- A Study on Simulation Expression in Modern Fashion : Focused on 2001~2006 Fashion Collection
- Abstract
- Countless symbols created by digital media today are the new cultural characteristics of our time, the post-modern information society. Mutual combination of symbols beyond logic creates meanings that are not related to reality but even go beyond reality to dominate the reality.
These phenomena of post-modern society are explained by the Simulation Theory of Jean Baudrillard, a French socialist. Simulation refers to ‘the virtual and unreal.’ Simulation with no reality is hyper-reality that is more realistic than the reality and refers to making the new imitation that is logically unrelated to the essence of subjects.
Today, we can experience the effect of simulation in every aspect of society that uses symbols, such as digital media, philosophy, aesthetics, art, sociology, economy, and politics. However, no substantial study has been conducted in fashion even thought it is the symbolic image and cultural medium of a time.
This study aimed to examine the theoretical background of simulation as the post-modern ideology of the 20th century and understand how the characteristics of simulation that are viable in sociocultural phenomena are shown in modern fashion. Also, changes in symbolic characteristics, distribution, and fluctuation of simulation in fashion and trends of simulation’s symbols in modern fashion to forecast how simulation could work in fashion in the future.
This study used an integrative method of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. In qualitative analysis, related references and dissertations were analyzed to derive characteristics of simulation in modern fashion which were then examined for feasibility through quantitative analysis.
The periodical range of this study was set to six years of collections from the 2001 S/S Collections to the 2006 F/W Collections. Also, 2001 to 2002 was set to Season 1, 2003 to 2004 to Season 2, and 2005 to 2006 to Season 3. Characteristics of simulation in each season were classified according to the categories of analysis based on photographic resources and the classifications were tabulated using statistical measures. Based on the results of analysis, several literatures and preceded studies were examined to verify the feasibility of simulation in modern fashion and understand distribution and fluctuation of characteristics by season, fashion style, or use of symbols.
The course of this study is as follows:
First, preceded studies were examined to define the concepts and types of simulation as well as its theoretical backgrounds and characteristics as symbolic images. It is also examined how simulation is displayed in culture and sculpture.
Second, it was examined how simulation is displayed in modern fashion and what are its characteristics. Third, fashion photographs from the 2001-2006 collections were classified by characteristics of simulation and analyzed by characteristics and season in the aspects of syntax, meaning, and practicality, the three aspects of symbolic procedures. Fourth, characteristics and distribution of simulation in modern fashion based on the above results of analysis were understood.
Based on the results of this study
First, it was found that the distribution of wardrobes affected by simulation was increasing throughout the period observed. In Season 3, simulation symbols were no longer concentrated in one category, but were distributed in similar ratios. Combination of symbols happened in harmonious ways rather than conflicting ways, because symbols were combined to pursue multiple meanings in more matured styles.
Second, structural expressions clearly decreased in Season 3 compared to Season 2. This means that simulation’s expressions are aesthetically converting from post-modern destruction to new digital paradigms.
Third, among several categories, categories related to time and past were most widely distributed. This showed that the retro trends to overcome human isolation and reinterpret the present time by recreating the past using technologies and information explosion are widely spread in the simulation aspects of fashion.
