Abstract

동시대의 문화와 대중매체에 끊임없는 관심을 가져온 로버트 롱고(Robert Longo, 1953-)는 1980년대 미국 미술을 대표하는 작가 중 한 사람이다. 그는 1977년 뉴욕의 미술계에 등장하여 화가, 조각가, 퍼포먼스 예술가, 영화 감독 등으로 활동하는 등 다양한 방식으로 자신의 예술세계를 전개해 나갔다. 화가의 임무는 동시대의 정신을 표출하는데 있다고 생각한 그는 어려서부터 많은 시간을 영화, TV, 잡지, 만화책 등에서 본 이미지를 재창조하는데 보냈다. 이러한 대중매체와 그 이미지에 대한 관심은 그의 작업의 근간이 되며 작품에 많은 영향을 끼치고 있다. 실제로 그의 작품에는 과거의 미술작품, 광고, 영화 등의 이미지가 광범위 하게 차용되고 있다. 그는 친숙한 대중문화와 작품을 결합시키고 모더니즘의 추상미술로 인해 사라졌던 구상 이미지를 작품에 복귀시킴으로써 자신의 미술을 접근하기 쉬운 것, 보통 사람들이 좋아하는 것 즉, 대중적인것으로 만들고자 하였다. 이러한 방법은 엘리트주의적 순수문화를 추구한 모더니즘의 강압적 미학논리에 반동하는 것이며 동시에 그의 미학적 뿌리가 작품을 산업사회의 생산물처럼 대중에게 친근감을 주는 것으로 간주 했던 팝아트의 미적 대중주의와 연관성이 있음을 보여주는 것이다. 관념적인 추상미술의 형식에서 벗어난 롱고의 작품은 그가 활동한 1980년대 세계 화단에서 논의되었던 포스트모더니즘의 특성을 적극적으로 반영하고 있다. 그는 모더니즘 미술에서 배척되어왔던 알레고리를 작품에 재등장 시켰고 특유의 연출력과 조합능력을 바탕으로 관련성 없는 이미지들을 조합한다. 또한 이질적인 소재들을 사용하고 여러 장르를 혼합하는 등 모더니즘의 논리적 개념과 순수성을 거부했다. 여러 가지 방법론을 가지고 모더니즘 미학에 대한 반론을 제시한 롱고의 작품은 『해체주의』에 가담한 것으로 평가되어 진다. 롱고의 작품세계는 1970년대 미술계에 등장하면서부터 현재까지 다양한 변화를 겪으며 독창적인 양식으로 발전해 갔다. 특히 다양한 장르를 넘나들며 작품을 제작하는 방식은 일관적인 방법론을 가지고 이미지를 제작해 온 동시대 포스트 모더니즘 작가들과 차별화되는 점이라 할 수 있다. 여러 가지 실험적인 이미지를 통해 그가 일관적으로 추구한 것은 적극적 문화 참여와 동화(同化), 권력과 무력에 관한 것이었다. 따라서 그의 작품에는 눈에 보이지 않는 힘에 대한 저항, 투쟁, 이로 인한 갈등과 긴장감이 표현 되어 있다. 본 논문은 예술 작품에 동시대 문화와 사회 현상을 투영하면서도 독특한 자신만의 표현 양식을 가진 작가 로버트 롱고의 작품을 연구하기 위한 것이다. 본고에서는 1980년대 미국 사회와 문화를 반영하며 동시에 비판적 성격을 지닌 컴바인(Combine) 작품들의 양식적 실례를 중심으로 롱고 작품의 특성을 살펴보려 한다. 로버트 롱고는 현재까지도 다양한 영역에서 작품 활동을 하는 작가이므로 본고에서는 그의 1970~80년대의 작품들로 연구 범위를 제한했으며, 팝 아트와 대중매체의 영향을 직접적으로 반영하며 포스트모더니즘 미술의 특징을 드러내는 컴바인을 중심으로 논구하였음을 밝혀 둔다.|Robert Longo(1953-) who has had endless interest about contemporary cutlure and mass media is one of the artists to represent American fine art in 1980s. He unfolds his own art world with diverse methods such as acting aspainter, sculptor, performance artist, and movie director etc. by appearing inthe fine art circle at New York in 1977 He who thought that duty of painter is in expressing contemporary spiritspent much time for recreating the iamge- seen in movie, TV, magazine, andcartoon etc. from childhood. This interest for mass media and the imagebecomes the basis of his work, and it has much influence on work. Really,in his work, image of past fine art work, advertisement, and movie etc. isbeing borrowed widely. He tried to make his own fine art as what is easy to approach, whatcommon people like, that is, what is popular by combining familiar massculture and work and returning concrete image which disappeared due to the abstract fine art of modernism. This method is what reacts on the coercive aesthetics logic of modernism which sought elite pure culture, and at thesame time, it is showing that his aesthetic root has relevancy with theaesthetic mass principle of pop art which deemed that work is what givesaffection to mass like the product of industrial society. Work of Longo which got out of the form of ideal abstract fine artistreflecting the feature of post modernism which was discussed in the worldpainting circle in 1980s when he acted positively. He made allegory whichhas been rejected in the fine art of modernism reappear in work, and hemixes irrelevant images on the basis of peculiar production power and mixingpower. In addition, he rejected the logical concept and urity of modernismsuch as using heterogeneous materials and mixing various genres etc. Workof Longo which suggested oblection on the aesthetics of modernism withvarious methodologies is evaluated as participation in dislointing principle. Work world of Longo has developed into original style, experiencingdiverse changes up the appeared in fine art circle in 1970sEspecially, method to manufactore work, frequenting diverse genres may bereferred to as being differentiated from contemporary postmodernism artistswho has manufactured image with consistent methodology. What he soughtconsistently through various experimental images are what about positiveculture participating, assimilation, power and force. Thus, in his work,resistance for invisible power, fight, and trouble and strain due to it areexpressed. This thesis if for studying the work of artist, Robert Longo who has his own peculiar expression style, reflecting contemporary culture and society phenomenon on work of art. In this study, this researcher tries to examinethe feature of combine work of Longo centering around the stylistic exampleof combine works which reflect American society and culture in 1980s andlimited study range with the works in 1970-1980s and I discussed centering around combine to reflect the influence of pop art and mass media directlyand reveal the feature of fine art of posDodernism.
