A Study On The Fashion Design Applying Art Work

Artistic works have a profound influence in fashion history. The development of art is accompanied by the progress of fashion. Combining one form of art with another and recreating it in order to create a new type of work. This kind of work has always been ongoing. The fashion designers can get many creative inspirations from artistic works, share their creative ideas, and apply them to the dress designing. In recent years, the fashion world has constantly been influenced by the traditional Chinese cultures. Although many modern designs exist in the field of fashion design, and many designers integrate the traditional Chinese elements into production and designs, the Chinese elements can only be fully presented in a few works. The Chinese culture is profound, so an excellent designer nowadays must understand the Chinese culture and history in order to understand the essence of it. The purpose of this research is to discuss the way of accurately conveying the traditional Chinese cultures in modern fashion in order to make the traditional Chinese culture play an important role in modern fashion designs. In addition, the fashion designs that combine the traditional Chinese works with the modern fashions will be presented in this thesis.
Firstly, this thesis appreciates some historical works in western culture. In a long history river of western fashion, some artists have broken the exception. Such as the Pop artist “Andy warhol”, he adds his own painting of can into dressing design. And YSL makes Mondrian's “Red, Yellow, Blue” a drtess; Christithis Dior makes Paper-plastic art a dress and regards it as Haute Douture in 2007(S/S). The designer Jil Sander adds Ceramic works by Picasso into costume in 2012.
Western apparel designers were always the main force in the apparel design and lead the updating of times over the past years. However, this situation has been changed gradually. With China' progress, these years Chinese culture has been known and understanded. In some fashion works, Chinese apparel designers break through the traditional method, and they express the definition of traditional ink painting on costume and express the definition of Chinese traditional Zen. For example, they add Chinese characters to express their understanding for Chinese traditional culture, and they combine Chinese embroidery with Western-style clothing. Besides they also apply the pattern of blue and white porcelain in Western wedding dress, which embodies fully the glamour of Chinese traditional culture. Whether the soft silhouette of ceramic, the grandeur of architecture, the purity and elegance of blue-white ceramic and the majesty of red tile in forbidden zone, which all can be applied by designers to their clothing works. Thus combiting with Western culture, the Chinese traditional culture is emphasized, and then a kind of new fashion culture of Chinese design elements and culture can be created and stages on the world stage.
This thesis puts forward some descriptions and instructions for design work. In the works of this thesis, the first design makes traditional Chinese embroidery works present in the clothing works, and the waist decoration design in Hanfu combines the common clothes in modern fashion works; it is innovated. Chinese Embroidery culture had been known to all since many years ago, especially it is the most colorful in the culture of the royal court. Fine gold and silver wire brings the visual impact with a unique color. Each traditional embroider deduces the youth of history with unique flavor. Western-style version of the design adds Chinese pattern, dark green is the main color in whole design. It can also be a good foil embroidery pattern. An art melts perfectlly fashion.
The second design adds Elements of traditional Chinese ink painting into common uniform design. On the soft feeling of gauze “Not much if any”, it melt the special flavor of ink painting. The gauze printed by traditional ink painting works conbinates with common clothes. The gauze is gently attached to the soft and beautiful form of women, which well highlights the rhythmic beauty of ink painting. Also the ancient Chinese Zen presents slightly the charm “Ning, Jing, Zhiyuan” When traditional ink painting goes with modern clothing well, the western smoke-blue cloth is simply cut, matching the ink color of plum blossoms interspersed with white and red in ink painting. Chinese culture melts with western elegance well, which makes them complementone another and specials.
The third one is designed as a dress, combining the blue and white porcelain and fan cheongsam collar, which is the complement of the western version. One of those blue and white porcelains is the most representative work of contemporary Chinese culture. Its elegance and beautiful appearance is famous at home and abroad. And its elegance is expressed by adding a fan. The texture of the western wedding dress is combined with the white tulle and the white dress with the blue petticoat to give the white porcelain softness, which emphasizes the symbol of the woman.
The fourth design makes use of the ancient elements of Chinese works. Apart from having made the design on the clothing outer outline modelling, it also makes a unique fabric reconstruction design in the silhouette of the coat, which also combined with the form of the Ruff collar in the classical European modeling, the fabric reconstruction is made to reflect the unique cornices modeling characteristics of Chinese ancient buildings. The design features of traditional ancient buildings are applied in the clothing. The design features of traditional ancient buildings are applied in the clothing, the ancient Oriental elements are added with the western fabric technology, and the Chinese and western cultures integrated one another. The ancient Oriental elements combine with the western fabric technology, and the Chinese and western cultures melt with each other.
These years, Chinese traditional culture has continuously showed impact on fashion industry in the world. However, in the field of fashion design, although there are modern design works, many designers add Chinese traditional elements into production and design. But only a small number of works can reflect Chinese elements perfectly. Chinese culture is deep and profound, but everything is precious, it's essence must be learned. Therefore, people use Chinese elements blindly, but the Chinese culture meaning itself is not easy to express precisely.
The ultimate aim of fashion is bound to be art. Designers express themselves with their works; artworks also express their value to the world by themselves. Every good work of art has its own soul and label. Fashion is not just a commercial product but a good art work. Currently, young Chinese designers are attempting to study Chinese traditional culture deeply and carefully. People must learn the meaning of it, cultivate the way to combine Chinese traditional culture with Western fashion philosophy, and promote Chinese culture to the world properly in combination with contemporary characteristics. Instead, people should not blindly add traditional Chinese elements to costume works.
