폐 포장지 캐스팅을 통해 본 현대사회의 단면

Abstract

본 논문은 2003년부터 제작한 본인의 작품 중에 2004년 석사학위 청구전에 전시하였던 폐 포장지 펄프 캐스팅 작품 ‘ ’연작을 중심으로 이 작품들에 나타난 내용적 측면과 형식적 측면을 연구하고 분석하여 정리한 것이다. 본인의 작품은 사회의 대량생산과 대량소비 문화에서 파생되는 폐 포장지를 종이 캐스팅의 재료로 사용하였다. 현대사회를 살아가는 사회 구성원들은 바쁘게 자심들의 일상적 삶을 살면서 대량 생산되는 패스트푸드를 소비한다. 현대인들은 그들의 삶의 방식에서 패스트푸드의 편리함에 어느 정도 익숙해 있으며 또한 그 신속함을 누리고 있기도 하다. 본인은 이러한 편리함과 신속함 등 현대성을 대변하는 것으로 일회용품과 폐 포장지에 주목하였다. 특히 폐 포장지 표면에 인쇄된 상표의 화려함과 각종 문구들이 현대를 살아가는 우리들의 모습을 상징적으로 보여준다고 생각하였다. 또한 본인은 펄프 캐스팅 작품의 재료로 사용된 폐 포장지가 우리의 삶과 밀접한 관련을 가지고 있는 상징체로 보았으며, 특히 폐 포장지를 작게 자르고 고해하는 과정을 거쳐서 현대의 각종 일회성 용품들을 버릴 수 있는 쓰레기통으로 만드는 행위를 통해서 폐품의 용도를 다시 살려서 활용하는 물질의 리사이클이라는 측면과 함께 사회적 측면에서 볼 때 현대성의 어두운 부분을 상징하는 폐 포장지 그 자체가 폐휴지를 담을 수 있는 쓰레기통화 함으로써 자기반성적 태도를 강조하고자 하였다. 본 논문은 다음과 같은 내용을 담고 있다. 본인의 캐스팅 작품은 종이로 떠내어진 쓰레기통의 형식을 취하므로 우선 소재로서 종이가 가질 수 있는 새로운 해석에 대해 살펴보았다. 판화에 있어서 paper-making과 미술 전반에서 종이가 지닌 예술매체로서의 가능성을 살펴보았다. 또한 본인의 작품에서 폐 포장지와 대량생산 대량소비 문화의 관계와 패스트푸드 점에서의 폐 포장지를 도입하게 된 동기로서 현대성의 특징과 그 상징적 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 그리고 폐 포장지를 사용하여 쓰레기통으로 만드는 작품 과정에서 물성의 변화와 반복되어 나타난 쓰레기통에서 전달하고자 하는 의미에 대하여 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 본인 작품에 있어서 폐 포장지의 리사이클링과 관련하여 사용된 종이 캐스팅 방법과 본인 작품에서 나타나는 독특한 조형성과 표현 방법을 알아보고자 하였다.|This thesis studies and analyzes the formal and conceptual aspects of ' ' series, scraps of wrapper-pulp casting works for the 2004 exhibition of master degree among my works made from 2003. The work adopted waste-wrappers from the mass-produced and consumed culture of modern society as the materials of paper casting. In modern society, people lives a busy daily life and consumes the mass produced fast foods. And they`re also used to the convenience of them and enjoy the speed of them in lifestyle. Therefore, I am concentrated on the waste-wrappers and disposable products represented the modernity such as the convenience and speed mentioned above. I thought the flourish of brands and lots of texts printed on waste-wrappers especially represented modern society people symbolically. In addition, I regarded the waste-wrappers which are used as the materials of pulp casting works as a symbol related with our lives deeply and especially, I tried to focus on the self- reflection that the waste-wrappers represented the dark side of modernity became to garbage cans which put the wastes and also focus on the recycling aspects of materials through the cutting process of waste-wrappers and the reconstructing them into a garbage can which is able to put the disposable products. This thesis includes this contents. My casting works have the form of garbage can from papers and so it explores new interpretations of paper as materials. And it also explores paper` s possibilities as a art-media in general art and paper-making in printmaking. Furthermore, I tried to study the symbolic meaning and modernity as a stimulation adopted waste-wrappers from fast food-restaurants and the relations between waste-wrappers and mass-produced and consumed culture. And I studied the change of materiality in the process making gabage cans used waste-wrappers and the meaning of the garbage cans shown repeatedly. Finally, I studied the way of paper casting related with the recycling of waste-wrappers, the way of expression and the unique formative- elements in my work.
