A Study on the Compositional Style of the Sonata for Piano and Cello in F, Op.99
Abstract
This thesis explores Johannes Brahms’ Sonata for Piano and Cello in F Major, Op. 99(1886) concentrating on the stylistic characteristics and structural analysis. The similarities of compositional techniques used in chamber music and symphony are examined by the comparison between this piece and his Symphony in F Major, Op. 90 (1882) composed in the same period.
Sonata for Piano and Cello in F Major, Op.99 is written in a manner of a brilliant orchestral writing and is considered as one of the large pieces in Brahms’ chamber repertoire. There are also several similarities of compositional technique between Sonata for Piano and Cello in F Major, Op.99 and Symphony in F Major, Op. 90; for example, Brahms used the thematic motive of the last movement in the Symphony Op.90 once again in the 3rd movement of sonata later.
The close structural relationship between duo sonata and symphony, and the coloristic orchestral atmosphere in the entire movements from Sonata for Piano and Cello in F Major, Op. 99 support the idea that the chamber music in this period is strongly influence by the symphony.
