바인(Carl Vine, 1954-)은 현재 활발하게 활동하고 있는 피아니스트이자 현대음악 작곡가이다. 1954년 10월 8일 오스트레일리아 퍼스(Perth)에서 태어난 그는 웨스턴 오스트레일리아 대학교(Western Australia University)에서 작곡을 공부하였고, 2008년부터는 시드니 뮤직 콘서바토리(Sydney Conservatorium of Music)의 교수로 재직 중이다. 바인의 생애는 연주 및 창작 활동을 기준으로 하여 3기로 구분할 수 있으며, 주요 창작 장르는 전자음악,춤음악,실내악곡,관현악곡,피아노곡의 다섯 가지로 나눌 수 있다. 이 가운데 바인의 피아노곡은 오늘날 피아노 리사이틀의 현대음악 레퍼토리로 자주 연주되며, 그 중 《피아노 소나타 제1번》이 대표적이다. 그는 총 네 개의 피아노 소나타를 작곡했는데, 그 중 세 개의 소나타만 출판된 상태이다. 《피아노 소나타 제1번》,《피아노 소나타 제2번》,《피아노 소나타 제3번》은 현대적 요소, 전통적 요소, 그리고 비르투오소적 요소 등 다양한 음악 양식과 미학적 특징을 보여준다. 그의 작품에는 복화음, 불협화음, 톤 클러스터, 교차리듬 및 템포 모듈레이션 등의 사용으로 현대 음악적 특징들이 곡의 전면에 부각되어 있지만, 동시에 ‘소나타’라는 장르의 전통을 계승하고, 소나타 악장 형식을 암시하거나 화성적 중심음을 사용하여 조성을 환기한다. 더 나아가 바인은 각 악장에서 공통된 모티브 및 주제를 사용하는 ‘발전하는 변주’(developing variation) 기법이 활용되고 있는데, 이러한 특징들은 바인의 피아노 작품에서 전통과 소통하는 모습을 보여주는 요소들이다. 또한 화려하고 고난도의 연주 테크닉을 요구하는 그의 피아노곡들은 현대 피아노 작품의 비르투오소성을 구현해내었다고 볼 수 있다. |ABSTRACT

Pianist and composer Carl Vine was born in Perth, Australia on October 8th, 1954. He studied composition at Western Australia University and has been teaching composition at Sydney Conservatorium of Music since 2008. Vine's life as a pianist and composer can be divided into three periods, during which he mainly composed electronic, dance, chamber, orchestral, and piano music. His piano works, especially Piano Sonata No.1, are frequently included in piano recital programs. Among the four piano sonatas written by Vine, only the first three are published. In each of the published sonatas, Vine combines different musical styles and aesthetics, such as modern, traditional, and virtuosic elements, into one work. Vine clearly displays the aspects of contemporary music such as the use of polychord, dissonance, tone cluster, cross-rhythm, and tempo modulation; at the same time, he preserves the tradition of the genre by implying its movement structure or establishing a tonal center. The use of the developing variation technique, in which every movement shares a common motive or theme, is another aspect showing how Vine interacts with musical tradition in his piano works. Furthermore, his piano works require the performer to execute extravagant high-level virtuosic techniques typical of modern piano music.
