Kiki Smith의 작품 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 신체를 매개로 하여 페미니즘 작업을 펼치고 있는 조각가이자, 판화가인 키키 스미스(Kiki Smith)에 대한 작업을 연구함으로써 그녀가 표현하고자 한 여성성, 여성 신체가 갖는 정치적 문화적 사회적 의미를 짚어보는 데 의미를 두고 있다. 키키 스미스는 신체에 관심을 가지며, 1980년대 이후 독자적인 작품으로 대표적인 신체미술가이자 포스트 모더니즘 사상에 바탕을 둔 페미니즘 미술가이다. 1954년생으로 미니멀리즘 조각가인 아버지 토니 스미스와 오페라 가수인 어머니사이에서 예술가적 환경에서 자라났으며, 초기에는 주위동료의 영향을 받기도 하였고, 아버지 토니 스미스의 죽음과 동생의 에이즈로 인한 죽음으로 인해 인간의 생과 사 그리고 그 경계선에 대한 관심을 갖게 되었다. 그의 가톨릭신자로서의 종교적 배경도 작업에 많은 영향을 끼치고 있으며, 응급실 요원 수련에서 갖게 된 지식이 그녀가 갖게 된 신체의 세부적인 표현에 작용되었다. 키키 스미스의 작품을 분석해보면, 표현 방법에 있어서 여성적 그로테스크함과 혐오스러움을 다룬 애브젝트 아트가 페미니즘적인 성격으로 강하게 자리잡고 있다. 재료와 장식성에서도 페미니즘적인 특성을 보여주며, 주제면에 있어서도 여성과 여성의 신체를 하찮게 보는 사회 문화적인 구조를 고발하고 있다. 스미스는 기존의 미술사에서 보여지는 나른하고 관능적인 비너스, 타락의 원죄를 지닌 이브의 여성상을 거부하고 종교적 주제에서의 구원의 이미지로서의 여성의 이미지를 찾는다. 또한 페미니즘 시각에서 남성 중심의 사회에서 억압받고 차별받는 여성의 신체, 구체적으로는 여성의 생식기관, 여성의 본능, 심지어 모성을 주제로 삼고, 기존의 뇌, 심장 등의 상부구조에서 소화기, 생식기 등의 하부구조로의 계급구조를 전복시키며, 남성 중심의 사회, 언어, 문화의 억압으로부터 해방시키고자 하였다. 그는 포스트모더니즘 사상을 바탕으로 신체미술과 페미니즘의 영향을 적나라한 신체 묘사와 통제력을 잃은 본능에 따른 인간으로서 표현하며, 이들은 우리에게 혐오감을 유발하고, 그의 절단된 인체와 분비물과 체액 등은 신체의 하부구조의 관심을 일으키게 함으로써 인간 신체의 계급구조에 비판을 던진다. 신체와 신체의 각기 부분의 이미지들을 통해 사회구조를 해부하듯이 인간 신체를 해부한다. 남성의 성적 대상일 뿐만 아니라 남성의 사회적 우위성과 달리 여성 특히 여성신체에 대한 부정적이고 불결하다고 믿는 터부시되어오던 이미지들은 현대 미술 특히 신체 미술에서는 주요 주제로 쓰이고 있는 요소들이다. 대표적인 페미니스트 작가로서의 키키 스미스는 여성신체의 부정적이고 비천한 이미지를 주체로서의 여성으로 새롭게 주지시킨 미술가 중의 한사람이다. 그녀의 작업은 신체와 각각의 세부의 이미지들이 의학적으로 정확하지는 않지만, 사회적으로서 정치적인 문제를 노출시킬 수 있다고 믿고, 사회구조를 해부하고, 사회적 지위를 구분 짓듯이, 각 신체의 부분을 해부하고, 신체 내부에서의 상부, 하부구조라고 여겨졌던 기관의 계급을 전복시킨다. 본 논문은 차별되고 억압되고 왜곡되어온 여성의 신체에 대한 새로운 문제 의식과, 작가 특유의 생과 사를 넘나드는 질병과 삶의 경계선에서의 개인 스스로의 경험을 가지고 여성신체의 존재를 끊임없이 표현한 스미스의 작업을 연구할 것이다. 결론적으로 페미니스트 신체미술가인 키키 스미스는 남성에 의해 욕망의 대상이 되고, 이상화되었던 여성의 신체에서 이성이 아닌 본능과 직관에 따르는 여성의 의미를 새롭게 의미를 찾아냈다고 할 수 있겠다. 여성의 신체는 성적 대상으로서의 남성의 시각이 아니라 여성 자신이 치열하게 존재를 확인하고, 욕망을 표현할 수 있는 전쟁터의 장소로서 큰 의미를 지닌다. 동시대 작가로서 아직 키키 스미스의 작품에 대해 규정짓는 데는 약간의 무리가 있을 수는 있겠으나, 그녀의 작업이 이슈화될 만큼 강력하게 자신의 메시지를 표현해내고 있고, 신체이미지를 중심 삼아 변화되어 왔으며, 현대 페미니스트 작가들과 함께 여성의 새로운 정체성에 대해 연구한 업적에 대해 논문 주제로서의 의의를 둘 수 있겠다.|This thesis is laying meaning in touching the femininity that Kiki Smith tried to express and political, cultural and social meaning by studying the work for Kiki Smith who is a sculptor and wood-cutter who did feminism work by making body as medium. Kiki Smith is representative body artist who had interest for body which can be regarded the topic of the 20th century and who had independent work after 1980s, and she is a feminism artist to be based on post-modernism thought. She was born in 1954 and grew up in artistic environment between father, Tony Smith who is minimalism sculptor and mother, opera singer, and she was influenced by surrounding colleagues in early days, and she came to have interest about life and death of human beings and the boundary by the death of father, Smith and by the death of younger sister due to AIDS. Her Catholic religious background has much influence on work, and knowledge that she came to have in the training for the personnel at emergency room acted on the detailed expression of body that she came to have. To analyze the work of Kiki Smith, in expression method, feminine grotesque and abject art are settling as feminine character strongly. Material and decoration nature