패턴적인 건축구조를 통한 도시 풍경의 형상화연구: 본인의 작품을 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문은 2015년도 석사 청구전에서 ‘패턴적인 성향의 도시 풍경’을 주제로 전시된 본인의 작품을 중심으로 표현 형식과 내용을 심층적으로 연구하고, 그 의미에 대해 서술한 글이다.

본인은 고등학교에 진학하면서 개발이 활발한 도시로 주거지를 이동하였다. 이에 따라 일상을 둘러싸고 있는 시각적인 풍경과 라이프스타일의 변화를 경험하며 도시에 주목하기 시작하였다.

한국의 수도인 서울에서는 근대화 이후 산업의 전환 과정에서 농촌인구의 대규모 유입에 따라 주택문제가 발생했고, 이를 해결하기 위해 정부에서는 1960년대부터 본격적으로 도시계획을 진행하였다. 급격한 도시화가 진행되는 과정에서 서구의 근대건축양식이 도입되는데, 이에 따라 공간과 건축이 질서와 규칙에 맞춰 체계적으로 분할되면서 현재의 패턴화된 도시경관이 형성 되었다. 그 결과 도시에서 생활하는 사람들의 삶에도 많은 변화가 생겼다.

본인은 도시의 공간과 구조물에서 발견할 수 있는 패턴적인 특성과 도시에서 반복되는 일상에 익숙해진 사람들의 상호 관계에 대해 주목하고, 이를 작품을 통해 시각적으로 표현할 수 있는 방법을 탐구하였다. 도시의 풍경은 복합적이고 다양해 보이지만, 자세히 관찰해 보면 반복적이고 규격화된 형상을 띠고 있다. 이러한 특성은 특히 대형 아파트 단지, 오피스 건축물을 구성하는 건축적인 구조에서 찾아 볼 수 있다. 또한 도시에서 생활하는 사람들의 삶에서도 반복적이고 규격화된 특성을 발견할 수 있는데, 이는 도시사회구조의 영향 아래 사람들이 점차 유사한 사고와 행동양식에 노출되었기 때문이다. 이에 따라 본인은 전술한 문제의식을 도시 건축의 패턴적인 구조를 활용하여 형상화하고, 이를 통해 도시환경과 사회의 모습을 되돌아보고 성찰할 수 있는 계기를 마련하고자 한다.

본 논문에서는 시대를 막론하여 본인과 유사한 관점에서 도시에 대한 관심을 공유한 작가들과 작품을 연구하고, 본인 작품과의 비교 분석을 통해 도시에 대한 관점이 어떻게 시각적으로 표현 되어왔는지 알아볼 것이다. 특히 본인이 중점적으로 관심을 두고 있는 건축적인 구조를 통한 화면구성, 반복적인 표현 등 작품의 조형적 특성과 표현 형식의 분석을 통해 작품의 의미를 도출하며, 본인 작업의 내용을 더욱 견고히 하려 한다.

본인은 본 논문을 통하여 현대 도시의 풍경과 그 안에서 생활하는 사람들의 고충을 살펴보고, 현대 도시의 삶 속에서 감성적인 요소와 개성이 더욱 표출될 수 있는 삶으로의 전환을 고찰할 것이다. 이에 따라 사회와 도시환경 속에서 인간 고유의 특성이 망각되지 않도록 사람들에게 경각심을 일깨우는데 의의를 두고자 한다.|This study made an in-depth research of my works and described the meaning, in terms of expression form and content, exhibited under the theme of “Urban landscape with patterned disposition” in the Exhibition for Obtainment of Master's degree in 2015.

On entering high school, I moved to a city in which active development was in progress. Hence, I started to pay attention to urban aspects because I was exposed to visual landscape surrounding my daily life and I was experiencing the changes of life style.

In Seoul, the capital of Korea, housing problems occurred due to the large-scale inflow of rural population into the city in the transition period of industry posterior to modernization. So as to solve this problem, the government proceeded with urban planning in earnest since the 1960s. In the process of rapid urbanization, modern architectural style was introduced from the West. For this reason, the space and architecture were systematically divided in accordance with order and rules and arrived to form today's patterned urban landscape. As a result, the life of people living in the city went through many changes as well.

I paid attention to the correlation between patterned characteristics observed in the urban space and buildings and people who are accustomed to the repeated daily life in the city, and I began to explore how to visually express this phenomenon. City landscape looks complicated and diversified but when we carefully observe it, we can find that the city has repetitive and standardized forms. This kind of feature can be found, in particular, in architectural structures such as large-scale apartment complex and office buildings. Moreover, it is possible to equally find these repetitive and standardized features in the life of urban people. It is because they are exposed to similar thinking and behavior style under the gradual influences of the structure of the urban society. Therefore, I intend to embody the previously mentioned critical mind based on patterned structure of urban architecture. Through this attempt, I intend to create a new momentum for reflecting on urban environment and our society for further introspection.

This study will inquire into artists and their works who have shared the interest in the city from the similar viewpoint as mine regardless of time. In addition, this study will make a comparative analysis between their works and mine so as to analyze how the viewpoint of the city has been manifested so far in the visual way. In particular, based on the analysis of the formative features and expression method of works such as screen composition and repetitive expression through architectural structure which belongs to my key interest, I aim to draw the meaning of the works and strengthen the content of my works as well.

In this study, I will inquire about urban landscape as well as the distress of people who live in the city, and I will consider the possibility of transformation of life enabling the clearer manifestation of emotional elements and individuality in the urban life style. Accordingly, this study will have significance in the sense that it can raise awareness of people not to forget the intrinsic human traits even living in today's society and urban environment.
