Benjamin Britten 의 연가곡 <Winter Words, Op.52>에 대한 연구

Abstract

Britten은 20세기 영국 음악의 발전에 큰 공헌을 한 작곡가로 전 생애에 걸쳐 기악곡, 성악곡, 합창곡, 오페라, 발레음악, 종교음악, 영화음악 등 여러 분야에서 훌륭한 작품들을 남겼다. 그 중에서도 100여곡에 달하는 그의 성악 작품들은 17세기 Henry Purcell(1659-1695) 이후 침체되었던 영국 음악에 새로운 장을 열어 주었다.

본 논문에서는 Britten의 13개의 연가곡 중 1953년에 작곡된 <Winter Words, Op.52>에 관해 연구하고자 한다. <Winter Words, Op.52>는 Thomas Hardy(1840-1928)의 시를 바탕으로 한 8곡의 연가곡으로 자연과 인간의 삶을 풍자적으로 노래한 곡으로, 각각의 시들은 Britten의 섬세하고 깊이 있는 문학적 감각으로 음악으로 재배열 되었다. 가곡들의 순서는 조성관계상 아치형식을 이루며 배치되었다. 제 1곡과 마지막 제 8곡은 d minor와 D major로 감정적인 분위기를 같이 한다. 제 2곡과 제 7곡은 c minor와 C major로 두 시 모두 기차를 소재로 하고 있으며, 제 3곡과 제 6곡은 새들과 자연을 그리는데 개인적인 경험을 이야기 하고 있다. 제 5곡은 이 연가곡 중에서 가장 크고 복잡한 곡으로 앞뒤로 더 빠른 템포의 곡들에 둘러싸여 있다. 조성체계를 유지하면서 12음계와 poly chord, 잦은 전조 등으로 모호한 느낌과 현대적인 감각을 더하였고, 제 5곡은 교회 선법으로 작곡하여 시의 엄숙하고 종교적인 분위기를 표현하였다. 각 곡의 시와 선율, 리듬, 화성, 조성, 작곡 기법, 형식 등을 살펴보았고, 반주자의 입장에서 브리튼의 가곡을 어떻게 이해하고 연주해야 하는지 생각해 보았다.|Britten is a composer who made great contributions to the development of English music in the 20th century, leaving us fine music of various genres including instrumental music, vocal music, chorus, opera, ballet music, religious music and film music. Among them, more than 100 pieces of vocal music opened a new chapter of English music, which had been depressed since Henry Purcell (1659?]1695) in the 17th century. In this thesis, <Winter Words, Op. 52>, composed in 1953, Will be analyzed. <Winter Words, Op.52> consists of eight songs based on Thomas Hardy?fs (1840?]1928) poems, satirizing nature and human life. These Hardy?fs poems are rearranged by Britten?fs exquisite and deep literary sense, in his song cycle <Winter Words>. In this song cycle, Britten produces an arch form by tonal system, ordering of the poems, and their musical setting. The first song is in d minor, and the last song is in D major. And those two songs share a mood of emotional reflection. The second song is in c minor, and the 7th song is in C major. And both of the song deal with rail as a text. Songs 3 and 6 depict birds and nature, and both settings are lighter in mood. At the heart of the group are Songs 4 and 5, both descriptive of personal experience. Song 5, the largest and most complex of the group, is preceded and followed by songs of faster tempo. While maintaining the tonal system, Britten uses 12 chromatic scale, poly chord and frequent key changes, vague feelings and modern senses , giving vague adding. In addition, it expressed the solemn and religious atmosphere of the poems by composing in church mode in song 5. The present research examined the poem, melody, rhythm, harmony, tone, composition technique and form of each piece of music, and thought how to understand and perform Britten?fs songs from the accompanist's point of view.