show feminine feature, and subject side is accusing of socio-cultural structure which regard female and female body trifling. Smith refuses weary and sensuous Venus to be seen in existing fine art history and the female image of Eve to have the original sin of corruption but finds the image of female as the image of Goddess in mythology or image of salvation in religious subject. In addition, she made the body of female to be oppressed and distinguished in the society centering around male-genital organ of female, instinct of female, maternity as subject from feminism viewpoint, and overturns class structure in the inside organs of body, criticizes the existing upper and lower class structure of body, and tried to release from the society centering around male and the oppression of language and culture. She expresses bodily fine art and feminism influence which are the feature of the 20th century with naked body description and human being to follow instinct to lose control power on the basis of post-modernism thought, and these induce hatred to us, and her cut human body, secretion, and body fluids etc. criticize the class structure of human body by arousing the interest of lower structure of body. She dissects human body, as she dissects society structure through body and images of each part of body. Unlike the social superiority of male as well as the sexual subject of male, female, especially, images which have been taboo which are believed negative and impure for female body are elements which are being used as main subject in modern fine art or bodily fine art. Kiki Smith as a representative feminist artist is one of the artists who made the negative and humble image of female body known as female as subject newly. Her work is to dissect society structure by believing that body and images of each detailed part of body may expose political problem socially, though it is not exact medically. And, she dissects the part of each body, as she distinguishes between social position and overturns the class of organs which were regarded as upper structure and lower structure in body. This thesis will be the thesis of study on the work of Smith who expressed the existence of female body endlessly with new critical mind for the body of female which has been distinguished, oppressed and distorted and with artist's characteristic individual experience at the boundary of disease to frequent life and death and life. In conclusion, it can be said that Kiki Smith, feminist body artist found female as subject from idealized female body and found female to follow instinct and intuition which are not reason as subject. Body of female has great meaning as the place of battlefield that female, herself may confirm existence intensely and express desire which is not from the viewpoint of male as sexual subject. There may be a little unreasonableness in regulating the work of Kiki Smith as an artist to exist now and to do active work activity. But, about the achievement that her work expressed her own message powerfully to the extent that it was made into issue and it has changed centering around body image, and the study on the new original form of female was made with modern feminist artists, meaning may be laid as thesis subject.
