대해 분석 연구하고자 한다. <Seven Elizabethan Lyrics>는 퀼터의 전성기인 1908년에 작곡된 것으로 그가 많이 다루었던 16세기 엘리자베스 1세 시대 시를 그의 독특한 감성과 지성을 적용하여 선택, 창작한 작품이다. 이 작품에서 사용된 시는 대부분 작가를 알 수 없는 무명작가의 시를 사용하였는데, 시인을 알 수 있는 곡은 두 곡으로, 두 번째 곡인 <My life's delight(내 삶의 기쁨)>은 캠피온(Thomas Campion 1567-1619 )의 시를, 여섯 번째 곡인 <By a fountainside(분수가에서)>는 존슨(Ben Jonson 1572-1637 )의 시를 사용하였다. 이 작품은 총 7곡으로 구성되어있으며 대부분 자연과 사랑을 노래하고 있다. 선율은 단순하지만 퀼터가 시를 음악적으로 만들어내는 타고난 감각, 반주부가 선율과 함께 시를 잘 나타내 주는 점 등 그의 뛰어난 음악적 능력을 충분히 보여주는 작품이다. 본 논문에서는 작곡가 퀼터의 생애와 그의 작품을 통한 음악적 특징을 가곡을 중심으로 하여 연구하였고, <Seven Elizabethan Lyrics> 의 분석과, 반주에 있어서의 연주법에 관한 연구를 통해 퀼터가 가곡에서 보여주는 특출한 선율적 감각과 세련됨, 그리고 그 선율을 뒷받침하는 화성의 조화에 대해 보다 중점적으로 고찰하고자 한다.|Roger Quilter (1877-1953) is British composer of the 20th century who loved the British poem. He shows great ability of leading poem into a beautiful melody. His works are performed as an important repertory of British songs, and are loved by many audiences. In brief, the distinctive features of his music are his unique melodic sense, and his taste in selecting poems and setting them to music was. Especially, he had an excellent sense when selecting poems. As he preferred poems by Herrick, Blake, Shelley and Tennyson, and especially those of Shakespeare and the Elizabethan era, so he loved setting their poems to music, and they have been rating highly as fine examples of the art song genre. Also his works are a perfect synthesis of poet and music as a musical response to poetry. His songs prove their real worth as appealing songs thanks to their lyrical melodies with rich harmonies. His songs are widely sung by not only professionals but also amateurs, because his songs make audiences feel friendly and comfortable. This thesis shows the explanation and studies of one of his works, <Seven Elizabethan Lyrics op.12> (1908) which was composed during the best years of Quilter. This composition was created by applying special sense and intelligence into the poems which he often used during the period of Elizabeth Ⅰin Sixteenth century. The poems used in the work are mostly written by unknown poets. There are only two songs which stated the poet's names. That is the second piece, ‘My life's delight' written by Thomas Campion (1567-1619), and another is the sixth piece called, 'By a Fountainside' by Ben Johnson (1572-1637). This piece consists of total seven songs. Mostly, they are about the nature and love. The melody is pretty simple. However, Quilter was able to transform the poems into beautiful musical pieces, and chorus part blends well with the melody to signify the meaning of the poem. Thus, these compositions are enough to show Quilter’s great musical talent. Thesis focuses on the life of Quilter and musical character of his works through his composition, especially songs. Also, in detail, it analyzes <Seven Elizabethan Lyrics op.12> and his outstanding sense of melodies and refinement through the study of technique in accompaniment as well as harmony which support the melodies.
