Abstract
Makeup is no longer an adult thing among high school girls, and they believe it is a way to express themselves. In general, girls going through puberty are interested in their appearance more than others. The factors that affect their consumption pattern include the bandwagon effect, new trends, and other psychological reasons.
In addition, more and more high school girls have started wearing makeup which led ‘makeup’ to blend into teenage culture naturally. The development of mass media and the digital industry allowed them to access cosmetics content easier, which could negatively impact teenage girls. Nonetheless, there has been a lack of studies analyzing the cosmetics consumption behaviors of high school girls and education related to makeup and beauty.
In this study, we have investigated female high school students who might significantly influence the cosmetic market to figure out the following aspects: their usage pattern of cosmetics, consumer behaviors, awareness of education related to makeup and beauty. The results of this study will contribute to the fundamental data that helps cosmetics brands and schools to understand the makeup cultures among high school girls and design curriculum for beauty courses.
The study targeted female students in high school between the 1st and the 3rd grade living in all different regions in South Korea, investigating the usage patterns of cosmetics and consumer behaviors. The questionnaire was distributed via Google Forms, and the research was conducted from September 1st to October 18th in 2021. The number of the survey responses used for analysis data was 507 out of 520, exclusive of unreliable answers, analyzed by SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) WIN 25.0. The general characteristics of the respondents were found by calculating the frequency and the percentage. Chi-squared test and frequency analysis, t-test, one way ANOVA were used in the study to determine the following aspects: usage patterns of cosmetics, purchasing cosmetics, channels of acquiring information, awareness of education related to makeup and beauty among teenage girls.
