Abstract

This study, which is a survey, was conducted due to problems that aroused based upon actual experiences of hesitation of purchasing an expensive performance of a famous musician. The purpose of this study is to pin-point the barrier that prevents the public, especially aged twenty to forty, from being exposed to classical music. This study points out the theoretical importance of classical music and of art education by examining research articles, media articles, and a public survey. Also compared the current culture of classical music performances in Korea to the current culture of classical music performances in Western countries, where classical music was first established. This was achieved by interviewing individuals from schools, public locations, and offices of various companies in Seoul. Interviewee ages ranged from early-twenties to mid-forties. The content and the results of the questionnaire used for this survey are following. 1. With a total of 191 interviewers, 67 individuals were in their twenties, 61 individuals were in their thirties, 63 were individuals in their forties which points out the abundance of interviewers in their twenties. 2. When examining the cultural life of the public, the interviewers that were in their twenties mostly claimed to experience a cultural life in approximately every once a month while interviewers in their thirties and forties mostly claimed to experience a cultural life in approximately every once in three to four months. The type of genre that was preferred among all ages of the interviewers was movies. However as the age of the interviewers increased, their preference of genre gradually shifted from movies towards plays and classical music performances. The most common opinion of preference of certain genres were based upon ‘a prices that is economically affordable.’ 3. Focusing the interest in classical music, most interviewers had an impression of classical music as ‘a cultural experience which is educational and intellectual.’ However, contrasting to their high interest in classical music, most interviewers were familiar with very little number of classical musicians. 4. Among the various opinions from the interviewers regarding classical music performance tickets, some claimed that they would not attend the concert if the tickets are too expensive regardless of the famous performer. They also claimed that they envied individuals that were not financially affected by the expensive concert ticket prices. Some also claimed that expensive classical music performances symbolized the privilege of upper class. Especially, the idealistic concert ticket price among these interviewers revealed to be extremely deviated from the ticket prices of recent concerts of famous performers． The expensive concert ticket prices produced a great wall for the public audience, and made the public audience to realistically feel distanced and apprehensive to classical music performances. In conclusion, in order to allow classical music performances to become an active cultural experience among the public and to further allow the public to gain this rewarding cultural experience, the problems of pricy concert tickets must be resolved.
