한·영 미신 중 경계문에 대한 문화적 접근

Abstract

외국어 교육의 궁극적인 목표는 언어 습득을 통한 원활한 의사소통에 있다고 할 수 있다. 그런데 언어 습득이라고 하는 것은 단순히 언어의 문법 체계, 어휘, 발음과 같은 언어의 형태에 대해 익숙해지는 것만을 뜻하는 것이 아니라 그 언어가 사용되는 사회의 문화에 대한 이해도 함께 이루어지는 것을 뜻한??. 왜냐하면 언어는 사회의 문화적 가치관을 반영하며, 언어와 문화는 상호 간에 불가분의 관계를 맺고 서로 영향을 끼치며 발달해 왔기 때문이다. 따라서 학습자들이 주어진 언어 정보의 의미를 제대로 파악하기 위해서는 그 언어의 문화에 대한 지도가 필수적이다. 문화를 효과적으로 지도하기 위한 방법과 자료는 다양하지만, 본 논문은 미신을, 특히 경계문(警戒文)을 선택하였다. 미신은 학습의 흥미를 쉽게 유발시키며 일상 생활에서 널리 언어로 표현되거나 행동으로 나타난다. 그 중에서도 경계문은 좋지 않은 일이 일어나지 않도록 사람들에게 어떤 특정한 행동을 경계시키거나 금하는 표현으로서, 사람들에게 매우 강한 영향을 미치며 그 사회의 풍습과 종교, 사고 방식 등을 가장 잘 반영한 것이기 때문이다. 따라서 본인은 우리 미신과 영미 미신 중 인간의 기본적인 생활과 밀접한 경계문을 골라 내용별로 분류하여, 그 속에 반영되어 있는 우리 문화와 영미 문화를 비교 분석해 보았다. 우선 먼저 우리 나라 사람과 영미인의 사고 방식과 생활 양식 등을 통해 우리 문화와 영미 문화에 대해 개괄적으로 고찰해 보고, 그 뒤 이것을 바탕으로 각 문화의 미신을 비교하는 방식을 택했다. 우리 나라와 영미 미신을 살펴보면, 그 표현 방식은 달라도 내용이 비슷한 미신이 있었고, 내용이 전혀 상반되거나 한쪽 문화에는 존재하지만 다른 한쪽에는 존재하지 않는 미신도 있었다. 비슷한 미신이 존재하는 것은 동서양을 막론하고 누구나가 인간의 보편적인 특성을 가지고 있기 때문일 것이고, 상이한 미신은 각각의 특별한 환경 속에서 발생한 독특한 사고 방식을 비롯한 문화의 차이에서 나온 것이다. 미신은 학생들의 흥미를 유발시킬 수 있고 또한 그 미신이 사용되는 사회, 문화적인 맥락까지 익히게 하여 외국어로서 영어를 학습할 때에 많은 도움이 될 것이다. 따라서 진정한 의미의 의사소통 능력을 개발하기 위해서 문화의 지도가 수반되어야 한다는 입장에서 볼 때, 영어 학습자와 교사들, 그리고 일반 영어 사용자들의 미신에 대한 보다 깊은 이해가 강조되며, 미신이 유용한 학습 자료로서 적극 활용되기를 바란다.|A successful cross-cultural communication, the ultimate goal of learning or teaching a foreign language, can never be accomplished without understanding thoroughly the socio-cultural backgrounds of the target language. Language and culture being closely related and interwoven, we should comprehend its culture as well as its linguistic structure and usage in order to learn a foreign language efficiently. The superstitions in a language must be one of many integral parts of its own culture because they have been made over hundreds of years by many kinds of people in different walks of life, and they are still in wide use. The deeper understanding and more proper use of superstitions will help the learners attain a successful intercultural communication. In this study an attempt has been made to give comparative explanations about two different cultures, Korean and American. With the introduction in this study, the correlation between language and culture has been mentioned, which is the basis for the study on the relation of superstitions and their cultures. Next, the comprehensive survey has been done on Korean and Western Cultures including the ways of thinking and living. And then this thesis deals with superstitious expressions and their cultures, showing a comparative study on Korean and English superstitions, especially the expressions that forbid certain acts, which have the greatest effect on the behaviors of the people and reflect most their way of thinking, customs, religions, and so on in a society. In many cases, compared with English superstitions, Korean ones are almost the same in their meaning but different in the way of expressions. That's because all humans have some common traits regardless of their cultures. On the other hand, some expressions in one language have the contradictory meaning, or not been seen in the other language, which, I think, have resulted from their own distinctive cultures. Finally, the comparative analysis is followed by the concluding remarks. Superstition is living relics of ways of thought and expressions. A knowledge of it will enable second language learners to have a positive attitude toward the target language and lead to a better understanding of its culture. In view of the important role of cultural knowledge, I hope this thesis will be of use to our English education for a better cultural understanding and enhanced communicative competence.
