층(layer)을 통한 과정의 회화 연구

Abstract

This thesis focuses on the <Layers of Time, 2019> exhibition among my works from 2018 to 2020, and the 'Painting of Process', in which time accumulates by stacking repetitive layers, and the side of the canvas I would like to focus on two themes of 'non-traditional painting', which focuses on the back side of the painting.

In my past flat painting work, I came to think about the fact that the medium of painting takes the form of a plane as a result, but the process is a combination of numerous layers. With this thought in mind, I proceeded with this study, starting with a work similar to printmaking, in which countless layers of acrylic paint are applied and then scraped off again as a work that reveals the process rather than the result-oriented finished work.

Also, I tried to break away from the long-standing traditional method of painting, which was mainly shown in the front, and I tried to dissect the numerous layers of paint painted on flat paintings such as canvas or panels. In order to emphasize this theme, the front part of the work was used in the work process. We excluded them, and focused on areas that we had not paid attention to, such as the side and back. It is installed on the floor or pedestal rather than in the form of a tableau painting hanging on the wall, so that the flat layers, which were mainly focused on frontal appreciation, can be faced from various angles in the form of three-dimensional objects in a three-dimensional space.

Through this thesis, I would like to examine what kind of attempts were made in relation to layers in contemporary art, compare and analyze with my works, and find out the meaning of time through the rearrangement of layers. In addition, through the expansion of pictorial expression, I intend to analyze the compositional method of painting.

Various attempts for the expansion of pictorial expression and many types of them have been steadily progressing and emerging. I would like to start with the structure and meaning of the canvas to start worrying about the perspective of looking at painting, and to show an expansive expression of time by rearranging layers.|본 논문은 2018년부터 2020년까지의 나의 작품들 중 <시간의 층위, 2019> 전시 작품을 중심으로 서술하며, 반복적 층(layer)을 쌓아 시간이 축적되는 ‘과정의 회화’를 중심으로 다룬 것이다. 나는 과거 평면 회화 작업 중, 회화라는 매체가 결과적으로는 평면의 형식을 띄지만 그 과정은 수많은 층의 결합물이라는 것에 대해 생각하게 되었다. 이러한 생각을 시작으로 나는 결과 중심적 완성작보다 과정이 드러나는 작업으로 무수한 아크릴 물감 층을 덧칠하고 표면을 다시 조각도로 깎아내는 소거(消去)작업을 시작으로 본 연구를 진행하였다. 또한 정면 위주로 보여져 왔던 회화의 오랜 전통 방식에서 벗어나고자, 나는 캔버스 혹은 판넬 등의 평면회화 작품 위에 칠해지는 수많은 물감의 층들을 해부하고자 했으며, 이러한 주제를 강조하기 위하여 작품의 정면 부분은 작업 과정에서 배제하였고 옆면과 뒷면 등 그동안 크게 주목하지 않았던 부분을 중점적으로 다루었다. 이를 벽에 거는 타블로(tableau) 회화의 형식이 아닌 바닥, 혹은 좌대 위에 설치하기도 하여 정면 감상 위주의 평면적이었던 레이어 층들은 3차원적 공간 속에서 입체물의 형태로 다각도에서 마주할 수 있었다. 본 논문을 통하여 현대미술에 있어 레이어와 관련하여 어떠한 시도들이 있었는지 살펴보며 나의 작업들과 비교, 분석하고 레이어의 재배치를 통한 시간의 의미를 알아보았다. 또한 회화적 표현의 확장을 통해 회화의 구성 방식에 대해 분석하였다. 회화적 표현의 확장을 위한 다양한 시도와 그에 따른 많은 유형들은 지금까지도 꾸준히 진행되고 생겨나고 있다. 나는 회화를 바라보는 시각에 대한 고민을 캔버스의 구조와 의미에서 출발하고 레이어의 재배치를 통해 시간의 확장적 표현을 보여 주고자 하였다.
