18세기 후반 물기재 강응환의 관방지도에 관한 연구

Abstract

17세기 전반 정묘호란과 병자호란을 일으킨 여진족이 1644년 중국을 정복하고 청나라를 건설한 이후 중국 각지에서 반란이 연속되자 조선은 청의 만주 회귀에 대한 위기에 휩싸이게 되었다. 이에 따라 조선은 청나라와의 국경지대, 그리고 만주지역에 대한 관심 및 지리정보 파악에 특별한 관심을 기울이게 되었다. 조선시대에 관방지도의 제작은 조선 초기부터 시작되었으며, 특히 중국과 국경을 접하고 있는 북쪽 변경 지방의 지도가 많이 제작되었다. 17세기 이후 조선의 대청 인식과 북방인식 변화가 관방정책에도 영향을 주었다. 또한 새로운 관방정책은 평안도와 함경도지역의 관방시설 확충으로 연결되었으며, 이에 따라 많은 관방지도가 제작되었다. 본 논문은 18세기 후반에 평안도 창성부사와 경상좌도수군절도사를 지낸 물기재 강응환(姜膺煥, 1735~1795)이 제작한 관방지도(關防地圖)인《청북변성도(淸北邊城圖)》와《고려중요처도(高麗重要處圖)》의 형태와 내용을 파악하는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 지도에 표현된 지형, 형태, 크지, 지명, 촌락, 군사적 시설 등을 구체적으로 분석하였다. 또한 18세기의 사회적 변화와 대외관계를 통해서 18세기 후반에 제작된 강응환의 관방지도를 검토하였다. 강응환의 관방지도들은 창성부사와 경상좌도수군절도사라는 현직에 있던 최고 담당자가 제작한 원형을 보여 준다는 점에서 의의가 크다. 또한 영조대의 《서북피아양계만리일람지도(西北彼我兩界萬里一覽之圖)》《서북계도(西北界圖)》《성경여지전도(盛京輿地全圖)》등과 같이 조선의 국경지대와 만주일대를 개괄적으로 그린 군사지도로부터 한 단계 진전되어 매우 구체적이고 세밀하게 군사적 요충지를 그린 미시적 지도라는 점에서도 중요하다. 이러한 지도들이 조선시대에 많이 제작되었을 것으로 짐작되지만 현전하는 지도가 매우 귀하기 때문에 강응환의 지도들은 관방지도의 역사에서, 그리고 조선후기의 군사정책과 관방인식을 보여주는 매우 중요한 의미를 지닌다. |After Jurchen tribe (女眞) brought about two wars against Joseon dynasty in Korean peninsula in the first half of 17th century (Jeongmyo- horan and Byeongja-horan), and conquered China to establish Ching dynasty in 1644, there were a chain of revolts rising around every corner of hing, while Joseon was thronged with a rumor of potential crisis resulting from Ching dynasty seeking to return to anchuria. That is why Joseon dynasty began to pay special ttentions to identify its frontier adjacent to Ching Empire (especially Manchuria) and relevant geographic information. In Joseon dynasty, maps for defence and borderlands were already prepared in the early days of dynasty, and many barriers based on maps prepared in the early Joseon dynasty were installed to defend vulnerable northern frontier of Joseon from the force of Ching. In the 17th century, oseon's changing standpoints toward Ching and northern frontier had influences even on its national frontier policies. Moreover, a new paradigm shift of Joseon's national frontier policies led to expansion of frontier installations in Pyeongan and Hamgyeong province, while there were a lot of national defence maps prepared. The purpose of this study was to identify geographic configuration and content of ‘Cheongbuk Byeonseong-do (淸北邊城圖, Map of Frontier Fortresses North of Cheongchon River)’ and ‘Goryeo Jung-yocheo-do (高麗重要處圖, Coastal Map of Gyeongsang Province)’ which were 2 national frontier maps authored by Mulgijae Kang Eung-hwan (姜膺煥, 1735～1795) who was appointed a navy commander in charge of Western Gyeongsang Provincial Fleet in the late 18th century. To meet the goal, this study made further analysis on topography, configuration, scale, place names, villages, military installations and more which are expressed in the said maps. In addition, it examined Kang's national frontier maps prepared in the late 18th century in terms of Joseon's social change and diplomacy in 18th century. It is particularly notable that Kang's national frontier maps demonstrate a prototype of military mapping conducted in his capacity of incumbent Changseong county governor as well as navy commander of Western Gyeongsang Provincial Fleet. In addition, his national frontier maps have implications in the sense that they evolved a step forward from conventional military maps outlining Joseon's northwest frontier and Manchuria region (for example, Seobukpiayanggye Malliilam-jido (西北彼我兩界萬里一覽之圖), Seobukgye-do (西北界圖), Seonggyeong Yeoji-jeondo (盛京輿地全圖), etc prepared in the era of King Yeongjo), and were also microscopic maps depicting very concrete and detailed military strategic locations of northern national frontier in the late 18th century when King Jeongjo ruled Joseon dynasty.
