Abstract

미국의 예술가곡은 유럽의 예술가곡에 비해 비교적 짧은 역사 속에서 발전을 이뤄냈다. 특히 1910년 경 미국 시문학의 발전으로 인해 예술가곡의 발전이 더욱 가속화 되었다. 본 논문은 미국 예술가곡 역사에 있어 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는 존 우즈 듀크(John Woods Duke, 1899-1984)와 그의 음악에 대해 살펴보았다. 듀크는 문학을 사랑하는 아버지와 성악가인 어머니의 영향을 받아 일찍부터 문학과 음악에 관심을 갖게 되었고 자연스럽게 예술가곡을 작곡하게 되었다. 듀크는 가곡을 작곡할 때 대부분 미국 시인들의 시를 사용했다. 시를 중요시 여긴 그의 가곡은 음악과 시의 조화가 잘 이루어지는 것이 특징이다. 또한 성악적으로 작곡되어 관객과 연주자들에게 호평을 받고 있으며 그는 미국 가곡 역사에서 중요한 부분을 차지하고 있는 작곡가 중 한명이다. 본 논문은 듀크의 가곡들 중 비교적 많이 알려지지 않은 <Three songs>를 연구하여 이해를 돕고자 한다. 이 작품은 리차드 닉슨(Richard Nickson)의 시로 듀크의 후기에 작곡되어 그의 예술가곡의 특징이 잘 나타난 작품들 중 하나로 평가된다.|An Analysis of the <Three Songs> by John Woods Duke

Although the history of American art song is shorter than the European art song, American art song has accomplished its development. As American poem was developed in 1910's, the art song was developed accordingly. This essay analyses John Woods Duke, a notable musician in American Art Song history, and his music. His parents influenced him to have interests in literature and music in his early age. Duke applied American poems in his Art songs. Music and poems were harmonized in his Art songs. He was a representative composer utilized vocal musics in Art songs. The melody of "Three Songs" was composed as speaking that there were not many leaps within and allowed an artist to breath naturally. Duke expressed the details of play directions which enabled musicians to comprehend the music. He had marked tunes in his early works but he did not mark tunes in his later work to allow its variation of changes in tunes. "Three Songs" was analyzed in this research. "Three Songs", which Duke's musical characteristics are well represented, is analyzed in this essay. The essay may help audiences to understand "Three Songs" and help musicians to comprehend the music.
