포괄적 접근을 통한 미니멀 음악 지도 방법 연구 : 스티브 라이히(Steve Reich) 작품을 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문은 고등학교 학교수업에서 20세기 현대음악 중 미니멀 음악을 학생들이 보다 이해하기 쉽도록 포괄적 접근을 통한 지도방법에 대해서 연구하고자 하였다. 아직도 18·19세기 음악을 중심으로 수업하고 있는 실정에서 최근에는 20세기 음악을 활용한 수업에 대한 연구가 급증하고 있다. 이는 21세기를 향하여 가고 있는 지금, 누적된 과거의 역사뿐만 아니라 20세기의 다양한 사건들과 문화를 이해함으로써 현재를 알 수 있고 나아가 미래를 개척하는 밑거름이 된다는 인식 때문이다. 미니멀리즘은 현대를 살아가는 사람들의 생활을 반영하는 하나의 시대적 양상이라 할 수 있다. 미니멀리즘은 미술에서부터 발생한 것으로 작가의 주관을 최대한 배제하여 최소한의 소재를 가지고 반복의 기법을 사용하였다. 본 논문에서는 미니멀 작품들을 영상자료로 활용하여 학생들에게 흥미를 유발하고 미니멀 음악에 접근을 유도하였다. 1960년대에서 1970년대 중반 미국의 뉴욕에서 형성된 미니멀 음악은 최소한의 제한된 소재를 기본 패턴으로 삼아 반복과 변형의 과정 지닌다. 일정한 패턴이 지속되는 과정 그 자체로의 음악 개념은 기존의 음악이 가지고 있는 반복의 의미와 다른 차원이다. 이에 미니멀 작곡가들의 작품을 통하여 공통된 특징과 작곡가 나름대로의 독특한 특징을 살펴봄으로써 실질적인 이해를 도모하였다. 미니멀 음악의 주요 작곡가는 라 몬테 영(La Monte Young 1935- ), 테리 라일리(Terry Riley 1935- ), 스티브 라이히(Steve Reich; 1936- ), 필립 글래스(Philip Glass 1937- ) 등이 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 미니멀 음악 작곡가 중 미니멀 음악의 특징이 잘 드러난 스티브 라이히의 초기 작품인 ＜Clapping Music＞와 ＜Drumming＞을 활용하여 교수-학생 지도안을 제시하였다. 학생들이 보다 쉽게 접근하기 위해 기존에 알고 있는 곡을 접목하여 연주, 감상, 가창, 창작 등 다양하게 접근한다. 또한, 다른 시대의 작품들을 비교함으로 공통점과 차이점을 발견할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 사티(Satie)의 ＜짐노페디- Gymnope´die＞와 라벨(Ravel)의 ＜볼레로- Bole´ro＞를 예로 들었다. 사티의 짐노페디는 비슷한 반주 리듬 음형이 곡 처음부터 끝까지 나오면서 특별한 클라이맥스 없이 작고 차분하게 연주되어 다이내믹이 억제되어 있는 것에 초점을 맞추었다. 라벨의 볼레로에서는 곡 전반적으로 흐르는 작은북의 볼레로 리듬이 거의 변화 없이 반복되는 특징을 비교하였다. 단순하면서도 밝은 음색을 가지고 있는 미니멀 음악의 주관성을 배제하고 일정한 패턴을 가지고 반복과 변형하는 모습은 대중음악이나 영화음악에서도 찾아 볼 수 있다. 이와 같이, 미니멀 음악은 대중 매체 음악에도 지대한 영향을 미쳐 우리 생활 주변에 가까이 존재하고있다.|In this thesis, I studied methods to teach high school students about 20th century's modern Minimal music. While our music classes still focus on 18th and 19th century's music, studies about using 20th century's music for education are increasing. In thinking about the 21st century, we can understand the present better and set the foundation for the future by understanding diverse events and culture of the 20th century. Minimalism can be used to show the way of modern life style. Minimalism began with paintings and limited the subjectivity of artists and used a repeated pattern. These works can be used as visual methods to attract students' attention and developed a broader interest in Minimalism, such as in Minimal music. Minimal music, which started in New York in 1960s and 1970s, uses limited subjects as the basic pattern and illustrates repetition and variation. In Minimalism, the process of repetition with a certain pattern is surely different from the repetition of previously established music. Through looking into the works of Minimalism composers, I tried to understand the common features and distinctive characters of them. Examples of well-known Minimal musicians are La monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass, and so on. I tried to utilize Steve Reich's early works, "Clapping Music" and "Drumming", which show us the feature of Minimal music, to make teaching plans. And then, I also used more familiar music for diverse activities, such as performance, appreciation, singing, and creation. Furthermore, I compared it with music from different periods to think about similarities and differences. Here, I used Satie's "Gymnope´die" and Ravel's "Bole´ro" as examples. In the case of Satie's "Gymnopedie", I focused on the repetition of similar rhythms and the quiet and restrained atmosphere without clear climax. In the case of Ravel's "Bolero", I thought about the repetition of the Bolero rhythm with a side drum. Minimal music having a simple and bright tune, limits subjectivity and repeats or varies its pattern. And this structure can be found in pop music or original sound track of movies. Thus, Minimal music also has a great impact on pop music around us.
