판화매체로서의 넌 실버 프린트 (Non-silver print) 기법의 연구

Abstract

우리는 디지털 이미지 속에서 살고 있다. 현대는 디지털 이미지 홍수의 시대라 해도 과언이 아니다. 판화와 사진 또한 판과 필름이라는 중간매체를 사용하지 않는 디지털 프린트 작업이 활발히 진행되어지고 있는 실정이다. 판화와 사진은 편리성과 첨단매체의 유혹으로 인하여 본래의 특성과 존재가치를 잃고 왜곡되어지는 부분이 있는데 이러한 현실 속에서 바로 인식시키는 계기로서의 의미를 되짚어 보고자 하는 것이 본 논문의 목적이다. 본 논문은 19세기 사진 인화 방법에 속하는 프린트 기법인 넌 실버 프린트(Non-silver print)를 통하여 그 기법 안에서 회화적 요소를 찾아 판화에 적용시켜 활용하는 것을 중점으로 다뤘다. 과거 고전적인 프린트 기법인 넌 실버 프린트는 사진 기법의 발명과 함께 발전하였으나 사진적 특성 이외에도 판화적, 회화적 특성을 갖추고 있으므로 이 요소를 현재 판화 작업에 접목시켜 적용시킨다면 판화적 영역을 보다 더 확장시킬 수 있으리라 생각한다. 각 장에서는 빠르게 진행 되어지는 디지털 이미지 속에서 지극히 수공적인 넌 실버 프린트의 현대적 의미를 연구했고 넌 실버 프린트 기법을 주된 매체로 사용했던 19세기 회화주의 사진 운동(pictorial photography movement)에 대하여 고찰하였다. 그리고 넌 실버 프린트 기법들 중에서 시아노타입(cyanotype), 반다이크 브라운(van dyke brown) 그리고 검 바이크로메이트 프린트(gum bichromate print) 기법의 진행과정과 특성에 대하여 설명하였으며 또한 넌 실버 프린트 기법을 판화와 접목시켜 활용할 수 있는 예들을 도판과 함께 제시하였다. 결론적으로 본 논문에서는 과거 수공적이고 고전적인 사진 프린트 기법인 넌 실버 프린트 기법을 통하여 디지털 이미지가 범람하고 있는 현 시점에서 수공적이며 장인적인 작업 과정의 의미에 대하여 다시 한번 고찰해 보고 판화에 있어서의 확장과 도약을 위해 넌 실버 프린트의 판화적 요소를 제시하며 그 활용 방법을 연구하였다.|We are living in digital images. It can be said that the modern times is the age flooded with digital images. Even in printmaking and photography, digital print which does not use the intermediate media of print and film is rapidly on the increase. This study aims to raise awareness of the values of printmaking and photography and reestablish their status in life as they are losing their original qualities and existence value and are being distorted as they are subject to the temptation of convenience and digital high tech. Thus, this study addresses non-silver print process, one of the 19th century photography print methods to identify its pictorial elements and widely utilize it by applying the elements to printmaking. Non-silver print, a classical print method in the past, retains the printmaking and pictorial qualities as well as photographic qualities as it developed in the times of photography invention. Thus, application and integration of these elements to the present printmaking could contribute to the expansion of the area of printmaking. Each chapter examines the pictorial photography movement in the 19th century which employed non-silver print technique, and explores the procedures and characteristics of cyanotype, van dyke brown and gum bichromate print among many methods of non-silver print technique. Further, it visits the modern meanings of non-silver print technique which is much more of manual art in the vortex of overflowing digital images at fast pace, and presents examples with several plates of print which could in use by being integrated into printmaking. In conclusion, this study revisits the meaning of artisan's manual work processes in the age of overflowing digital images through non-silver print technique, a classical manual photography print method in the past. It also addresses pictorial elements of non-silver print technique for the sake of expansion and progress and researches ways to utilize the elements.
