Gustav Mahler의 초기 가곡 Des Knaben Wunderhorn 민속시집에 의한 가곡 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 구스타프 말러(Gustav Mahler)의 초기 가곡 <젊은 시절의 가곡과 노래(Lieder und Gesänge aus der Jugendzeit) > 제 3집을 연구한 것이다. 이 가곡집은 브렌타노(Clemens Brentano)와 아르님(Ludwieg Joachim von Arnim)의 공동작업으로 이루어진 독일 최초의 민속시집 <소년의 신기한 뿔피리(Des Knaben Wunderhorn)>에서 가사를 발췌하여 작곡한 것으로, 말러의 전체 작품 활동 시기(1880-1910)를 3기로 나누어볼 때 민속적 양식을 추구하며 표제 음악적 양식을 가진 제1기(1880-1900)에 속한다. 민속시집 <소년의 신기한 뿔피리>에 많은 관심을 갖고 있던 말러는, 초기의 낭만시와 자작시 외에 무려 20년 동안이나 이 시집을 가지고 작곡을 하였다. 브렌타노와 아르님에 의해 수집·편찬된 민속시집 <소년의 신기한 뿔피리>는 중세 후반기부터 시작하여 당시에 이르기까지 창작되어 구전으로 전승되어 온 것으로 독일 서정시에 새로운 시대를 여는데 큰 공헌을 하였다. 아이헨도르프, 울란트, 하이네, 뫼리케, 레나우 등 낭만주의의 많은 시인들이 이 시집을 모범으로 낭만시를 창작하였고, 브람스와 볼프 그리고 말러는 이 시집에서 가사를 발췌하여 작곡하였다. 이러한 민요에 대한 관심의 산물로서 나타난 민간전승에 의한 민속시집 <소년의 신기한 뿔피리>는 아르님과 브렌타노라는 두 작가의 공동 작품으로만 아니라, 독일 후기 낭만파의 특성을 대변하는 작품으로서 중요한 의의를 가지고 있다. 본 논문의 연구로, 민속시집 <소년의 신기한 뿔피리>에 의한 말러의 <젊은 시절의 가곡과 노래> 제 3집은 단순하고 명료하게 민속성을 유지하기 위하여 온음계적 진행을 근본으로 삼으며, 음정간의 4도 도약을 즐겨 사용하여 소박함을 표현하고 있다. 또한 감정과 분위기를 표현하기 위해 자유로운 리듬 진행과 조성의 잦은 변화 등 그의 후기 낭만적인 작곡기법상의 특징을 보여주고 있다. 비록 말러의 작품들은 그가 죽은 뒤인 50년 후에야 인정받았지만, 말러는 이후 20세기 작곡기법에 있어 중요한 선구자로 인식되었으며 아르놀트 쇤베르크(Arnold Schönberg), 드미트리 쇼스타코비치(Dmitrii Dmitrievich Shostakovich), 벤자민 브리튼(Edward Benjamin Britten )등과 같은 작곡가들에게 영향을 끼쳤다.|This thesis is the study on the third series of <Lieder und Gesänge aus der Jugendzeit> which is the music composed by Gustav Mahler. The words of this song selected from the song of <Des Knaben Wunderhorn> for which Clemens Brentano and Ludwig Joachim von Arnim worked together. This music is Mahler's initial work - Mahler's activities can be divided into three parts - which does mainly pursue a folk style and is characteristic of a program music style. Mahler as a man interested very much in the music <Des Knaben Wunderhorn> was composed from this series for as many as 20 years as well as the early Romantic poem and his own poem. <Des Knaben Wunderhorn>, the music collected and compiled by Brentano and Arnim, contributed so much to open the new age of the German lyric poetry as was created and then was handed down by tradition from the latter half of the Middle Age to the day. This collection is a good example to a lot of poets of the Romanticism such as Eichendorff, Uhland, Heine, Mörike, and Lenau. Brahms, Wolf, and Mahler are selected words from this collection for their musical composition. The third series of the music <Lieder und Gesänge aus der Jugendzeit> studied in this thesis's subject made the progress with the diatonic of melody scale the basis to maintain its folk style in the simplicity and clearness. It also uses often a skiped fourth in musical intervals to represent its simplicity. It also showes the features of Mahler's later Romantic composition skills that can explained with liberal Rhythm and frequent changes of the composition. Although Mahler's music could not have recognized until he had died and after that even 50 years passed, he affected composers such as Arnold Schönberg, Dmitrii Shostakovich, and Benjamin Britten as well as was recognized the frontier of the composition skill in the 20 century.
