코메니우스의 교육사상 : 『법교육』을 중심으로

Abstract

영문초록: p. 64-67|코메니우스(Johann Amos Comenius, 1592~1670)는 17세기의 교육철학자로서 근대교육의 선구적인 교육 개혁가이다. 이 논문은 20세기에 와서야 발견된 그의 저서 『범교육』(Pampaedia)에 나타난 그의 교육사상을 밝히고 그것이 현대 교육에 주는 시사점을 도출해 내는데 있다. 연구 방법은 문헌 연구로서, 코메니우스의 대표적인 저서인 『범교육』을 중심으로 하고, 『대교수학』과 『분석교육학』 등을 참고로 활용하였으며, 그밖에 국내외의 코메니우스 교육사상 관련 저서와 논문을 참고로 하였다. 연구 내용은 코메니우스 사상의 기저가 된 철학·신학·과학 사상의 형성 배경, 『범교육』의 구성과 내용, 코메니우스의 인간관·교육목적·교육내용·교육방법·범학교론을 고찰하여, 현대교육에 시사하는 바를 제시하였다. 그는 인간을 신의 가장 중요한 피조물로 이해하였으며, 인간의 최고의 경지는 지식, 자기통제, 신에로의 지향, 즉 이성·덕성·경건성을 갖춘 상태로 보고 이를 교육적인 인간상으로 강조하였다. 그가 설정한 교육목적은 모든 인간으로 하여금 모든 사물에 대한 지식을 배우고, 덕성과 신앙의 훈련을 받게 하여 현세와 내세의 생활을 위하여 필요한 모든 것을 준비할 수 있도록 하는데 있었다. 따라서 교육내용은 지식교육, 도덕교육, 신앙교육으로 집약되며 범교육은 이 세 가지 내용이 통합과 조화를 이루어야 가능하다고 보았다. 교육방법은 자연의 질서에 따르는 교육을 택하였으며, 분석적 방법, 종합적 방법, 혼합적 방법을 강조하였다. 범학교론에서 코메니우스는 인간의 삶이 태내에서부터 시작하여 사망한 후의 내세로까지 이어진다고 보고, 인간의 일생을 발달 단계에 따라 여덟 단계로 나누었다. 그리고 각 단계별로 교육이 이루어지는 장을 모두 '학교'로 표현하였으며, 각 학교에서 다루어야 할 내용과 방법을 구체적으로 제시하였다. 코메니우스의 범교육사상은 교육의 모든 것을 포괄하고 있다. 빈부·성별·지위에 관계없이 모든 인간을 대상으로 해야 하며, 지성·덕성·신앙을 배양하기 위해 자연 세계에 존재하고 있는 모든 것을 가르쳐야 하며, 도움이 되는 모든 방법을 동원하여 가르치는 것이다. 즉 모든 사람에게 모든 내용을 모든 방법으로 가르치는 것이다. 그의 범교육사상이 현대 교육에 주는 시사점을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 단순히 잡다한 지식을 모두 가르치는 것이 아니라, 지식·도덕·종교교육의 통합을 지향하였다. 그는 교육의 목적·내용·방법 등에 대해서 전체적이고 통합적인 견해를 제시하였다. 이는 현대와 같이 부분이나 단편적 기능을 중시하는 교육관이 갖는 문제를 극복하도록 하는데 중요한 지침이 될 수 있다. 범교육의 이상은 일반교육(Allgemeine Bildung)과 전인교육의 이념이 되고 있다. 둘째, 자연의 질서에 따르는 교육은 학습자의 발달과 능력에 따른 교수 방법으로서, 인본주의 교육 방법의 출발점이 되도록 하였다. 학생의 본성을 이해하고 그들의 발달 단계에 적절한 교육 방법을 택하여 보다 신속하게, 즐겁게, 철저하게 교육하는 방법은 오늘날에도 여전히 중?천퓸杵? 할 인본주의 교육의 중요한 과제로 남아 있다. 셋째, 빈부·성별·지위·장애에 관계없이 누구나 교육을 받도록 해야 함은 현대에 이르기까지 충분히 해결하지 못하고 있는 소외 계층에 대한 교육에 새로운 관심과 배려가 필요함을 일깨우고 있다. 넷째, 교육은 출생 전 단계의 태교로부터 시작하여 청소년기를 거쳐 청장년기와 노년기에 이르기까지 평생에 걸쳐 이루어져야 한다는 평생교육의 중요성을 제시하였다.|Johann Amos Comenius(1592-1670), an educational philosopher and the pioneering educational reformer of modern education in the 17th century, left a great work called 『Pampaedia』, which was discovered as late as in the 20th century. This paper set out to examine his educational thoughts in the book and draw their implications on modern education. The methodology adopted was documentary study that focused on 『Pampaedia』, the representative work of Comenius, with reference of 『Didactica Magna』 and 『Analytic Pedagogy』along with many researchers' books and papers on his educational thoughts home and abroad. The scope of the study included the background of his philosophy, theology and scientific ideas on which Comenius' thoughts were based, the composition and content of 『Pampaedia』, and the investigation of his view of man, educational purposes, contents, and methods, and the doctrines of 『Pampaedia』. These activities were followed by suggesting their implications on modern education. Comenius believed that man was the most important creation that God made and that the highest condition a man could reach was knowledge, self control and orientation to God, i.e, the state of reason, virtue and piety. A man in the state was regarded as the educational image of man by Comenius. His goal in education was to let all humans learn about all the things in the world and cultivate in virtue and faith so that they could be prepared for everything required to live both in this world and the afterworld. Thus the areas he focused on in education were knowledge, moral and faith, the coordination and harmony of which was the precondition of Pampaedia. He chose to follow the order of nature in education, emphasizing the analytic, integrating, and mixed methods among all. In the doctrines of 『Pampaedia』, Comenius suggested the eight stages of human developments understanding that human life began in the womb and continued through the afterworld. He used the term of school to describe the place where education was provided in each stage and provided a detail explanation of the contents and methods needed in each school. There is everything included in the Pampaedia thoughts of Comenius. He said that education should be available to all humans regardless of wealth, gender and social status, that they should learn all the things existing in the nature to cultivate knowledge, virtue, and faith, and that all the methods and techniques that could be a help should be used. In a word, he suggested that all humans should be taught all the contents in all the possible ways. The implications of his Pampaedia thoughts were summarized as follows: First, what he suggested was not a delivery of all the miscellaneous things but the integration of knowledge, moral and faith in education. He also provided comprehensive and integrated views on the purposes, contents and methods of education. In today's education where the emphasis is on some parts and fragmentary functions, this kind view of education should be a great guide in overcoming the related problems. The ideal found in 『Pampaedia』has been the mother of Allgemeine Bildung and the education for the whole person. Third, education for everyone regardless of wealth, gender, social status and physical disability he suggested stirs up new interest in and concern for the education for the isolated class, which has a long history of lacking solutions to this day. Fourth, the importance of lifelong education is implied in his belief that education starts at prenatal training and continues through adolescence, adulthood and senescence.
